Lexar to license Eye-Fi's WiFi SD tech
It's hard enough to get noticed in the camera storage market, and while Eye-Fi's 2GB WiFi SD cards have certainly gotten some play, the company is teaming up with Lexar to promote the tech to a larger audience. From what we can tell, Lexar won't be making any changes to the core product, just lending its brand name, but details are slim at the moment. Lexar will be showing off Eye-Fi's stuff this week at CES, maybe they'll let some release info slip in the coming days.

And how about tweaking this thing a bit and enabling it to pull stuff in instead of spitting it out. That way all the CHEAP frames that flood the market could become WiFi enabled

If you plug this in to a memory card slot of a computer, will the computer be able to detect it as a Wireless adapter?

Again, a good 1st generation product that needs some software refining to be a great product.
I don't want to wait for it to upload to flickr and then have to re-download the pictures to my computer. What is that?

What'd be freakin' great is to have it be SDIO compatible and work bidirectionally, so I can use it in my Treo (why the damned thing hasn't got Wifi, I don't know). I don't need massive range, even just the 30 or maybe 60 feet so that I can synch with my desktop which of course doesn't have BT. Oh.. and allow me to stream Music off of my HD of course :)

I think this has great potential... A definite step in the right direction.... way to think outside the box!

I have one of these and I agree with the other posts here. It works quite well, but really isn't especially useful most of the time. I'd like the ability to transfer video and have the option to upload to my laptop before my smugmug account.
Matt, I like your idea to be able to download photos to a picture frame wirelessly would be awesome (especially if it could grab them online sites).
FYI in case any other eye-fi owners noticed the disconcerting lack of https... the password information transmitted via the eye-fi manager appears to be encrypted ala TSL. Their tech support folks didn't give me a satisfactory answer when I emailed them about this but I ran a packet sniffer and confirm the TSL handshakes between my laptop and their server during login. My email, first name, and last name were sent in the clear as session identifiers when I clicked around the web-based interface, but my eye-fi and smugmug passwords weren't. I'm puzzled why they don't have anything about the lack of https in their FAQ, but whatever.

I agree with Charm Merchant. I have absolutely no clue why they couldn't get this thing to be a SDIO wi-fi card for pocketPC and smart phone users. If they can fit Wi-Fi onto a miniSD, I don't see what's keeping someone from making something for us SD card users who wish our devices had built in wi-fi. Maybe Lexar might see the light.

Id like to see it function a little more as a NAS, that way we could wrap it in anti-rejection silicon coat, and have em put into our arm for virtually undetectable IN/OUT storage of sensitive data that cant easily be found/stolen while in 'tricky' situations. That'd be gold. Is there any clues on hacking the webserve software thats installed on these things deslock?
