I think Engadget is seeing something of the same effect Slashdot did when they first implemented comments - far too many that were crap, and many very good comments would be buried and unread. The real telling part about this is that people are often posting offtopic replies to the first couple posts, so their comments are actually read. The stats posted yesterday also bear this up - with an average of 60 comments per story (and some FAR more) the system needs a significant upgrade.
The oft-wished-for "Edit" button should definitely be added, but that's not all. The moderation system is still really primitive here; I'd like to see something really innovative with ranked levels and possibly moderators (perhaps not, but it's a thought). I like what Joystiq does by making the low ranked comments more transparent, but they still take up room on the list. At the very least, I'd like a way to view only those comments "Highly Ranked" or above. Filtering the noise out is difficult.
