The n95 is a case in point. There are three different versions of it, all running significantly different versions of firmware. n95 is at v20, n95-3 is at v12, and n95-8gb is at v15. And they've all been updated within the last month (a bit longer for the n95, with the latest version). Why is this? It means developers can't develop an app "for the n95" (not to mention all the other Nokia products) and consumers are never sure (because it's such a maze) what will run on their phone. It sure doesn't build confidence.
As well, Nokia will not update their devices, even if the hardware would support it, past a current version (s60 v3.2 feature pack 1 in the n95's case). Whereas an iPhone, or an open Linux based phone, very likely will have updates available as long as the hardware supports it. Big difference in the long run if you don't like upgrading every time a new update comes out.
I don't understand their build process, it must be very inefficient, or else is entirely marketing driven.
