ARCwelder gives root / binary executable to Archos 605 and 705 players
Ah, how we do love a good root-hacking resulting in the ability to run homebrew code. And being that we also have a soft spot in our heart for Archos's 605 and 705 series players, ARCwelder ought to do our kind and yours quite nicely. If yours is running firmware 1.7.13, check it out, it should get you root access to the device's Linux shell, enabling you to do all kinds of fun things, like develop and run your own apps, or see how long it'll take to break the DRM on downloaded media. Did we say that?

wow,at last, about time its hacked, but does it play doom at its native resolution?
Bobs @ Jan 1st 2008 1:38AM
If doom could run on it, which it can on the 04s i think, it would run between SD and 720HD, and can be outputted to exact 720, theoretically that is

400mhz proc and 64mb of ram, this could be a great emulation machine
JohnTitor @ Dec 31st 2007 8:33PM
so does this mean homebrew development can finally begin?
I predict, among other things, there will be NES/Game Boy emulators, Doom interpretor, iPod interface look-alikes, and Ogg Vorbis support
fischju @ Dec 31st 2007 9:15PM
Not so much homebrew as either compiling apps for the linux OS already on it, or a custom distro/firmware

Wooo!!
What a fun little exploit, and here I was thinking we would have to wait until someone found those damnable private encryption keys!
Great job guys!

has anyone hacked the 604 yet? I have a 604 wifi and I thought that the source was released due to the version of linux that was built on for the OS being GPL- I haven't found any sites though for anyone developing on it

the o4, and AV500 have been hacked, check it out here, i think the 04 even has a NES emulator, and a GB/gba emulator

oops, it turns out, that the 04 has some bits of source code, but i couldnt find anone who has hacked it yet.

If you look at the archosfans topic you can see that this exploit applies (at least partially) to the 04 series as well. In fact it should work with any wifi equipped Archos player. But don't expect anyone to continue work on exploiting the discontinued players.

So you mean I shouldn't get my hopes high about getting a hacked/custom firmware for a non wi-fi 604?
SeCALPHA1 @ Jan 13th 2008 4:38AM
What about the 605 wifi; has there been anything on hacks for the newer archos models? I haven't heard of anything either.
