gOS 2.0 "Rocket" set to debut at CES
Considering the absolutely lackluster hardware present in the Everex gPC, it's a tad difficult to get psyched up about the next revision of the gOS. Nevertheless, gOS 2.0 (or Rocket, as it were) is all set to launch on Monday at CES, and while there's not much to phone home about, the inclusion of Google Gears is the most notable feature. The aforementioned bundle is an "online / offline synchronization technology from Google that enables offline use of web apps." More specifically, users can look forward to gBooth (a browser-based web cam), integration with Facebook, shortcuts to launch Google Reader, Talk, and Finance on the desktop, an online storage drive courtesy of Box.net and Virtual Desktops, which is hailed as "an intuitive feature to easily group and move applications across multiple desktop spaces." Additionally, Adobe Flash Player 9 for Linux will come preloaded, and if you're so inclined, you can download the package yourself on January 7th.

"Additionally, Adobe Flash 9 for Linux will come preloaded"
You missed a key word between "Flash" and "9": Player
Anyways, i'll be sticking to Ubuntu for all of my obnoxiously simple linux needs.
gOS is it a official google os or a linux distro ?
No, it's an unofficial one.
It's Everex's Distro for the gPC, the idea is that it's "greenOS" and "greenPC" (or thats what i remember).
It's basically loaded with Google Goodies and will suffice until google puts out a real man's OS
I hope that they offer a gOS distro that will run on the XO.
Gah! They made so many mistakes with this system, it's really not all that hard to make a good Linux distro for one friggen machine (it's distros for a wide variety of machines like Ubuntu or Fedora that are hard to make).
They need to drop the desktop environment for Gnome or KDE, heck even XFCE! Enlightenment just isn't going to cut it for this system, while a great environment, it's just not practical, if they want that look, they can get it for a lot less of a footprint. The google bit is nice, but sooo over done. They seem to be working from the top down instead of building it from the bottom up!
Yawn! Boring and useless..
Perhaps boring to the experienced user.
The inexperienced user however might just find this extremely useful and easy to use for the crushingly basic stuff.
Another Apple-wannabe system?
I think the idea of mainstream Linux is promising, but they also forget that they need to really make sure that people understand that these WONT work with their Windows apps.
My cousin just bought one of these from Wal-Mart. He likes it, and it does what he needs it for, but he didnt realize that it wouldnt work with his other programs.
Im working with him to find Linux alternatives, but its just kinda funny how it doesnt even have a big warning or anything that it wont with your other apps. When I was looking at the box, I was expecting a significant sized warning.
Of course, Wal-Mart wasnt going to tell him that. He said no one even offered to help him (typical of the store).
Thankfully its not at all a big deal, because I can help him with it.
wow when I first glanced at that, I thought "why would somebody photoshop a pic of OSX?"
oh...wait
I wonder what the ipod icon is for?
Good point... the only way to use a newer iPod with Linux is... um... well, you cannot.
Apple is willing to harvest open source software for it's own profit (Safari, etc) but not willing to give much back to the community. After all, it gives iTunes away for free but cannot seem to recompile it for Linux, which ought to be a no-brainer compared to the Windows port.
No skin off my nose. I'm using Amazon's new service on my linux Nokia N810. Go-Go-Gadget Boombox!
what games can you play?
Google Gears is still in Beta and the only app that actually utilizes the gears function is Reader. For non-tech users, gOS could be the one great and low cost alternative. For the tech... you could slap that E7 desktop on top of your existing Ubuntu install and add the gears beta.
