hey i am from Kirkland near by lynwood and was wounderig if you can help me go from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3
Nice, but what about mms messaging? I was convinced I would never need it, but ever since I got an iPhone, people just assume I can see them. I constantly get the "you have received an mms message..." text, then I have to send another text back saying I can't receive them, then I get one back saying something like "an iPhone, if anything, should be awesome at mms! WTF????"
I really don't get the logic behind not including it.
There's no logic, dude. Apple just hasn't done everything it could with the iPhone. No video, no copy and paste, no To Do list... hmm. But as usual they really nailed "sexy." It's a very cool phone. It just lacks features.
This is a long long time coming. Personally I never had use for it, but a lot of people do. Therefore Apple need to add the damn thing. Steve, remove thou head from ass and add MMS.
Few people will care about MMS moving forward. It's a horrible legacy product tied to a checkboard and strange and inconsistent fees and extra charges. If would be easier to e-mail someone a movie attachment via Email than over MMS. Saves you from getting choked to death when they find out that you gave them a charge of $10 for 20 seconds of bad video.
I am with you on that, Cleverboy. I would add SMS to that. Both are such arcane/old-world ways to communicate. The only reason they have survived is that data access has hitherto been so stingily doled out by the service providers, and people had 2 lk fr mre effnt wys 2 commncte.
With the increased availability of fairly-priced data (and the increasing prevalence of push email), it is a generational thing that will be gone soon.
Well everything seems nice in apple werld, but judging by your google maps pic in the main article, it isn't very hard to guesstimate an approximate location of where the picture was taken.
I'd say ur in the N170 St. and Aurora Avenue North, probably on Whittman Ave. Just a guestimate! Hope it all works out for you. All the best in luck and donations.......

Its really sad that the iphone was released without proper features. Sure, it has some WoW factor but not enough to make it practical. Long live iphone 2.0?

It's really neat to see the cell tower triangulation in use, that's for sure. From looking at the map, looks like he’s near the corner of N 185th St and Aurora Ave N in Shoreline, Washington. The neighborhood looks like it is a suburb midway between Seattle and Lynnwood along the I-5.
But I'm really confused; when did the iPhone come out for a network by the name NATE? (See the network ID at the top left corner of the iPhone in the video) Is there anyone in the neighborhood north of Seattle familiar with a network by that name? Because I’d be really interested to find out if they are a nationwide network that offers the iPhone.
I’m just sayin'...
The "cell network" was just him changing it to his name. It can be done with any unlocked iPhone, and will stay that way even through updates, is my understanding. This new firmware better hit soon because I would really enjoy having the ability to send multiple text messages, one of the major things missing when the phone was first launched.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know you were able to update to the new firmware (is it even out yet?) on an iPhone that was 'jailbroke.'
Now for me to wait patiently for a way to update to the 1.1.3 firmware on a sim unlocked iPhone and not brick it.
Google Maps "My Location" does not use triangulation. It only estimates one's location based on the currently associated cell and that cell's approximate range.
What about iPod Touch firmware?

I won't be upgrading -- I like the ability to do VNC on my iPhone with the jailbreak stuff more than I need a half-baked GPS solution. I already have GPS -- what we need are some REALLY cool features like REAL GPS integrated with Google maps. Plus super cool messaging and chat all integrated into ONE application. And let's not forget Copy and Paste, and a real honest-to-god To Do list for grown ups to use.

Nobody ever said the iPhone was perfect, but it is still a great phone. It needs more features yes, but being that it mainly a software based phone they can thankfully be added. Yes, it doesn't have "real" GPS yet, and yes it's not 3G, and it would be even better with 16GB or 32GB of storage. Like we said, it's not perfect.
Like or lump it though, the iPhone rocks!
The irony though, is that the iPhone 'rocks' as you say, in all respects except as that of an actual phone.
SMS, MMS, 3G, Bluetooth... all are standard on everything else in this bracket.

The iPhone is a great device, partially because its interface is streamlined in many cases. It works differently than a standard phone, in the sense that it has been designed with usability in mind, above providing every little possibly feature in an arcane submenu.
You might as well regard the iPod's lack of an FM reciever as comedy, but most people seem to have let go of that now as they're proven wrong time and time again.

Pretty Cool but a Jailbreak'd iphone can do all this stuff already, even the cell location!
So it's not worth for me upgrading if it comes out!
It won't do it anywhere as nicely as with google maps integration though. Navizon is trial-ware.

I felt the same way when I saw the iPhone didn't support AT&T's analog cell network.
Seriously guys what is all the fuss about. I have been doing everything in this video for almost two months now. What is all the excitement about????
The excitement is that I do not have to unlock or jailbreak my phone to do these features. Which also means that every time an update comes out I do not have to worry about if my jailbreak, or something will fail and my phone will brick. Besides the new software features, Apple introduces bug fixes that help stop crashes and other minor problems.

to each his own I guess. I spent less than 10 minutes jailbreaking my phone in October and have not had to update the firmware since. I have 3 pages of features on my phone that give me more functionality than you will have in a year from now and my phone doesn't crash either. In fact, I did the same for my wife's phone and guess what, it doesn't crash either.... So enjoy your upgrades in January or February because by then I will probably have video recording enabled by then so I can record the glee on your face when you get multiple recipient text messaging.....Keep drinkn' the kool-aid sparky :)
The excitement is obviously because these features are official from APPLE, not 3rd party hacks that could possibly brick your iPhone. Not to mention its showing we're just steps away from the official release of APPLE apps too.
So you can do all this and more with a jailbroken iPhone, yes, but this is the real deal Holyfield.

I'm sorry, I'm not entirely convinced that this isn't a sham. Looks to me like someone is just showing off features on a jailbroken iPhone. (The "Nate" is a dead give away)
I've heard conflicting reports that this is a legitimate update and that you can't downgrade the firmware once 1.1.3 is installed. If this is so, how did this person get the firmware AND jailbreak their phone.
...Either I missed something in that video, or the blogs are all making much ado about run of the mill rumors. (aka, business as usual) ;)
You don't have to jailbreak you phone to change the network name for what it's worth. I think it looks pretty promising that this is the actual update but I just can't wait for the third party stuff, don't mind if it has to go through Apple first as I'd rather have good-looking and quality apps.
as I know when u upgrade your iPhone via iTunes u don't lost every single settings (using Upgrade, not Restore) and changing the name of your carrier can be done by someway...so Upgrading ur iPhone to 1.1.3 (not Restore) maybe will leave it.
That's why the name of the carrier may still Nade without jailbreaking the new 1.1.3.

It’s got nice looks, I agree with that. Yet Mobile Google Maps or Live Maps with true pin pointing positioning through real GPS was there a while ago both in Map and Satellite views. Also rearranging and moving icons about on the screen or secondary screen was there already. Even browsing with multiple Tabs and scrolling through pages. Or sending SMS to multiple recipients.
So in my view, it has nice UI but to really improve needs to change from within hardware big steps.

iphone firmware update,jailbreak, bull shit... guys, get a break.
From what I gather iPhone users fall into two groups - nontechnical apple computer users who like (as an apple commercial put it) a device that is SIMPLE and intuitive, and people like me who want to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their computing devices. Just to let you all know, jailbreaking can be undone, will not brick your phone if you follow the directions exactly, and provides access to hundreds of IMHO really useful and fun apps, like Navigon, ToDo, VNSea, iSMS, Springboard theming, and on and on. I think I speak for most of us jailbreakers when I say that it would be great to see these functions sanctioned by/from aapl directly, but why should I forego having them now just to make Papa Steve happy? I for one am going to keep updating to the latest jailbroken firmware, so I get the best of both worlds, and hope that aapl get on the ball once the SDK rolls out, but I'm not holding my breath.
OK, so we can see NATE in the upper corner, but they don't show the settings and about screen in the video, which would clear up if the unit says 1.1.3....right?
Seems odd they would try to show it on the bad video quality web cam, but not on the good quality video.

What I've always wondered is why we don't see some good quality GPS's actually use Google Maps?? Instead of having to go to the website and running it online

I purchased my iPhone about 2 weeks ago now and absolutely love it. But, I've been reading many of the forums (like this one) and have come to the conclusion that the features and applications are out there, just not at our disposal because of Apple? My question is Why? All the jailbreaking articles I've read state that the iPhone can be broken. Additional applications are out there. Additional features are out there. I wish Apple would just make all this wonderful technology available without all the hastle? You have a fantastic product. Take off the reigns and let the consumer enjoy it freely.
