Video: DLP prototype makes gamers look geekier
Tired of getting blasted by your bro (or sis) on split-screen mode? Not wealthy enough to pick up a spare console, game and HDTV to solve the dilemma? DLP's got a new prototype that's seeking to squash said quandary by allowing each gamer to see different on-screen images. 'Course, this new hotness requires that you both rock an uber-nerdy set of glasses, and if you're curious to see what Mahalo Daily's Veronica Belmont looks like with 'em on, click on through to take a peek.

Not really a prototype, it's available today according to the guy.
thats actually a cool idea. too bad split screen will probably be phased out, with the emphasis on online.
Split screen isn't going anywhere as long as the people playing the games want to play in a communal fashion. I like gaming with my friends in a room on split screen, for a lot of games there's too much going on to even get a chance to figure out where your opponent is.
This girl is the next morgan webb
Luckily, she doesn't have a Manjaw.
The next Morgan Webb? I don't think so. Unlike Morgan, Veronica is really good on camera, has a good speaking/presentation style and is cute as well. I enjoy Veronica's reporting and she's nice to look at while doing that reporting.
Nothing personal against Morgan but she's stiff as a board and horrible on camera...I won't even say anything about her looks because beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
the only problem is that there are no games that currently support this technology (which is 3d technology put to different use) it not only prevents screen cheating but it can also make it seem like bullets are flying past your head and debris is to crush you. sweet shit
Actually, I think it could be used with current games. You would need to have 2 separate consoles plugged into the device. Multiplayer gameplay would be over the network, not on 1 console... I think.
If the right person cared, getting it into warsow, tremulous, nexuiz, or something like that shouldn't be too hard.
But yeah, when you don't have the source, you are completely powerless.
Intermittent frames, 15 real FPS. That may be more helpful.
Good luck with that, by the way.
That reply was directed at someone else, to append a previous reply of mine.
...it could be simple human error, but I'm kind of paranoid...
...Regardless, it wouldn't be here any more if we had post edits...
yes, it is using 3d technology, but as he said, you will only be seeing out of one of your eyes, so there would be no way of making it 3d in multilayer. it would definitely be possible in single player though.
Wow, that's pretty awesome. Too bad those glasses look awful.
What is this, "how many times can we link to Mahammamaatabato Daily" week? I know, I know.. It is CES. But these videos really haven't been helpful and it just comes across as shameless promotion of a friend's site at the cost of many pointless stories.
Please give it a rest and go back to finding real stories.
Brian - I agree with you that maybe this video wasn't the best example, considering that you can't actually see what I was seeing through the glasses, but in general I think video can do a lot to show a gadget in action. But then again, I'm totally biased. ;)
This was neat to see Brian. Engadget has been posting stuff consistently all day. That's not enough for you?
I disagree Brian, I think these videos are a nice addition to the CES coverage, and I think Veronica is doing an excellent job!
yes, but how would this work with my xbox? i see no way unless i system link 2 systems together but plug both into the one tv. Doesn't make much since, but maybe i'm missing something
I'd try to get real 3d support into some ioq3 based game, mod the xbox, and use linux with nouveau.
I'm trying to get QJoyPad integration and a gaming mode (hibernate the DE to save RAM) into Ubuntu. Nouveau on gallium only gets better from where it's at.
Yeah, it would only work with one system if it was designed for this. Otherwise you would need to systems.
With a tv like this you could have two people playing 2 different consoles on the same TV. The problem would just be sound then.
*two
Prototype? I had these 20 years ago as kid! Fun times with Missile Defense and a bout of Epileptic Seizures!

Errr... Must have had another seizure....

you are right about split screen not going any where and about the online i mean i love online i play all my games that have online features online but its still fun to go to a lan once a month and be able to trash talk in face and meet new people in person its just the real human interaction adds another touch to it
If that woman tuts one more time I'm going to throttle myself. She's not even British!
So this uses the same type of technology as 3D with shutter glasses, right? But instead of two separate images for each eye, it's two separate images for each person.
Why didn't I think of this?
Looks like SONY has already patented this technology for the PLAYSTATION:

This is uber-cool. Add this to the mirror bulb technology, and no burn in, and this would make for uber spectacular gaming experience. Can't wait till this comes out!
