Xbox Live outage: day 11, "up and running", except not
We're well aware the first three words on the Xbox Live service status box are "up and running," but those issues are continuing to persist, and if our flooded tip jar and the Xbox Live forums are anything to go by, they're probably not just "intermittent". If you're (still) seeing issues, as always feel free to shout it out, as well as hit our poll so we can keep track of just how severe this stuff is. (So far, of those polled who've been trying to use Live, roughly 75% responded that they've been experiencing moderate to severe issues.)
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Status now reads "up and running," zero caveats. Let's hope that's the way things stay! Thanks, xboxman.

Come on, do we need yet ANOTHER Xbox LIVE RSS feed for a bunch of Complainers, and PS3 fanboys to post Negatives comments on LIVE. One Topic on this matter would have been enough, what's it's been now, like 20 times this topic has been posted. We all get it. LIVE has been having problems for a lot of people. God is engadget SONY biased. No wonder such Blu-Ray fanboys. Blu-Ray and Sony, goes hand in hand. Milk the LIVE problems for all it's worth.
i have a 360 but don't play online (have a ps3 as well but also don't play it online, not my thing, i like story lines) but my roommate has xbox live gold and he hasn't been ably to get any part of it to work for over a week now. hes pretty pissed. (he pretty much only likes to play online.)
Why the flipping hell are people defending Microsoft for having a pay service that's been kerfuddled for 11 days, off and on?
I mean, my god, what the hell kind of soul do you people have that are willing to up and say "Oh well, I pay for this, these things happen! doo doo dooo dooo.. WHAT THE HELL? Why are you complaining? Don't you know these multi-million dollar companies have feelings too!?"
I mean, seriously, there's fanboyism, then there's extremely disturbing capitalism, and then there's just absolute insanity, and some of you people fall into all of those, somehow or another.
If you ask me, I'd prefer it if -every- site would report on this, constantly, hourly, just to knock MS down a lot of pegs, and not just the blogs, MAJOR sites, and I wish the fact that MS was locking down posts of people complaining on their official forums would get publicized wider. That should be known. Especially by these nuts that seem to think Microsoft is a more community oriented company (Which they are not. Nor is Bungie, which is commonly believed... One of the main guys on there won't even read PMs.)
Well heres the thing- these things DO happen, and a lot of times you can't do anything about it. My cable provider? They have issues every once in a while, but THINGS HAPPEN, WHETHER YOU LIKE THEM OR NOT. THATS why people are defending them, is because this is the FIRST major issue EVER since Xbox LIVE was started.
What they do for their community is FAR greater than Sony has done for theirs. Yes, PSN is free, but has no features that compare to the 360, nor do they have a great community site, hosted competitions, events and the like.
SHIT HAPPENS, and Microsoft is being bashed ENTIRELY TOO MUCH over this ONE little issue, so if you would be so kind, and SHUT THE FUCK UP. Its people like you who make issues out of nothing, and without people like you and Ryan Block, Engadget would be a better place.

See, people can't say a damned thing without lobbing an insult to the competitors. What's up with that? This isn't about Sony, or anyone else.
AND let me frigging tell you, every time there's a big demo or something on Live, there's lag and connection problems, at least for an hour. Without fail. ALWAYS. They have the foresight of drunken traffic loving squirrels.

It's 11 days. 11 Frigging days. Anything else would have immediately responded to the community about the issue after day 6, and would be talking about compensation.
If you ask me, this rumor of compensation will come up with nothing, and after that.. the fanboys will defend that, and no one is going to report on it.
And 11 days of screwed up service is HARDLY "nothing". But I guess when you're knee-deep in defending MS at all costs, everything is nothing!
Someone, please fire Ryan soon. This is just ridiculous.
I think it's ridiculous too. And what pains me alomost as much is people who try telling me to calm down and not get aggravated over it.
I have spent my spare time in the Christmas holidays staring at a blank lobby on Call of Duty 4, trying in vain to invite my friends in. When it does invite them (which is rare), it usually just kicks them back out again, or if by some miracle it puts you into a game, that usually times out or tells you "The Host Ended the Match", which is untrue.
Half the time, it tells me I need "an active network connection" whilst I'm on private chat to somebody (where do they think the bandwidth for this is coming from?).
I'm a massive fan of XBox Live but I'm really considering moving over to PS3. Their online play may not be as functional or as popular or indeed as much fun - but at least you can get a damned game on there.
$50 is a lot to pay for such bad service, but consider that I'm from the UK where it costs £40 - that converts to $80 for pathetic service and up to now, no sign of a fix or even the decency of an apology from Microsoft.
It's a real kick in the nuts.
My Xbox is only 3 days old and i got the Gold Membership together with the purchase, but was only able to play Call of duty online twice for around 2 hours.
Not very happy with it, but i guess we are meant to be out on new years eve.
Happy new year all
This sucks for those who purchase the 1 month and 3 month cards because our time is limited and now people with the full year memberships are getting restricted play time come on microsoft get it together and shut down the service if you need to get all the kinks out or pony for more servers what ever the problem may be.
GT kdmc1
I would be very unhappy if I subscribed to XBOX live !
YOU DONT SAY?
Now that the servers are online, let's see if there's another post.
Xbox Live outage: day 12, "up and running"
"Xbox live is sooo much better". "It's worth paying for". Friggin talking points of idiots who bought a 400 piece of unreliable crap trying to defend the crappy online "pay" service of Microsoft. "Washed out graphics" mean nothing either, just some stupid crap you read on some stupid game review site like IGN. you people are sick. Any excuse to drink more Microsoft Jim Jones koolaid and throw money down the drain because you can't get refunds on the unreliable crap you bought. you couldn't even play games during xmas vacation for goodness sake! You don't even truly "Own" the games if you can't play em whenever you want. you are all sold out to Microsoft. idiots. Microsoft stepford wives. I hope you get RROD on your 360th 360. Stupid.
For those of us with RSS feeds, the reminders are great. I for one come to this website first for my tech news, and it's where I found the most comprehensive information about the outage (including a link to the great site: Major Nelson, of which I had never heard of prior to the posts on this site).
I say keep th posts coming. Those who are sick of it need not waste time reading them (let alone posting in them).
still have problems while playing to COD4...
Gosh, this is annoying !
Yes. My three six tee is getting fixed right now.
The problem, in my eyes, is big. I know that some of you claim that it is the best thing like "it" out there, and you're right. On the other hand, MS knows this as well and justifies charging for it. ALSO, they make money on advertising within "XBL" and on Downloadable Content. Microsoft has been around the "online-community-block" since long before the Xbox was even a fart-of-a-dream much less the 360 or XBL and so should have known that durring **CHRISTMAS**, five years after going online with XBL and having the most popular gaming system of our time in so many homes, the system would be "stretched" to limits it hasn't seen and been ready to adapt. So many people are just beginning to use XBL and are so annoyed that they may just be lost as future customers which hurts Xbox/Microsoft and us (faithful XBL users). XBL is a HUGE selling point over the competition and when it craps out for 2+ weeks durring the most anticipated gaming month this year, and in the most anticipated gaming year of all time...OUCH! Shame on Microsoft. They have the means, and we all know the money. This is why some of us are SO upset. It's a principle issue as much as it is a severe inconvenience for dedicated gamers.
i agree spent over a week just chatting in the lobby of call of duty 4 (christmas present) and lastnight all eveing trying to get a game in halo3.
thats without the fact dashboard freezes like my console has crashed.
5fixed 360 consoles and now a xbox elite only for this issue with live to happen.
i love live but the money i spent this christmas on the latest realeses just makes it seem pointless and a waist of money.
why why live dont you just shut down live for 24hours and fix it.
just fix it its doing my nut in im fed up.
and the comment about $80.00 and $50.00 in the us just really makes me mad like game realeses why are we always last to recieve games im not against the us but dont forget europe is a massive place and makes up microsofts wages.
treat us the same and sort it out please.
I havent been able to play any game. I cant recover my profile anymore and it seems its stuck in the middle of no where! I use to recovery on a friends xbox then when i would go home i would re-recover it...so now i cant use it on his or mines because the dang recovery wont work! It always times out!
call of duty 4 is finished rite now.. no gettin in to games at all
I didn't have time to read all the comments so if I'm stating the obvious or rehashing the apologies. One of the last posters who says COD4 is done, kaput, etc. is right on. I fought with it over an hour. At one early point I was lucky enough to get about half a game in when the host "ended the game" and that was that.
I called Xbox to get the status from the horses mouth and the rep, who said she had looked it up, said that they are still updating their servers. What that means for an ETA is anyones guess at this point.
Major Nelson isn't updating his page much anymore with the exception of the twitter babble. He made a twitter post late last night (presumably PST) saying that "LIVE is looking pretty good now....how is it for you guys-n-girls?" Sure, it's running great when most of the XBL community is sleeping. Sorry, Major, that's annoying.
I am still having issues connecting to xbox live and its disgusting me, i am sick and tired of putting my hard earned money into microsoft to get nothing but shotty materials. First you tick me off by charging hundreds of dollars for an operating system that I have to update constantly. then like a fool i buy your gaming system, I've had my 360 since 2006, the first one I had broke exactly one month after i purchased it and fortinatly i was able to get a replacement from gamestop, unfortantly i was at that time stuck with another crappy microsoft product. now a year later and after purchasing atleast 20 games for this system i am paying 40 something a year for internet service and paying for these "points" to download things for games I ALREADY PURCHASED, now xbox live isnt working? thats messed up this company is a multiBILLION dollar corporation and yet they can not produce anything that is worth the money we all invest into them. HELL I should have known better since all i've been doing since I've used a computer (win 3.1) is constantly update and fix issues that this corporation has created by mass producing products without having a concept of quality control.
if you can not even bring us customers a non-stop connection to a device I know i've dished out over 1,000 dollars to use then what good are you? its getting worse and i am fed up with it.
anyone want to buy a xbox360? i would almost have rather bought the wii atleast then i wouldnt have to worry about what tricks microsfot is going to pull tomorrow.
and now that i've vented
