Sony's finally getting really, really serious about the Memory Stick. The company is launching a hefty 16GB version of its loved / hated MS Duo. There's not much else. It's a Memory Stick Duo. It's 16GB. It will be available in March for $300. Enjoy.
As Dark_Alex has already said, PSP with a current firmware can support up to 1TB of drive space, and 1.50 homebrew has been patched to support the same amount as well. Yay 16GB
No one uses Memory Stick and still Sony pushes it only creating more headache for consumers in the market. It's like only Sony's products that are using Memory Stick and there is no advantage to it. They will eventually give it up, like they did with their music format. Talk about a stupid idea. Sony, start using SD!
Vaio users, Cybershot users, Walkman Users, Sony Ericsson users, Handycam users, and most importantly, EVERY PSP USER
and since Sony have just released the PSP download store for PC, this is a great idea! To start using SD now would cripple Sony, because every user of every Sony product would complain
I think that is the first time anyone has ever accused Sony of doing anything to keep prices "lower." Congrats.
If anything, their insistance of using proprietary formats is a way to fight competition and keep prices higher, much like Apple does with their iPod/iTunes/FairPlay threesome.
Cash: I was referring to other formats keeping prices lower to compete with Sony. I have a Sony camera that takes both Sony MS and Compact Flash, naturally I use Compact Flash.
Why the low rank? This is the very reason why I refuse to own a Sony product. The one and only time I bought a Sony product was an MD player which was a huge piece of crap. Check in, check out, ATRAC, blah blah... It could have been a great product except for the reason above.
wow, only takes on person in the world to prove you wrong.
I'm actually glad Sony doesn't listen to all the complainers and at least they try to do things rather than not innovate.
A lot of people aren't tied to just the cost of things (main complaint of SD advocates) and they are the ones you don't hear on the boards too much. They're also the ones that don't buy a car just because it is cheap.
100$ for a 8gig, i'd buy one immediately. unortunately, here in belgium, they just replace the dollar sign with a euro sign, so i end up paying 100€ (or about 150$) for a 8gig. maybe prices will drop a little with the new 16 gig coming.
16 GB rocks for the PSP. You could put several dozen PS1 games there and make the thing truely portable. When hand helds can become cart or umd free then they will truely reach the next level.
I agree. The only thing that really bugs me about sony products is this damn memory stick. SD is a much better format. Just start using it. Geez. Other than that, GO BLU!! lol. $300? I just bought a 16gb SDHC for under $100. If only I could use it in one of those very nice new Sony HD camcorders...
$300 is a bit too expensive. I mean the 16g itouch is around $400. The PSP is around $200 and this 16g is make it pretty unreasonable buy of $500 total(you're better off with a PS3). I use to bitched about a phone or mp3 with no memory stick but when I look at the price I have to paid for the Sony Ericsson phone and on top of that the overly expensive memory stick.
"I commonly need to boot a system from an external disc and take a snapshot of the host system. I also then need to burn a copy of the image to a DVD. While I can do it with two separate external devices, and two power supplies, and two I/O cables, it'd be nice to find a small dual-drive enclosure. It would need to have USB, eSATA, and FireWire. Either slim-line or half-height bay for the optical burner would be fine, and space for either a 2.5- or 3.5-inch hard disc. Any ideas?"

Sweet! Should be good for phones and PSP! :D
i'm pumped!
Very nice! Not being picky or anything, but I think I'll wait for 32Gb.

You don't have a PSP do you?
Yeah, what assholes, making competition, sparking innovation, keeping prices lower. Where do they get off?!
Yes, No-one uses Memory Stick.....EXCEPT........

lol i dont think he does,
but can the psp support such a high storage pro duo
do you even own anything sony?

Zune/Xbox Live Marketplace come together?!!

Why the hell don't they include support for SD cards in the PSP? I have to buy the more expensive Pro Duo.
16 GB is awesome for their HDD HD camcorders.

Way too expensive for 16 gigs, I've never liked the Memory Stick Duo. I still have a 512 MB for my PSP.
Thanks, but I'd rather enjoy my 16GB SDHC that I got for $80.
Don't worry. Just wait a couple months and you'll be able to find this for about $60.
beat me to it. I'm getting an 8gb for 35 from newegg for my D2 though. Can't trust myself with the 16gb.
@ Hashbrown_Hunter
Keep on dreaming. The 4g is still around $50 and 8 is around $100. Best you're hoping for is $200 by the end of the year.

but now, of course, i want the 16 gig
$300?! But I'm poor!
I know thats a lot of money for a little thing that can store that much, im confused on wether to save or be outraged.
yeah I have a psp and a SE phone but i wish i didn't have to buy a memory stick to expand them, they're just too expensive
yeah new memory is always expensive. a few months it will be half that

I'll wait a while. By the time 16 GB is worth $20, 128 GB will be out.
This'll be sweet in my trusty K750i. Plus it will make it probably the oldest, most storageded (?) phone in the world (TM). Micro memory cards, pfft.

But the PSP has a better screen, plays games, and cleans your house, especially with homebrew.
...because the PSP, PS3, and iTouch are even in the same market?
16GB? thats almost 9 full UMD ISOs on one card; nice!
$300? thats a decent 7-8MP digital camera Aand a 16GB SDHC; gotta love Sony!
It's even better if you CSO 'em!!!
:D
I don't think the PSP even supports these. I thought the limit on PSP memory was 4GB by Memory Stick, according to Sony.
So why are all the PSP users dancing in the streets? Did they change this limitation or something?
Firmware updates added support for the 8GB MS, so one can guess that they'll probably do the same for the 16GB MS.
Even with some of the firmware updates, home brew has to be run from the first 4 gigs. That effectively limits it still.
@ZeroCorpse: Yes they did.
WOW, I hope DA or anyone of the other devs can get this to work with the PSP!!!
That's great. Maybe now the price of the 8 GIG will fall down a bit.
