If the HD DVD format lives to see the day, then we'll be carrying around these swank portable players. They're just concepts, and that screen is as
dead as HD DVD is to Warner (it's just a picture). But man do they get our man juices oozing something fierce. They're almost good enough to make us hope HD DVD wins the format war. Almost.

Not if Toshiba makes Blu-ray versions.
SimbaDogg @ Jan 8th 2008 8:21PM
Because they can?
derX @ Jan 8th 2008 8:24PM
..."But man do they get our man juices oozing something fierce."
Okay, I'll ask the uncomfortable question.
To what juices are you referring and why are said juices oozing (and in a fierce manner, no less)?
[BTW, per usual, just jokin' around here. LOL]

you have to be a man to understand
Marcin @ Jan 8th 2008 8:30PM
wow those are hot.
pavan @ Jan 8th 2008 8:52PM
this wont be released...HDDVD is near as dead, sorry, but blu-ray has won
Fredster @ Jan 9th 2008 4:52PM
WOW , never heard that one before!
Droford @ Jan 8th 2008 9:11PM
They arent exactly portable looking though.
dave @ Jan 8th 2008 9:44PM
i never wanted blu-ray to win but i did want a conclusion to the format war and im still glad its happening but i really wish that hd-dvd could have been the victor. its just such a more open and not crap format which has a proper interactive system that works, isnt beta as far as i know and the whole setup is a lot more affordable, friendly and cheap. though i must admit blu-rays copy thing is the direction i have been waiting for movies to go in for ages. maybe in 20 years theyll give us drm-free movies?
anyway the point is this hardware is so much nicer than the blu-ray stuff ive seen and the hd-dvd players ive seen are slim and under bankruptcy causing sums. its just a shame...
kyle @ Jan 8th 2008 9:46PM
what is that - like a 10" screen? why the fark would you need HD on that?
Reid Conti @ Jan 8th 2008 10:16PM
Precisely what I was thinking. You can't get HD in a computer monitor until you get around or over 20".
WTF?
Generic @ Jan 9th 2008 10:05AM
well, think of having a large HD-DVD collection in a probable future and you don't have a portable player for your most coveted eye-balls treat
Chird @ Jan 8th 2008 10:01PM
Is it me or does that carryhandle design look eerily similar to the XPS 2010?
BigDave @ Jan 8th 2008 10:05PM
RICKER! boy i just hate every single CES post you have made! by far the most incompetent reporter for engadget!
jon @ Jan 8th 2008 10:16PM
even if they dont make the market i want one... i have about 80 hd-dvd movies...
toshiba send me one i will pay for it...
they need to keep pushing hd-dvd i dont care for blu ray... i have a ps3 just in case toshiba gives up the good fight... but they need to keep trying, they know they have the better format, cheaper, customer friendly better interface... storage capacity doesnt mean anything, but most people will say it does and truly how much space do you need for a 2 hour movie... seriously...
toshiba keep the movies a rolling... start putting hd-dvd into computers and everything else imaginable, cuz you have a customer for life in me...
the present is blu...
the future is red!!!

Seeing how anti-Sony this site is, it doesn't surprise me the slightest a little aesthetics would sway your vote...
Kevin McGillick @ Jan 8th 2008 11:29PM
would you really be able to tell its HD on a small screen like that. Not worth it
Unregistered @ Jan 9th 2008 1:05AM
Agreeed, it doesn't make any sense to have small screens for the sake of portability. if i want portability i wont bother with hd in any form
J-Horror31 @ Jan 9th 2008 3:07AM
Yes! Why would anyone in their right mind want to watch an HD source on this size screen!? Especially since the PS3's Blu-Ray to PSP transfer ability has been officially announced! I don't want to watch HD content on laptop size screens when I'll be able to watch my Blu-Ray on my PSP!
Get real people
Matt @ Jan 9th 2008 5:19AM
Agree; screen is a -little- small; but they do look very nice =].
tbuiler @ Jan 9th 2008 10:28AM
Are no other parents paying attention to the format war? My main reason for choosing HD-DVD was the fact that I could get most movies in Combo DVD/HD-DVD format so that I could play movies for my kids in the minivan.
There would be absolutely no point in me buying a Disney or Pixar movie if I couldn't play it in the car.
It'll be 10 years before Blu-Ray has an affordable portable player. I guess it's back to DVD's for me...
JBDragon @ Jan 10th 2008 12:55AM
No Blu garbage for myself, Looks like it'll be DVD's for years to come. It was also a good Idea, why buy 2 copy's of the same Movie. Yes, Sony would like you to. Buy your Blu-Ray copy for home and a DVD copy to play everywhere else. Make more money that way. No thanks. No plans to buy a PS3, and will never buy a PSP, and that seems to be the case for a lot of others that are out buying more PS2's.
zunq @ Jan 21st 2008 3:03PM
It's too bad we may never see them, I never would have bought into high def if it weren't for affordable HD-DVD. If I had to choose now, I'd do it again. If the consumers want to pay more then so be it, I'll just to stick to DVD's.

FINALLY!!!
I'm SO tired of 10 inch, 800x480 portable players, the screens become a total blur-fest when watching fast-moving content.
I hope those screen are 1920x1200 resolution!!!
Slot-loading drives as well!!!
Hurry up & put these things into production!!!
