The old cliche informs us that a picture is worth a thousand words, and in the case of Jeffery Stephenson's PC enclosures -- that's most definitely true. His latest design comes in the form of a sleek, tiny deco-styled wooden box, crafted from a disused cigar humidor and loaded with a VIA NX15000 Nano-ITX motherboard, 1GB of RAM, and a hidden optical drive around the side. The end result comes off looking like some time-warp artifact straight out of
Bioshock -- and leaves us wishing Mr. Stephenson would get into mass production of these babies. Hit the read link for
far more details on the case, and be sure to check out Jeffery's other amazing designs.

BEAUTIFUL. I want one!

Seriously - I don't think I've ever coveted a custom built case before. This is very cool. Makes me want to take up wood working.
Ethan @ Jan 2nd 2008 2:15PM
I know how to work with wood, and this makes me want to build one. In fact, I think I will!
waiownsyou @ Jan 2nd 2008 3:01AM
This looks cool, but I'm sure heat dissipation would be a bitch and the house will be filled with weaksauce if this thing were to catch on fire by bad circuitry
drakono @ Jan 2nd 2008 8:23AM
Just because something is made out of wood doesn't mean a single spark will ignite it.
Also, heat isn't meant to "dissipate" out of a case, it's meant to be vented out. The material of the case doesn't matter as long as there is a proper amount/location of case fans and vents. (Looking at the page, though, I see the creator didn't include a single case fan or vent. But he did at least place an opening for the large heat sink/fan combo on the bottom.)
SFO Kevin @ Jan 2nd 2008 12:39PM
There seems to be a series of holes in the back that would allow for ventilation... With those and the heatsink ported out the bottom I think he has done a good job of dealing with the heat issue
rolex replica @ Jan 3rd 2008 11:11PM
Heat dissiaption is not a problem since it uses VIA's nano motherbaord and C7 chip which only generates 1 watt in average and therefore does not even require a fan.
So, for people who wish to save energy and/or noise then VIA's chips (C7 ULV) is the way to go and they are also cheaper than AMD's and Intel, too.

I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Jan 2nd 2008 3:02AM
It's called Art Deco not Bioshock style and was prominent throughout the late 1920's to 1940's, however trains kept using elements the style in to the 50's.
Jeffrey Stephenson has been at case design for many years now and Art Deco is a constant recurring theme he loves to use.

Ok ok. We know it's not called Bioshock. but thanks for the lesson ;)
Brian @ Jan 2nd 2008 5:56AM
@Intrepid --> No joke.
@I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY --> Comparing it to Bioshock is a compliment.
Wwhat @ Jan 2nd 2008 8:08AM
I call it an attempt at art-deco and failing.
I've seen much better examples of using wood for a case.
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Jan 2nd 2008 11:06PM
Bioshock sounds like somesort of electical cattle prod.
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Jan 2nd 2008 11:06PM
Bioshock sounds like some sort of electrical cattle prod.

Wow, they're not joking about the time warp. The web page says it is from January 7th, 2008.
Phaedrus @ Jan 2nd 2008 4:27AM
Looks like scratch-built....not a "disused cigar humidor".
Jeff @ Jan 2nd 2008 4:31AM
Art Deco >> anything. So optimistic and victorious.

bghozali @ Jan 2nd 2008 5:49AM
It's not made from a Humidor. I meant that it does not say anywhere on Mr. Stephenson's website that this particular design is made from a Humidor. He has previous designs that include a Humidor, but not this one.

Happy New Year...

Looking at the rest of his case mods, I can only think one thing:
Dude must smoke a lot of cigars...
Abba Shaib @ Jan 2nd 2008 9:33AM
Art Deco, Bioshock, whatever! Damn thing looks good!
OneLove @ Jan 2nd 2008 10:08AM
It wont play bioshock. :)
lou @ Jan 2nd 2008 10:48AM
WOULD YOU KINDLY offer this for a good price?
Lupe @ Jan 2nd 2008 11:55AM
That tree-case looks great, And a VIA C7 CPU is a great choice since they only use 1 watt in average and are quite cheap, too. Great for most users except gamers. http://www.ismb.edu.ro/Subpagini/linkuri.html

So is this where Mr. Stephenson got his idea from or did he create this as well?

The Decomatic is much, much larger than the G-metric but I did use the same proportions for the length, width and height.
To understand just how small it is you should view this photo:

daniel @ Jan 2nd 2008 8:33PM
I've never heard of this guy before, but seeing as his website is "slipperyskip.com" and the poster of the Ars Technica mod is "Slipperyskip", I'd say that he made both of them.
