Once we heard that Dell was showing off the
XPS 630i "compact" desktop and
16-inch, 16:9 XPS laptop concept at its booth / lounge, we headed right over the moment that the show floor opened. Unfortunately the notebook was locked behind a glass case, precluding any real face time with the prototype widescreen system, but luckily we were able to get right up in the grille of the 630i to check out all the angles. Of course, you'd rather peep some pictures then hear us drone on about our impressions, so check out the gallery below for the full package.

What about the new Alienware stuff? I read they were at the Dell booth.

630i is a very valuable edition to their gaming line up. I currently have an Inspirion 530 which I modded and added a 8800 GT too. I runs great.

hey did you have to upgrade the power supply? How else did you mod it?
Chebwa @ Jan 7th 2008 2:09PM
Hooray for 16:9! No more 16:10 please.
George M. @ Jan 7th 2008 2:25PM
Does it run Crysis?
Sean @ Jan 7th 2008 2:25PM
Someone needs to take some decent pics. All of those are blurry
Kido1986 @ Jan 7th 2008 2:26PM
My thoughts exactly Chebwa. I wish everyone would go 16:9, laptop AND desktop. I wish I could get a 1080p 24" 16:9 monitor, Id give up the 120 pixels.
I'm thinking of buying the 32" 1080p Sharp Aquous but if only it had PIP :(

The reason why everybody is doing 16:10 instead of 16:9, is because 16:10 is much batter if you actually want to use the screen as a computer without having to scroll too much. 10:9 is more suitable for movies, which sadly in most cases aren't even filmed in true 16:9.
I want my TVset in 16:9 but my computer screen in 16:10.
Kido1986 @ Jan 7th 2008 3:36PM
I guess it's all a preference thing.
BTW, how is there any more scrolling. Even at 1080p, there are only 120 pixels missing at the bottom from 1080p16:10
My primary display is my 27" HDTV @ 1360x768. I do slightly more scrolling than I'd like but if I had 1920x1080, scrolling wouldnt be an issue at all.
I watch a lot of downloaded tv shows in HD so 16:9 is good for that. But then again, it's all a preference. Everyone has theirs.

What pricing do you think we can expect for the 630i?
What graphics card options will there be?
Will it be released nearer to the Intel Wolfdale processors?
So many questions, but support for newer processors is most important for a future proof desktop.

Notebook Review had the good photos scooped on Sunday without all that nasty acrylic to get in the way. http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4180

A little thing called flash can get rid of that pesky grain and produce clear pictures. With all of the cameras and tech gear you all review you would think a nice camera would be part of your arsenal...
PiZ @ Jan 7th 2008 2:49PM
...welcome 16:9!! =)
AgNe @ Jan 8th 2008 4:27AM

ME WANT ALIENWARE INFO!
giantenemycrab @ Jan 7th 2008 3:40PM
Boy, that 630i could be revolutionary if the price is low enough.
Michael LaFramboise @ Jan 7th 2008 3:45PM
at first glance, from the top looks all great... but then you look at the side, and its all the generic pc laptop crap - same ugly black plastic, same ugly ports everywhere; holed like cheese, and on the bottom probably more stickers then one can count... Why in hell is it that only Apple realizes that design doesn't stop at the back of the display...
