Lumus-Optical's LOE-based glasses get pictured
Just as expected, Lumus-Optical is all set to showcase its microdisplay-packin' spectacles at CES, and while it doesn't seem that the technology has changed since we first heard of them, we've now got a slew of photographs to go by. Apparently, the glasses will boast twin microdisplays and an ultra-thin LOE lens, which can purportedly immerse the wearer by creating the effect of viewing a 60-inch screen from ten feet away. Also of note, the company claims that unlike gaudy alternatives, these won't make you look like a complete tool, but judging by the image above, we aren't so sure that's entirely accurate.

LOE-based and LOL eliciting!
Someone smack that guy.
Asha @ Jan 4th 2008 12:22AM
I think that the fact that he is wearing those glasses is punishment enough. they are UGLY!
Raymond @ Jan 4th 2008 2:50AM
Yeah, look at that fake smile of his. He knows he'll never get a date once that picture spreads on the internets.
Zegora @ Jan 4th 2008 2:57AM
His haircut is as cool as the glasses...
Fubar @ Jan 4th 2008 7:48AM
Looking like that, he could get beaten up for being a geek--even at an IEEE meeting.
superfresh @ Jan 4th 2008 8:34AM
Don't you idiots watch the news? That's clearly Hilary Clinton. Sorry about Iowa, Senator. Love the shades.
FrankTheCrank @ Jan 4th 2008 8:39AM
I want to smack that guy with my laptop....maybe even my PS3.
He's so friggin jolly, just look at him.
Mickey Jones @ Jan 3rd 2008 11:51PM
Cool! Now I'll get the babes.
blackfeather @ Jan 4th 2008 2:05PM
Who needs babes when you've got virtual babes in your sunglasses?
... oh yeah - me.
Mickey Jones @ Jan 3rd 2008 11:53PM
That "Flock of Seagulls" haircut isn't helping things.
Fubar @ Jan 4th 2008 7:48AM
But it goes so well with his Devo glasses and his goofy Mark Mothersbaugh smile!
Chris @ Jan 3rd 2008 11:54PM
It might be cool but can you really picture yourself picking up chicks while wearing those.
Andrew @ Jan 4th 2008 12:09AM
I think if you're simulating the experience of watching a 60" television, your attention is probably not even on chicks.
If you decide to quit watching television in favor of girls, I believe you would simply take them off.
Oliver Kot @ Jan 3rd 2008 11:55PM
it only looks gaudy until 50 cent popularizes it.
austin @ Jan 3rd 2008 11:59PM
since when has fiddy made anything popular?
i dont see people wearing bullet-proof vests out n about
nikola @ Jan 4th 2008 3:31AM
He made vitamin water popular and sold it to Coca Cola for a $100million. Does that count?
OH!
Michael LaFramboise @ Jan 4th 2008 12:00AM
"...I'm nerdy to the extreme, whiter then sour cream..."
psxp @ Jan 4th 2008 12:30AM
and that my friends is how "ghey got started.."
Gene @ Jan 4th 2008 12:33AM
I think we've all thought about that...
Sure... it'll be nice...
But, one does have to wonder how such conveniences may take away from our privacy, and possibly our security... I mean... it WILL be cool, there's no doubt about that... But... what problems will it cause is what we don't know...

Chaj @ Jan 4th 2008 12:56AM
How about wearing those glasses and watching porn while having sex with your average looking boyfriend/girlfriend? Now that would be hot!
T-Bone @ Jan 4th 2008 1:29AM
So this is what the 80s would look like with better technology?
Karim @ Jan 4th 2008 10:45AM
No, it's what Marty McFly would look like after traveling from 2015 back to 1985 in order to have his hair lightened.
martijn @ Jan 4th 2008 1:29AM
640x480 resolution.... I think I'll wait for the 1080p version
boynamedsue @ Jan 4th 2008 2:08AM
if those came in white, with one red lens and one blue lens... i would totally rock them.
oshean @ Jan 4th 2008 2:55AM
What's up with the implant in his neck, is it required to use the glasses?
prttymf8 @ Jan 4th 2008 2:58AM
Just what I always wanted, to look like I'm at a 3-D movie all the time.
euclid @ Jan 4th 2008 4:28AM
People meeting that dude need the glasses more than he does ... to protect themselves from being stabbed in eye from that rhino-horn like adams apple.
Bad Beaver @ Jan 4th 2008 5:43AM
I love how... some... geeks in this place descend like hungry crows on every halfway decent looking male model they see, tearing it apart while raving about how the promoted product would interfere with them picking up "chicks". Most of them probably look like the ZUNE-tattoo-dude. Face it guys, the only thing you will pick up is this gadget. All hail online anonymity.
Landon @ Jan 4th 2008 9:51AM
That comment just wins.....hard....
bob @ Jan 4th 2008 7:17AM
Heh, in another few years, they might actually look like reasonable glasses, except blue. While the technologies pretty cool, I don't think anyone would be interested until they pass for normal wireframe glasses/sunglasses. Without the little square projector thing on the side. Now, for a display like that, 1024x768, 80 Hz refresh or higher, 16 bit colour, durability to match a ThinkPad, wireless data and power (I heard about that a while ago, you can get really low powered, low range stuff on wireless power already, more to come eventually), and discrete and lightweight source for the wirelessness, I'd be willing to pay...about $5,000? That's provided they last for at least 5 years. More for longer, but you'd have to guarantee me they wouldn't look as out of style as aviators or Wierd Al glasses. Well, at least it has potential.
Brian @ Jan 4th 2008 7:18AM
I would totally wear them. I don't care if they look like glasses from an American 80's film... think about what they DO. Awesome!
Z @ Jan 4th 2008 7:23AM
Looooove the photo. LOL.
It's like if Miami Vice and Revenge of the Nerds had a kid and he just got out of a business meeting.
This photo is almost as bad as the really old Apple-driven "Mac vs. PC" photo ad, from 1996. Prepare to gouge your eyes out: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/the-dorky-genesis-of-those-im-a-mac-ads-238442.php
Chris Aubeck @ Jan 4th 2008 8:28AM
The company may have no advertising sense (or shoot the photographer) but the device is probably still worth having for long trips, warm evenings in the garden, working from the lavatory, experimenting with your dog. I can picture a world in which airport and tourist information staff wear a version of these, even policemen. But the company needs to shave those frames down a tad and work on their colour scheme.
huh @ Jan 4th 2008 10:38AM
Some of you people have no imagination. Sure, you could pick up chicks. Nerdy chicks. And yes, there are attractive nerdy chicks. I'd be more worried about being robbed, or heckled by low imagination types.
The n95 has a composite video out that would match with this nicely. These are also nice in that they are translucent.
CosterMonger @ Jan 4th 2008 10:55AM
Geordi La Forge wouldn't wear those,
try making one side red and the other blue
Charles @ Jan 4th 2008 11:18AM
Hey, I don't have a problem with the glasses, in a cool geek kind of way. But why does it look like he swallowed an iPod Nano? Some kind of new Apple Karoke feature? Darn, that Dr. Jobs is always ahead of the curve...
palehorse @ Jan 4th 2008 11:48AM
a few points...
1) Who the hell cares what you would look like in the places you'd use these? (subway, airplanes... work?!)
2) Can the translucent feature be turned off?
3) Can they paired via bluetooth or some other wireless transmission method? This might be a good use for Belkin's new wireless HD standard.. (WHDI?)
All-in-all, if these produce a genuine large-scale video image, with decent resolution (720p?), they would be amazing to own!
Ultimate device combo? WiFi-Camera-PMP-microprojector-phone, with bluetooth stereo headphones, and wireless HD transmissions to glasses like these. woohoo! :)
caubeck @ Jan 4th 2008 12:15PM
"But... what problems will it cause is what we don't know..."
Gene, make me a list of those unknown problems and I'll put your mind at rest.

is it April, 1st today?
Take a look at the guy, c'mon! He's definately from the 90's - his hair, his jacket, the entire style of the picture... This is more like a photobank picture, one of those that you get as many as you want for $50 /year :)

Will be fun to watch people while they are wearing these. You'll be sitting on the train, enjoying a nice, quiet read of your paper, possibly even dozing off, when suddenly the young girl next to you - who is watching a horror movie - gets to a scary bit...
