Sony's Rolly music player / robot coming to the US this spring
Everyone's favorite, lovable, and totally confusing music player / dancing speaker is coming to the States this spring. As we've extensively detailed, the odd little oval is packed with all kinds of zany abilities, not the least of which is playing MP3 or AAC files via Bluetooth with A2DP off of its 2GB (which is an improvement on the Japanese version's 1GB) of flash memory. No word on price right now, but you won't care once you see how darn cute the little guy is.

I would say this is up with the iPod...one thing that surprised me was that you can program, as in tell it what moves to do, the rolly, which is pretty nice. any oled TV's coming to the US??? PLEASE!

WTF is this shit?! I thought it was a joke...
Sowman @ Jan 6th 2008 8:17PM
Stupid product. i guess when you're Sony you can afford to release a product like this into our market.

Is the part about it "playing MP3 or AAC files via Bluetooth with A2DP off of its 2GB (which is an improvement on the Japanese version's 1GB) of flash memory" correct. Unless i am getting really really old, you dont need bluetooth to play from internal memory, correct?
Ramifications @ Jan 6th 2008 8:37PM
I was thinking the same thing. Either you play off of internal memory...or you stream through A2DP bluetooth. Not both at the same time. That would make no sense. Engadget writers...please fact check your stories!

weird but i love it
only sony
Chris Macdonald @ Jan 6th 2008 8:39PM
has anyone figured out what exactly it is yet?
Geoffrey Sperl @ Jan 6th 2008 10:49PM
It's a trojan horse of some sort. I have to assume there's a larger strategy it fit into for Sony and they aren't letting us know what it is.
Or it's just a dancing MP3 player.

You give Sony too much credit.
Mike Street @ Jan 6th 2008 8:40PM
This thing better be $10 at the most otherwise it's a hunk of junk and no one is going to buy this piece of crap.
fitinferno @ Jan 6th 2008 10:03PM
if i could programme this lttl guy to wake me up at a certain time and then fly off the nightstand right before i can kill it to make it snooze so that way it annoys the crap out of me until i get up and wake up to shut it off....well, that could be incentive to purchase it then.

I still dont get this thing but for some reason i think it and products like it will take off. I mean if wii fit takes off god only knows what other gimmicks people are willing to blow money on.
Scott @ Jan 7th 2008 8:49PM
Nice analogy, except Wii fit is supposed to actually be fun.

This device actually reminds me of the nabaztag/tag, the French wi-fi connected "rabbit" with programmable ears.
There's a note on the Rolly and Nabaztag at techtonic.org, including links to the site (in Japanese) where you can download "motions" that other users have already created for their Rollys.
