iPhone firmware 1.1.3 leaked?
Looks like there may have been a possible leak of the next version of Apple's iPhone firmware, 1.1.3. According to Gear Live, it can now handle SMS to multiple recipients, the springboard (home screen) supports reordered icons and pagination (as well as web bookmarks), and Google maps gets hybrid view and that nifty cell-based location system. If this is all Steve plans to announce iPhone-wise at Macworld next month, we think there will be more than a few disappointed iPhone users out there. Then again, home screen pagination would kind of imply an SDK to make use of all those slots, so maybe the real news is under the hood.

GearLive is down...
You'll have to use the super-slow Coral Cache versions

too bad the site it's down with all the traffic from digg here and all the intertubes....
My Location rules. I used it to find a RadioShack, CircuitCity, and CompUSA near my approximate location (which the dot is usually is right on). Google Maps not only showed me the closest stores to my location, but gave me the address and phone number of those stores. This is by far the best application I've ever used on my Dash! :) Too bad what I was looking for (SATA HDD Cables) was at none of these locations except CompUSA I believe and the CompUSA closest to me closed :(.
if I'm not mistaken apple already announced an sdk for February.
It better fix negative black. Asshole Apple corp. trying to sweep shitty displays under the rug.
You expect an firmware update to fix a hardware problem? Good luck with that. Why don't you just go to the nearest Apple store and return the phone since it has a 1 year warranty?
w00t! 1.1.2 is looking sooo 2007...
I'd be disappointed too if I paid that much for an iPhone and while so many smartphones and fashion phones have GPS, I have to settle with Google's cell-based location system that estimates my location within a three miles radius. . . buy hey, at least you can zoom in and out of pictures by spreading my fingers.
No, it doesn't have GPS, but it has other features that make it a good buy (like a great browser, easy-to-use UI, Visual Voicemail). Remember that there is not just one type of customer in the world, and people will buy the product that best suits their individual needs. Not everybody needs GPS.
TUAW had an article yesterday (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/28/british-iphone-users-love-their-data/) about UK iPhone users, and the statistics suggest most iPhone users are not people who need GPS, but rather ordinary people who have never used a smartphone before. GPS would be nice, but for the type of customers who seem to be buying the phone, it's not a killer feature.
How many times do you want to triangulate your position from your mom's basement? Honestly, I don't see what you would need GPS for.
@ KarlW
Apple fanboys get defensive and make ad hominem attacks, but let's just look at the facts. The reason people buy the iPhone is because it is a hyped up fashion phone (i.e., it looks cool), maybe for the built in iPod, but not because of its great phone features. This is true, because there are far too many phones out there that leave the iPhone in the dust in terms of features (AT&T Tilt, RIM Blackberry Curve, Nokia N95/N95 8GB, LG Voyager, etc.), so if someone was looking for a phone with lots of features they would choose something else. You know what, it is okay to buy a phone as a fashion phone, as long as you admit it. For example, how many people bought the RAZR because it looked cool and it was thin? Many admitted that the a free Nokia phone performed better.
You are right, not everybody needs GPS, just like not everybody needs leather seats in an expensive luxury car. But if my car is an expensive luxury car and its competitors offer leather standard, I would be upset if it didn't have it. I guess not everybody needs a long lasting battery that they can replace, 3G speeds, a decent camera (low resolution, no autofocus, no flash), flash compatibility, headphone jack that is compatible with all headphones, quick email alerts, the ability to open various document formats, voice dailing, stereo bluetooth, or the ablity to use 3rd party application either. How many absent features does it take for the phone to not be a "great buy." It doesn't even have good call quality, which should be any phone's greatest priority.
Yes, the browser is okay, I wouldn't call it great. But then again it doesn't even support flash. Pretty pathetic for an Internet phone, which will run on Edge most of the time in public. What is more, typing the URL with the touchscreen QWERTY keyboard is unnecessarily challenging. True, the UI is easy to use, but there are many phones before the iPhone, such as the LG Prada, and phones after the iPhone, such as the N95 and the Voyager that are also easy to use. So this in itself is insufficient to make it a great phone. Once again, visual voicemail is "neat," but not enough to overcome the phone's other shortcoming.
So why do people buy the iPhone??? Well, you are right, there is more than one type of consumer. My original post, if anything, supports such a premise. There are those who want a true smartphone (e.g., lawyers at law firms). For these people, the iPhone is a joke. Anyone using an iPhone for such work related purposes can't be taken seriously. The phone, instead, will sell mainly to "fashionistas," and Apple fanboys. . . at a significant discount over its original release price, Apple may barely reach its 10 million sale target.
@ Nicolas Kim
Reasonable people can debate to different conclusions. There are many people that agree with me and many people that don't. Nevertheless, ad hominem attacks are sign of weakness. Instead of a relevant reply to the content of my legitimate comment, like KarlW did, you attack one's character. Very immature. The fact that a weak "smartphone" without GPS is insufficient for my life should be an obvious clue that I don't live in a basement. What is more, the fact that you would be happy with the iPhone tells me a lot about your life and your career.
"Apple fanboys get defensive and make ad hominem attacks"
And dick-faced Apple haterz like you have to come to--I swear to friggin' god--every single Apple related post and interject your "Well the [insert Apple product here] sucks because it can't do this and that".
I mean really, you are not an iota better than the fanboys you criticize. Get over the fact that the iPhone is more popular and gets more attention than your precious (RIM, Nokia, whatever the fuck you use).
@Shmapple
First... the Google cell-based location system can work in areas where GPS cannot. For instance, where I work... I have plenty of sky visible from my office, but not a single GPS device can pick up for some reason (we've tried several... it's one of the things we do). However, the Google cell location service finds me pretty well.
And I don't see your point about quick email alerts. I often hear the "ding" of an incoming email seconds before it shows up in Outlook connected to an Exchange server at work. Much faster than any other phone I've ever used to get email.
Second... I get the hint that Nicholas Kim was probably making a general thing called a "joke". Probably not aimed right at you, but maybe it should have been since you are taking it so personally.
It's funny that you mention "ad hominem" remarks, when you say things like "Apple fanboys" and "fashionistas". Why are you so defensive about the iPhone?
If you don't like it, fine, don't buy one... I like mine just fine, and it has plenty of features that I want and need. I had a Windows Mobile smartphone right before getting an iPhone, and guess what... it didn't have the 8 GB of storage that I wanted, or a maps program, or a decent web browser (although I put Opera on it and that helped), or easy typing, or a cheap data plan, or the ability to buy music from iTunes straight from the phone, or Youtube, or weather, and it didn't have GPS either (although I bought a BT GPS sensor that came with maps, at a cost of around $100 if memory serves).
So, get over it... buy from LG or Nokia or any of the many other cell phone companies you tout as being so great.
Shmapple, I'll take Google's *FREE* My Location over some slow as hell "2 minute to lock on to a satellite" GPS that you have to pay an additional monthly fee for. Verizon, I'm looking at you!
And the fact that you thing an LG Voyager compares to a iPhone makes your opinion that much less valuable. I've read the reviews on the Voyager and it's all flash no substance. Feature lists don't make a device fun and easy to use.
@ Scott
Yes, getting a GPS unit to lock onto satellite can get annoying if you are in, for example, San Francisco. You also make a good point that Google's service is FREE, can't complain about that. From reading the following Engadget blog, however, it seems that many people are having trouble getting it to work or work well (http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/29/google-unveils-gps-less-handset-locator-technology/). In addition, its lack of accuracy really limits is usefulness. Of course, you don't have to take my word for it, that was the majority opinion in the Engadget blog.
I am not sure what reviews you have read saying that the LG Voyager is all flash and no substance. In fact, for example, it won CNET's Editor's Choice award and a head-to-head comparison with the iPhone.
@ rawhead
I apologize, I didn't know your sense of worth was so closely tied with Apple's brand image. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I thought a tech blog was an appropriate place for a marketplace of ideas regarding various subjects. And for every 20 Apple fanboys there are that say [product x] sucks because it doesn't LOOK like an iPod or an iPhone, I think someone that doesn't kiss Steve Jobs ass provides some much needed balance. Obviously, Apple fanboys don't care to read our opinions and will think we are "dick faced" (wow, so much hostility and very immature! :p), but no one is putting a gun to your head or holding an Apple product for hostage to read them. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. As for popularity, as I hinted to above, in my profession the iPhone is actually the least used phone and trust me when I say I can afford one if I wanted one, so my opinions have nothing to do with envy. But thank you for adding nothing to this conversation other than another ad hominem attack.
@ bondsbw
You make reasonable points. As I mentioned above, it is entirely possible for one to be satisfied with their iPhone even with its lack of features and shortcomings, even though many aren't. I think if I were to get a touch screen phone, I may wait and see what phones utilizing Nokia's S60 technology have to offer. As for ad hominem attacks, whether you enjoy my replies or not, they are factually (for example, no GPS on iPhone is a fact) and I do not attack the character of the person I am replying to. I do not call people Apple fanboys or fashionistas without adding any content to my reply. Instead, I generally explained that there are different types of consumers and Apple fanboys and fashionistas, terms I didn't come up, are two types. Not only does this not amount to an ad hominem attack, but from a marketing aspect, it is true. Do you disagree that Apple fanboys and fashionistas are two types of people that buy the iPhone?
@ bondsbw
The iPhone doesn't have push email which is a system that provide an "always-on" capability, in which new email is instantly and actively transferred (pushed) as it arrives by the mail delivery agent (MDA) (commonly called mail server) to the mail user agent (MUA), also called the e-mail client.
@Shmapple
I think that a low ranking is a sign of weakness.
All I can say is, wow.
Seriously shmapple, do you sit on here all day?
That is the first sign of a troll.
Second, you take the time to respond to EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO RESPONDED TO YOU!
Second sign of a troll.
Finally, you take an extremely one-sided view of the situation, using the iPhone's weaknesses as a defense against your precious voyager.
Does your voyager have a touchscreen, accelerometer, and a sensor that turns off the touchscreen when it comes close to your head? I think not.
This furthers my theory on why people are all of a sudden finding it cool to dis the iPhone.
Yes there are a few downsides, there are always downsides to every phone. Get over it.
Personally, i think people are complaining without doing the research. Did it ever occur to you that the reason Steve chose to not use 3G technology was because of power issues? I can understand that, as I have a 3G sprint phone, and after using the high speed connection for a little while the battery drains super quickly.
Lets see what other complaints you have. Ah yes, the issue of GPS. Power constraints and slow lock on speeds are the number one reasons that i can think of.
Finally, if you look back at your own extraordinarily long comment above, (yes i'm trying to beat that can you tell?) half of those complaints can be fixed (and probably will be fixed) with a simple FIRMWARE/ SOFTWARE UPGRADE. Seriously. That's like saying, well why didn't this company expect their product to be dunked underwater, lit on fire and shot with a shotgun and work perfectly? They couldn't have possibly known all of what the users wanted.
I hope this clears up some of the hatership that has been going on here.
Peace out.
Also, before you correct me, i meant a touchscreen that isn't covered with a flimsy plastic that seems to squish with your touch and is able to be easily broken.
@ Nicholas Kim
We are two different people. (1) You put great value to your thread ranking, while I pay no attention to it. Those voting in this thread in particular are disproportionately Apple fanboys, which of course are going to skew the thread rankings. Instead of ranking threads due to content, those who say anything good about Apple get a +, while those who say something negative get a -. I've accomplished enough in my life to have my self esteem tied to how highly ranked my posts are. (2) You have nothing productive to say, while I do. (3) You are biased while I am not. I do my research and buy the best products, I don't care about brand name. If iPhone fixed its shortcomings, I'd consider purchasing it. You, on the other hand, have a sycophantic devotion to the creators and principles behind Apple products. Let me guess, you own an Apple iPhone (it is possible to defend it while not owning it), but that isn't the only Apple product you own, is it? You probably also use iTunes, own an iPod and a MacBook and probably think Apple's OS (Leopard, etc.) is much better than Windows XP (we all now Vista sucks). Am I right? You are enthralled and have a very emotional attachment to Apple products, which is why you take my critical remarks as a personal attack. As a result, you reply to my posts, but fall back on emotional responses when challenged on facts instead of adding anything productive.
@ Mike10010100
Well, other than calling me a troll (people just can't resist ad hominem attacks) at least you replied with some content.
"Seriously shmapple, do you sit on here all day?"
No, I get email alerts, which are sent directly to my push email phone.
"That is the first sign of a troll."
Perhaps, or a sign of somebody that responds to his replies.
"Second, you take the time to respond to EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO RESPONDED TO YOU!"
It's called correspondence and common courtesy. If people take the time to reply to me, I take the time to reply to them. Do you not reply to people in your daily interactions?
"Finally, you take an extremely one-sided view of the situation, using the iPhone's weaknesses as a defense against your precious voyager."
In my post I gave a few reasons why the iPhone is good (for example, fashion phone with a nice voicemail feature) and bad (for example, poor call quality). That is more balanced than any of the other posts above that only mention what is good about it. So if my views are one-sided, what do you call the replies to my views? As for the LG Voyager, that received CNET's Editor's award and won CNET's prizefight against the iPhone. And many other reviewers agree. So my opinion about the phone is not even needed.
"Does your voyager have a touchscreen, accelerometer, and a sensor that turns off the touchscreen when it comes close to your head? I think not."
Actually, the Voyager does have a touchscreen. What is more, the iPhone's accelerometer and sensor that turns off the screen are merely means to an end and who says those are the best means? Not every phone needs to have an accelerometer and a sensor that turns off the screen to be a good phone. Technology has different ways of accomplishing the same thing. To me, the end is more important than the means. So if I can use the touchscreen without activating with my face while talking on the phone, I could careless how they do it as long as it works.
"This furthers my theory on why people are all of a sudden finding it cool to dis the iPhone."
Actually, before the iPhone was even released, people looked at the facts and gave critical reviews as a result. For example, 28 Reasons Why the iPhone Sucks posted in June 2007 (http://www.who-sucks.com/tech/15-reasons-why-apples-iphone-sucks), Top 5 reasons the iPhone Sucks posted January 2007 (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/top-five-reasons-why-the-iphone-sucks-228100.php), etc. Get on Google and you can find literally hundreds of thousands dated around the time the iPhone was first released. It doesn't take everybody months to let the hype die down and see the light.
"Yes there are a few downsides, there are always downsides to every phone."
You are absolutely right. Some shortcomings are far too basic. No mp3 ringtone on a music player? No copy/paste? Hmmm.
"Personally, i think people are complaining without doing the research. Did it ever occur to you that the reason Steve chose to not use 3G technology was because of power issues? I can understand that, as I have a 3G sprint phone, and after using the high speed connection for a little while the battery drains super quickly."
I love how you call Steve Jobs by his first name, very personal. Anyways, you are really bending over backwards to give Steve Jobs the benefit of the doubt. (1) The iPhone will have 3G in Europe. Does Apple all of a sudden not care about battery life in Europe? (2) Apple could have the phone come with 3G and through an option use Edge to save battery life. They could even have Edge as the default network if they are really that concerned. (3) While it does drain more batteries, it isn't so extreme as to cripple 3G use. Many smartphones have 3G and their users do use it. So yes, it occurred to me, because I think of both sides of the argument. Here, it just happens to be untrue.
"Lets see what other complaints you have. Ah yes, the issue of GPS. Power constraints and slow lock on speeds are the number one reasons that i can think of."
You list GPS technology's shortcomings as reasons Steve Jobs did not include it with the iPhone, yet Google Maps is even worse as it is merely a map. Not even comparable. So now, you can "upgrade" to Google's cell-based navigation system, once again, not a true substitute. Not to mention I have a Garmin Nuvi GPS and getting a lock is not bad at all, and certainly not bad enough to completely delete its usability. And the GPS technology is not only more than good enough for me, but good enough for the military (who invented it) and millions of people who use it in the cars, hand held units, and, of course, cellphones.
"Finally, if you look back at your own extraordinarily long comment above, (yes i'm trying to beat that can you tell?) half of those complaints can be fixed (and probably will be fixed) with a simple FIRMWARE/ SOFTWARE UPGRADE. Seriously. That's like saying, well why didn't this company expect their product to be dunked underwater, lit on fire and shot with a shotgun and work perfectly? They couldn't have possibly known all of what the users wanted."
Just because it CAN be fixed by firmware upgrades doesn't mean it WILL be fixed. How many of them were fixed with this leaked firmware upgrade? Mmmhm....very interesting. Not to mention things like no flash or autofocus on the camera, the battery, etc. cannot be fixed with firmware upgrades.
I apologize for the hasty response smapple; I agree that the iPhone, and any phone for that matter, is not perfect.
You can see that i wrote that response at 1:30 at night. Brain half dead. I think that you have some very good points. My whole point was not that YOU are wrong in your opinions, but that there seem to be a whole lot of people who just trash the iPhone and Apple for everything they do.
"Just because it CAN be fixed by firmware upgrades doesn't mean it WILL be fixed."
Wow, really? Because i know that when that sdk comes out in February, tons of people will make apps that solve many of the (small) problems that the iPhone has. Copy/Paste? Easily done, i've seen it happen with homebrew apps on other mediums.
Also, look at the firmware version number. 1.1.3!!!!
This isn't even a 1.2 or a 2.0. i mean come on! No other company makes huge huge upgrades to their product with any less than a 2nd decimal increase.
And by the way, the power consumption was not just speculation from me, but was directly from the mouth of Mr. Jobs (you happy?) himself. If you look back on the reports of Engadget, at a certain press conference during the Q&A portion, that was his answer to a person who asked "Why no 3G?"
Finally, you are comparing a Garmen to a phone? The Garmen is 1st and foremost a GPS device. it doesn't have to worry about being a phone. Secondly, the Garmen cannot update the maps (and business locations) by itself, whereas Google Maps can because it is constantly connected to the web.
Okay, and finally we come to the voyager's design. The first thing that i think of when i look at the voyager is that it must be a cheap Chinese knockoff of the iPhone. The design obviously comes from the iPhone, down to the bottom buttons. Also, if you read the comment below the first long comment, i meant a screen that wasn't made of flimsy plastic. Not to mention that that specific type of screen is impossible to use with anything that isn't a stylus. Also, the voyager doesn't even attempt to include an input correction software.
I await your other-worldly reply. (Dilbert reference)
Creepy, that address is just up the street from me :O
All i want for my next iPhone is 3G, GPS and have it a little faster. If i can get the cell location for free with this gen, i wont miss those other features for a while. :-)
Has anyone noticed the ability to create additional home screens??? I think that means alot more applications!
All i can say is apple should adopt the same policy with the applications after the SKD release as they do with podcasts......FREE!!!!!!!
Roll on macworld.
Yeah I noticed -- I actually read the article..
My opinion is that, since editing the home screen is so accessible to users, applications will be free. It would be a bad move by Apple anyway to make all applications only available at a premium.
@KarlW
Since when has that stopped Apple when there is a quick buck to be made (see ringtones).
One thing is for sure: if/when Apple asks for money for an iPhone application, it will not only be worth (or perceived to be worth)every cent paid, but in addition the whole iPhone world and their pet rabbit (including jailbreakers)will rush/surf to the nearest available outlet to purchase and download it.
, the love/hate affair continues...
If you look at all the pictures, you'll see that the additional home screen buttons are (currently) from bookmarked webpages. I would guess that this is *also* an enabler for when SDK-based apps are released, but I wouldn't expect any new apps to be released with 1.3
@Wolfticket I make my ringtones for free with Garageband.
The accusation that Apple tried to milk ringtones is silly when you look at their original ringtone offering compared to that available on other phones and other carriers (more expensive, sometimes time-limited). And now they've gone one step better and given us a tool that let's a ringtone be created from any audio file.
What about delivery reports for sms?
these look real fake to me, why?? wheres the picture of the unit displaying 1.1.3 firmware. am pretty sure the new firmware will included new features but i dough cell triangulation will be one of them. looks like a jailbroken iphone running new apps to me, but time will tell
I have to agree. I as much as I love the iPhone, I don't think steve would be so quick to point out one of it's few weak points (lack of a GPS radio) in the form of a firmware update, even if it does add functionality.
I won't be disappointed by update. I have had an iPhone since day 1 and I love it now as much as I did then. If these things are true, then I think it's a good update package.
There will always be people pissed that that a device doesn't have X or Y feature. Unless Apple decides to go the direction of "we are going to implement every feature that has even been or ever will be in a cell phone", people won't be fully satisfied. It's really quite sad.
It's the cost per feature syndrome. I've always had that attitude. Whenever I bought electronic devices I would always check to see how many features I was getting. Yet, usually after I purchased the device, I'd seldom use all those features. I always figured eventually I'd use them, but never did.
So just because a device is missing a feature or two it doesn't necessarily make it less useful to you if it's missing features you don't ever use.
This will continue to be a nagging "problem" for the iPhone with people having this perceived notion it should be fully loaded with every hardware feature available. Since the iPhone is slim, already heavy due to the large glass screen and doesn't have a replaceable battery, at this point in time it can't be stuffed with hardware without sacrificing talk time, weight or size.
So it won't be suitable for everyone, but probably pleases 90% of those that use it with the features it has. Software features are missing, but I'm guessing that's just a lack of programming time. I do feel bad for iPhone users if minor firmware updates really just a sales trick to add only a few features at a time to continually boost sales. That would seem rather a foolish move to me if it that rumor were true.
If the google locate me feature is added, its gna piss of alot of people. Remember google hasnt actually finished off making it work in europe or asia yet.
Sounds like a good update. Not been able to load up the page yet.
The things I would love to see implemented on the iPhone are:
1. Move the send button when writing texts - it is too close to the "keyboard" and I've already sent incomplete texts a few times by hitting it by mistake.
2. Bluetooth should allow data connections - would be great for traffic updates for TomTom satnavs. Also, should allow external devices to read and send SMS.
3. MMS - I mean come on. Why was this left out? It would be so easy to implement.
4. A setting to bring to the the front page of each application instead of starting where you left off each time.
5. Fix the alarm bug I experienced where I had a calendar reminder was set just before and alarm was due to go off. As a result, the phone sat there waiting for me to aknowledge the reminder and didn't sound the alarm until I did so. Luck for me I only slept in by 30mins and wasn't late for work!!! (I this a known bug?)
6. Flash in Safari - please? Would be great.
For point #2, I suspect that its AT&T and the other carriers who dont want that to happen. Remember, the iPhone has "unlimited" data and the carriers dont want you to be able to use that data from devices like laptops, PDAs and GPS devices.
For point #6, its most likely the fact that if Apple added Flash to the iPhone, Apple would have to play license fees to Adobe.
I can tether my AT&T BlackBerry to my laptop and use it as a modem, sanctioned by the carrier. If the carriers thought it was that big of a deal, they wouldn't offer the service.
Adobe wouldn't charge Apple anything to include the flash player plugin on the iPhone. They don't charge Nokia anything to include Flash Lite on their phones, nor do they charge Apple to include the Flash Player on Macs or PCs. Flash is an enabler for Adobe... The more Flash clients out there, the more tools and services they sell to developers. The only reason Apple would have to pay Adobe anything is if Apple wanted to write their own Flash plugin, which Adobe surely would never allow.
@Salsa Shark
But no doubt you are paying a hefty per-month premium to do so. That is the ONLY reason that Ma Bell would let you do that.
As for #6
There's really nothing to do with plugin fees, but to application control. Flash would enable appls that would be more like native than web, which freaks Stevie out (his therapist should explain why's that very well...)
yay! this means that 1.1.2 can be unlocked soon :)
I also can't multiply large numbers (billion) by anything under 1. The calculator won't insert a period when using large numbers for some reason.
Yes, the calculator on the iPhone is a bit of a disgrace. I don't see why they couldn't include a basic scientific calculator (along the lines of what OS X comes with for free).
Also, I find the price graph on the stocks page not much more than interesting eye-candy; some additional financial info (e.g., P/E ratios, some quick-and-dirty big picture numbers such as revenues, net income and other basic financials) would be far more useful for most people. (Apple: Why not look at the type of info that finance.google.com provides on the main stock page?)
I wish the calculator had four option at the bottom like Clock does. Basic calculator, scientific calculator, TIP calculator and Conversion calculator.
to be honest...all I care about in the new firmware...to include a new baseband uprgade!
Point 6# Flash in Safari
Apple would lose money as you would then be able to watch Full episodes of tv on the network's (ABC,NBC,CBS) website. All major networks offer a large selection of shows free in Flash on their site. This would cut into Apple's download profits from iTunes. Sorry, no flash anytime soon.
I think it's simpler than that. There is no Flash that will work well enough on an ARM processor on OS X. Flash for other mobile phones is pretty bad and is a major battery drain and Flash for Mac OS X needs to be optimized too. Until Adobe can get on the ball there is no reason for Apple to even consider it. But if there were such a Flash package ready for the iPod Touch/iPhone platform I don't think Apple would use it for the reasons you mentioned above. :-)
Well the main reason we want flash is not for watching shows as bittorrent+transcoding is already perfect for that but the problem is there are many sites that use a flash interface and you can use those without it...
@Ayle
So wouldn't "those sites" be the real problem? I'm all for flash on the iPhone, but web sites that don't offer a non-flash version as an option are broken by design. Some people don't install flash because it brings a ton of annoying ads.
all they would have to do is add an iphone detector and it would disallow play of the full episodes from those websites. There's no reason it should all together be thrown out. People aren't even asking for flash for the reason of watching full show episodes.
Well if it doesn't come with a fix for the volume issues and MMS (no, i dont' want to use email to send images) then what freaking good is it? These issues have been discussed by iphone users since they came out.
Volume is infinitely more important than some hack kneed GPS system. I can't hear my phone ring when driving down the road!!!! Get on the ball Apple!
The only volume issues I have for the phone ring is that I choose to pick a softer tone. The upside is that it doesn't disturb as much if I forget to set it to vibrate in a meeting or church or other place.... the downside is that I can't hear it as well in the other room when playing loud music.
So, I'm not sure what the problem you are having is, but my iPhone sounds plenty loud when I play normal ringtones.
same her sounds fine to me on rings and while talking.
same her sounds fine to me on rings and while talking.
That image is a fake. The google locater has a smaller blue circle of where it thinks you are based on towers.
Until they get MS DirectPush on iPhone, it is dead to me...
Such a good looking device that has almost NO USE AT ALL to those of us that are in the vast class of "corporate users". But that in 1.1.3 and I will have one in 24 hours.
The iPhone is not a corporate device - go buy a Blackberry if you want intsant communication. The iPhone is a video and MP3 player, basic email device, and of course, a freaking phone. The email and basic internet have saved my roast many times, on account of the convenience of being anyhwere with wifi (in Canada, they charge out the arse for data so I don't subscribe to EDGE) and being able to check my email or look at one that's already come in!
Mark, the iPhone isn't a business phone and Microsoft doesn't provide support for non-Microsoft products. Go complain to Microsoft about not making their protocols more open so that people can write software to coexist with their systems without paying ridiculous fees. I don't complain to Mozilla because Thunderbird doesn't connect to Exchange (not natively anyway). That's Microsoft's doing!
Yeah....now if the iPhone allowed you to send Picture texts and copy and paste something from the web to an e-mail that would be great!!
It's going to be a revlutionary update.
Can't wait to get an iphone!
i think that those that want the iPhone experience but hate that ht has no true smartphone features should look no further than to HTC's latest offerings. The HTC Touch Cruise is touch screen based, full GPS, and has WM6 Pro on it (matches the Tilt in ROM/RAM) so it'll fit all your business oriented needs. The iPhone I think is for more of a casual user so they shouldn't be compared until maybe in Feb. with the release of SDKs they implement more true smartphone features into it. If speed is an issue then just wait until they release a 3G iPhone (later 2008?). I myself have been on the fence of getting either an iPhone or a Tilt but this Touch Cruise is sounding mighty nice too.
JK, I have to disagree with your assessment that the iPhone is for a "casual user." I've had a number of great smartphones, including the Sony Ericsson P800 and P910i, but I've never come close to the 75-100 MB of data I'm using each month with my iPhone. The browsing experience on the iPhone makes it ideal for heavy duty use; I manage shared To Do lists with Remember the Milk, read my RSS feeds with Newsgator, and Fandango has a great iPhone interface.
I miss exactly one application from my P910i -- a password manager that let me synchronize a secure password database with my desktop. But what I've gotten from the iPhone more than outweighs that inconvenience.
iPhones can't do multiple SMS?! You iPhoners have been living in the freaking stone age!
I want friggin' copy/paste! Why can't I use this thing like a PDA????????
Lurker here, I waited with anticipation for a new Iphone to replace (yes,I know it's ancient)Treo 600 with tmobile...soo disappointed with the AT&T only connection...cost, need more smartphone apps...all the comments above on both sides of the fence...my Treo keeps chugging along serving my needs...I am excited by the HTC Touch Cruise and my hopes for Tmobile 3G...I think the answer to all the gripes will be in 2008...hold out for the USA phones to catch up with Europe etc...Happy New Year y'all...
fuck that, give me god damn A2DP already.
Anyone know if/when the iPhone will sync to my Outlook calendar directly using the same mechanism it uses to sync my Outlook email (vs iTunes)?
I agree. I just Googled my name to find it - but annoying nonetheless!
Screw this triangulation thing. 99.9 percent of the time, unless I'm REALLY drunk, I KNOW where I am. Give me a damned eBook reader. Give me something practical. Apple has a LOT of catching up to do and they need to start NOW.
Let's see:
I own an iPhone and have never been a Mac user before, so, I think I can't be considered a Mac boy, it was even hard to me to start using Itunes (the sound is better than Windows Media)... Second, the only reason why I bought an iPhone is because the iPod+Mobilephone facility, I hate to carry with me "4 different gadgets" (watch + mp3 player + mobile phone + Palm or something else).
Why iPhone and not another mobile with MP3 player?, just because the iPhone includes the best ever inbuilt MP3 player of any other mobile phone not only because the interface (I'm not talking about the cover flow, which I consider useless), also because the quality of the sound (very important for me) and finally I bought an iPhone because if I want to have an iPod (I never had one before but I knew the quality of the sound and easy-use interface) like that I have to pay £199 for the ipod touch, so.. finally I made my numbers and I paid £199 for the iPod touch plus £70 for the phone, I don't know you guys, but for me that is value. Cheers.
