2008 Bloggies nominations now open
This is a friendly reminder that nominations for the 2008 Weblog Awards (a.k.a. "the Bloggies") are now open, with dozens of empty text boxes just waiting for your input. There are actually a number of categories in which this scrappy young publication would seem to fit nicely, such as best sports blog perhaps (just take a look at this selection), or maybe best gossip blog (again, our record speaks for itself). Not that we would be so bold as to try and influence your selections in any way, so we'll simply point you to the Read link and wave goodbye with our biggest, toothiest, most political smile.

I suddenly have the urge to vote for Gizmodo... :P

What?! Engadget is a shoe-in for the Apple category.
oh..wait..

I mean, I want to nominate this site, as it is the better of the major tech blogs. But the huge load of Apple stories, and the iTrolls that swarm all over this site as a result, makes me wonder what am I nominating/voting for.
I want the best tech blog to win, not the best Apple fan site posing as a general tech blog.
And if you think that is a problem, the actual Apple fans have to decide which tech blog pushed their favorite company the hardest in 2007.

I think Engadget is seeing something of the same effect Slashdot did when they first implemented comments - far too many that were crap, and many very good comments would be buried and unread. The real telling part about this is that people are often posting offtopic replies to the first couple posts, so their comments are actually read. The stats posted yesterday also bear this up - with an average of 60 comments per story (and some FAR more) the system needs a significant upgrade.
The oft-wished-for "Edit" button should definitely be added, but that's not all. The moderation system is still really primitive here; I'd like to see something really innovative with ranked levels and possibly moderators (perhaps not, but it's a thought). I like what Joystiq does by making the low ranked comments more transparent, but they still take up room on the list. At the very least, I'd like a way to view only those comments "Highly Ranked" or above. Filtering the noise out is difficult.

Ok, I think I've started something that I really didn't intend to do.
I was only joking with my comment since the article clearly implied that we should vote for Engadget - which I will do. I only said Gizmodo because I know it's another gadget blog-type thing, not because I'm seriously voting for them - it was the first one off the top of my head. Sorry for any confusions.

I'll vote for you if you post the winning entry in the 'trick out my home theatre' contest.
