Samsung's P720, F490 make their video debut

Samsung's new P720 and F490 handsets already made themselves known at a recent press event in the Ukraine but, given that we unfortunately couldn't make the trek there ourselves, we didn't exactly get that great a look at 'em. Now thanks to the folks at Mobile-Notes, however, we've got some better pics of each of the handsets, along with a video that shows them off from every angle (check it out after the break). In case you missed the original announcement, the P720 and F490 pack 3 and 5-megapixel cameras respectively, along with dual SIM card slots on the former and a 432 x 240 touchscreen on the former. Both will also be available in the first half of next year, with the F490 trickling out sometime in the first quarter for $600, and the P720 following in Q2 for $500.

what great music.
CKMBA @ Dec 30th 2007 3:06PM
I wonder if this uses the same 667Mhz cpu as the iPhone or the slower 400Mhz that most phones use.
Darak @ Dec 27th 2007 1:31PM
Now it may just be me, but "along with dual SIM card slots on the former and a 432 x 240 touchscreen on the former" doesn't sound quite right, especially since most of the video is of the F490 touchscreen.

Why did they put the pics up backwards? Confused the heck outta me at first. If they couldn't move the pictures around, they could've at least made the title match the pic! I mean, I was really liking the specs on that silver one, till I saw the vid and realized that I fell in love with the wrong phone.
Just so you know, the short one is the P720, and the tall, silver goodness is the F490

will all the phone of future look the same boaring ? a large lcd in a shiny metallic frame ?
this design is becoming so boaring ,i've started hate this design.
Zak @ Dec 27th 2007 2:00PM
For something to be boaring, I'm assuming boars would have to be involved somehow. Here you go: http://www.dictionary.com You're welcome. And all phones of the future will only look like that if they continue to shamelessly copy the iPhone. If you don't like it, I suggest you write to all the other phone makers and tell them to start innovating instead of copying Apple's design over and over again.
tamoghno @ Dec 27th 2007 2:16PM
sorry for misspelling .[please give us EDIT engadget]
but surely , i like my N81 more than iPhone. i love the design.only wished it had a 3.5 inch screen like iPhone.i also hate phone because all their phones looks almost same.
ethana2 @ Dec 27th 2007 2:33PM
I second the motion for post edits. Yes and Amen.
palehorse @ Dec 27th 2007 3:12PM
To each their own, I guess; but as far as I'm concerned, the "look" is the best aspect of the iPhone, and I am glad others are copying it!
The only reasons I refuse to buy an iPhone are:
1) the exclusivity deal with AT&T turns me off.
2) cost
3) the specs suck.
So, if someone comes along offering the same sexy form factor as the iPhone, but it has better specs and a lower price, I'll be all over it like white on rice!! :)
The iPhone is still damn sexy... it's just too bad everything else about it is teh suck!

@ Zak
The LG Prada Phone was actually released BEFORE the iPhone . . .thanks.

That shine seems like it would be annoying outside, or places that have lamps.
Drew @ Dec 27th 2007 2:14PM
I am just glad the F700 is coming to verizon. It's about time the network had a phone that wasn't the chocolate.
Is the F490 just the F700 without a keyboard?
uFoolz @ Dec 27th 2007 2:15PM
THE Donald Melanson is so THE stupid that he uses THE in front of Ukraine... what THE dumb assholeZ LOL
Josh L @ Dec 27th 2007 2:30PM
In English, the country was formerly usually referred to with the definite article, that is, the Ukraine (as in the Netherlands, the Gambia, the Bronx, the Sudan or the Congo), and sometimes still is. However, usage without the article is now more frequent,[citation needed] and has become established in journalism and diplomacy since the country's independence (for example, within the style guides of The Economist, The Guardian, and The Times). The use of the definite article is standard in German (die Ukraine), although this is generally required for all non-neuter place names.

You forgot the Iraq, like, such as.
T-Bone @ Dec 27th 2007 2:22PM
It is a lot easier to pick an unused string of numbers and letters than research a name and make sure it isn't already being used or was used for a past product.
L @ Dec 27th 2007 2:25PM
I'd dare to say that each *major* manufacturer with a massive portfolio of phones has a somewhat confusing naming system...
But in the end, does that matter? I'd say phone buyers fall into, well, 4 categories anyway:
1. Majority: just walk into a shop and point at the phone they like aesthetically. Don't need to know model names.
2. Major minority: those who make their buying decisions a little more based on specs tend to know about sites like GSMarena to look up names before buying.
3. The fanboys: know the naming scheme by heart anyway.
4. The Apple-Fanatics: would never even look at another manufacturers phone anyway, so they don't have to burden their brains with complicated model names.
And if this ever reaches the American shores, I'm sure the operator will come up with some wacky, pseudo-cool name anyway...

F490, yummy. Need a review on that as soon as possible. Not 100% sure about their UI. Too similiar to their MP3 player.
Victoid @ Dec 27th 2007 2:40PM
seems like they've got a lot of dusty surfaces in ukraine...
Brendan @ Dec 27th 2007 2:51PM
I'm not sure that there's anything special in either of these phones. The 720 looked like a brick with a foolish palm-like flappy cover and the 490 looked like an elongated iPhone - I have no experience with the Sammy interface - could be ok.
As for that cover... I do not like the flappy thing attached to the battery cover - I call that a bucket of suck.

Allow me to summarize these two new offerings from Samsung...
For the shiny phone design lovers:
Th3s3 f0nes are teh h0tness!
For the haters:
Th3s3 f0nes are teh suck!
Thank you.
Homeboy @ Dec 28th 2007 4:02AM
Hot phones, and I might even pick the F490 behemoth up if it as good as it looks. My only concern is that the devices are desperately begging for WiFi. That's the only things that's standing between them and mega success.
MXY @ Dec 28th 2007 6:21AM
I've seen this phone's ad on the tv screen at the bottom of our apartment lift for the past month now.. How come so long for a video??
