20GB and 60GB PS3 discontinued in Japan -- PS2 backward compatibility ends
At the end of this month, Sony Japan will no longer carry the 20GB and 60GB Playstation 3 SKUs. Instead, they will focus their energies on promoting the relatively hot selling 40GB model -- the only model available after January. That means no more backward compatibility for PS2 games in Japan. No mention of a shake-up globally but it's pretty clear that the 40GB PS3 is Stringer's new love child.

upgrade Hard Drives that is
OMG! Something I own made by Sony has just appreciated!!! :)
80GB sucks and the 40GB is pathetic, I have the 60GB and I enjoy playing PS2 games on it as well as PS1 that can also be played via PSP remote play that is a cool thing to have. If they do put emulation on the new systems they wont be as good and not all of the games would be playable. As far as the hard drive size thats not an issue since it's easily upgraded unless your a noob. The extra USB are great since they have a death clock now I have 3. Wireless is great because it goes well with the PSP connecting straight to the console instead of going through your router and never had lag issues either. Sony is dropping the ball here just like MS dropped the ball by not adding HD DVD drives. I never owned a PS2 but now I can say I do in a way.
FYI: If you do play PS2 games a lot and you are missing out on the rumble of the control do yourself a favor and get the import dualshock 3 I just got mine and it kicks ass.
question for anyone who owns the 80 gb ps3... has anyone done good extensive testing on those low fi rpg's that atlus imports... what i miss most about my ps2 is those rainy day rpg's
so much for ALL those promises
come on sony shove a 3.5" HDD in there
and more ram
do we have to wait for the PS4 to come out so we can repurchase 12 PS2 games off the online sony store?

How to upgrade your PS3 HD. Really easy to do. I've got a 200GB PS3 at home right now, works fine.
You can't put a 3.5, because the bay isn't big enough. What I'm curious about is if you could put a SSD in there. It would cut down on heat and hopefully improve performance.
How much time before this gen of consoles is obsolete?
I'm guessing 5-7 years.
Blows my mind how Sony got everyone to by off on Blu Ray.
Kind of a dumb move on Sony's part, but then they aren't making any secret that they perceive the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player first and a game console second, so it's probably all logical to them.
It's dumb, though, because the PS3's game library is lacking. It would be nice to see more PS3 games worth playing, but in lieu of that, I'd think they would embrace the backwards compatibility feature. Really, I don't see why they couldn't put a PS2-on-a-chip in the damned thing. It might increase cost by a couple bucks, but that's worth it when you can get PS2 users to make the "logical" upgrade to the PS3 instead of jumping ship to the competition's consoles because if they can't use their PS2 games anyway, they might as well go to a console with some kind of decent games library.
Sony's screwing themselves here.
Of course, I fully expect them to suspend PS3 games design in about a year, and tell everybody, "Well, you've got a Blu-Ray player out of it, right?"
Instead of gutting the PS3, Sony should have left everything in it. To drop the price, should have dropped the 20GB HDD and made it a "supply your own HDD."

Oh, what shyte. I will not buy any "backwards incompatible" PS3. Screw you, Sony. I can't play Spyro (and other PS2 games) on that ShyteStation.
...so buy one with BC.
I don't know what you guys are complaining about!!! This is exactly what we have had in the UK since the launch of the PS3 here last March & have had no problems with it. 60GB UK Model has the "software" BC & no hardware EE, & the 40GB model launched in October 2007 here has no BC other than PS1. These SKU's from the UK are the ones being now sent over to Japan. The only SKU we have over here now in the stores is the 40GB 'crippled' version (thankfully I managed to get a 60GB version before everywhere sold out). The "software" BC is not that bad at all if I am to be honest. I have over 90 PS2 titles and all of them work flawlessly including some that Sony deem to have issues when played on the PS3. Having the same SKU's worldwide will help Sony to start making money from the consoles, plain & simple. At least you guys overseas don't have to pay the extortionate costs for the consoles that we do here in the UK (£299 = $600USD for the 40GB!!!!!).
I'm so happy I got the the 60GB way back in February for just $500. All I had to do is trade in my ps2 at ebgames and since it's the 60GB, it should have been a no brain decision for anybody...
Is there anyone in the US still selling the 60GB boxes?
