LG to demo "MPH" mobile TV system at CES
It looks like the stumbling transition over to digital television here in the US is about to get a little help from LG, which is planning on showing a new mobile digital TV system called MPH at CES. MPH, or Mobile Pedestrian Handheld, is based on an existing system called vestigial side band, or VSB, and can be retrofitted to existing digital systems, enabling a wide range of services -- even to vehicles traveling at highway speeds. LG says it spent two years and $7.4M developing the tech -- we'd say our TV habit is totally worth it.[Via MocoNews]

Hmm, US highway speeds? Wasn't this what we call "traffic calming" over here? ;)
I never quite understood why US car buyers always insist on these huge inefficient engines when they never go much faster than our inner-city traffic.
But at least you have good TV reception...

I would surmise that this is intended to supplement existing ICE (In-Car Entertainment) systems and would be used as an alternative to the very bulky and expensive tracking satellite dishes. Most states have laws about entertainment screens being viewed by the driver while the car is in motion, so this would be ideal for that next minivan with flip-down screens for the rugrats. It should help minimize "are we there yet" questions by putting the children under the spell of the networks.

I do agree, however, that the handheld version of this has some scary implications.
