FBI rolling out digital billboards in 20 cities
Employing public signage in the pursuit of suspects is probably about as old as criminology itself, so it's no surprise to see the FBI leveraging the latest technology to erect some of the largest, most versatile wanted posters in history. Thanks to a partnership with advertising giant Clear Channel Outdoor, the G-men will deploy some 150 digital billboards -- capable of displaying fugitives, missing children, or public safety info in real-time -- to 20 major cities around the country, following a successful trial launched in Philadelphia in September. So if you're planning on committing a felony in Des Moines, Iowa or Akron, Ohio soon, better get it done quick, lest your ugly mug become the talk of the car pool during your morning commute. List of all the lucky cities after the break.

Dude...i think that guy stole my bike.
Why didn't they use a mugshot of the pedophile Mormon guy who was on the FBI most wanted list instead? why it had to be a brother.
I live in Akron.. And these have been out for quite some time. Perhaps a year or so?
Anyway, for those of you thinking these are LCD or LED billboards.. They aren't. It's just a white sheet with an amazingly high resolution projector doing it's job onto the white sheet.
John, I hate to call you out, but you're wrong
from:

"That’s because the boards contain 449,280 light emitting diodes."
and think about how much it would really cost to work the system you proposed. let alone the reality of how far back the projector would have to be placed to cover a 14'H x 48'W space...
as noted in my previous comment, i live in akron as well.
Wow, my mistake.. Every time I look at the billboard I thought it was a projector because there is something sticking out on a stick.. Maybe it's just a light from when it used to not be LCD? I was wondering why the colors were slightly distorted from an angle. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :)
FBI isnt stealing ideas from Idiocrisy is it? not that ive seen that movie.
Where is the "Wanted Dead or Alive" text? Is there less of a reward if hes brought in with handcuffs up his arse?
Actually it doesn't have the text because it blares that song (by Bon Jovi) 24/7 to passing motorists interspersed with clips of Deadliest Catch.
I notice that Detroit isn't on here... I guess they wouldn't be able to afford enough of them for proper coverage here.
Nice Stash
police state.
Not until they install the retina scanning bluetooth packet sniffing cameras that shown your own face on the billboard as you drive by. Then you notice that there seem to be a lot more of those "billboards" in your neighborhood lately, but not so much in others, and they are all pointed in the direction of your house...and they keep showing pictures of you doing your yardwork, or checking your mail. But hey just call me paranoid ;)
These things are great, it's a two for one deal in many states: you can find the person you're looking for and fine the person calling them in for using their cell phone while driving.
Keep laughing as we get deeper and deeper into the totalitarian fascist police state. They're going through considerable effort here, money, time, etc. It's not a joke to those who rule you: National ID Cards, Digital billboards that display the ACCUSED criminals of society as entertainment and conditioning, rendition flights, a DEBATE(?!) about what is or isn't torture while people are experiencing the debatable treatment daily, the loss of the right to question ones imprisonment, the controlling of corporate media ("The Central Intelligence Agency owns everyone of any significance in the major media." --William Colby, CIA Director 1973-1976), the public mockery and slandering of anyone who questions the leaders or the system, a private army at the disposal of the "decider". Farewell, Republic. Fascism is here.
Wow. Listen, when the black helicopters show up, I don't know you. A giant TV set next to the road is hardly any different than posting pictures in the post office, and is probably not going to be much more successful. QUICK! name the last billboard you read! See what I mean? Just take it back a notch man, you've already been tagged in the NSA mainframe for that comment so you might as well have fun with what time you have left. BTW didn't I just read somewhere that the REAL ID act just died? I think it was /.
Not there yet. We're always reassured. Nothing to be concerned about. Wait for more fake terror to give us reasons to implement more unconstitutional laws. "We should never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories" -W. Apologists and shills who seek to divert concern or care should be jailed, not dissenters.
To the shills and sheep out there: Can you guys use something other than the tired old "black helicopters", "conspiracy theory", and "tinfoil hat" routine? I don't know why it comforts you so much to say those things. I don't wear a tinfoil hat, and I've seen the Army's black helicopters, Apaches, Pave Lows, Chinooks, etc. those exist. And proposing conspiracy theories and then proving them wrong or right is called police work ( I know it's so rare to see nowadays ). I'm just not getting the idea behind that. Are these phrases used to lump together people who are concerned about our state of governance that is not relevant to anything that dissenting citizens are speaking about?
No friend, they're used to lump together kooks who think that the Government gives a damn what YOU personally are doing at any given moment. Now let me give you a moment of insight. The Army is not going to use a "Pave Low" (MH-53) or "Chinook" (CH-47) to do any kind of spying because they are HUGE and not exactly stealthy. They're also not going to use Apaches as those are gunships. So let me give you the proper names of the "black helicopters" they are probably using to watch you. There is the OH-58 Kiowa which is the military version of the Jet Ranger (think news choppers) except they're black. The other possibility is the OH-6 Cayuse/Little Bird, which is the Hughes 500 (think TC's helicopter on Magnum P.I.). Now if they're NSA choppers they're probably using A-Stars, or something exotic like that. I suggest an extra layer of construction paper over the windows tonight as those IR cameras are pretty strong. They're on to you. Run.
It's amazing. The words are right there. Plenty of time. No one reads. I didn't say anyone cared about ME, or that those helicopters were the infamous "black helicopters". I said they were helicopters, and often black. Quick turn on the Fox News to get more clever jokies.
It's ok I'm witty on my own. You are out of your mind, quick turn to Military Channel and come up with some more helicopter names.
Such wit I've never known.
I notice Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin aren't on there.
We don't have time for those things in Dallas. Too busy texting and not using turn signals.
well done government, scare the f**k out of your people!
The reason wanted signs fail is nobody looks like their mugshot. I had a mugshot once, I smiled and the cop told me I wasn't allowed to smile. They want you to look mean and angry. But seriously, when other than mugshots do you suppose the guy in the picture had that facial expression? I bet he could stand under it and I wouldn't know if it was him. Other than Tom DeLay I don't think anyone has ever looked normal in their mugshot, and that guy doesn't really ever look normal.
I wonder if they will come equipped with the latest in missile defense technology to protect against vandalism.
@ Jimmy Rivera.
camden was the most dangerous city in america 2004... but when everyone in the city kills each other its hard for you to stay at the top.
i live in philly and its a mess, but dont act like camden is like beverly hills
These billboards look very cool. They're highly visible by day, and NOT overwhelmingly bright at night. Very Bladerunner!
Re: Camden, bear in mind two things:
1) Camden is tiny compared to Philly, making it all the worse.
2) Camden's entire government was shut down and taken over by the State due to total ineptitude.
Oh yeah, one more thing for the one near the Ben Franklin Bridge:
"Notice to NJites. You are entering an area where turn-signal use is mandatory; stop signs mean 'stop'; most streets are TWO lane, even if not marked as so or seemingly too narrow to be; turns must be made from the corresponding lane, and you WILL have to parallel park while here. If you cannot perform these functions, please stay in NJ!"
well, i just saw this sign a few days ago coming over the Walt Whitman bridge. never noticed it before (i go over that bridge like twice a month). i guess philly has two of the telis then? god knows we need it.
yea ive seen 2, 1 by the linc on 95, and the one on the walt whitman coming back to PA
Actually, Las Vegas only has a few all-digital billboards. We have more of the rolling-blinds style, but even those have only been recently installed. Of the digital billboards I've seen, most are by the I-15 by the strip.
