After we heard ASUS stepped into Crazytown with two new terabyte-capacity laptops, we knew we had to swing by the booth and bust out our cameras. It seems like the company has really been stepping up its game both on the design and spec front, with a solid build from the sleek black top and touchpad-integrated media controller, straight on down to the Core 2 Duo CPUs and -- of course -- the ultra-gigantic storage space. Peep the gallery below for a full on tour of the two systems.
If one could shut off the trackpad function but leave the remote function in place, or vice-versa, then I see little issue with it. Those controls would be handy if one was using this laptop with a mouse.
I wouldn't write off the idea yet - it's nifty if it's implemented correctly. But it looks like an incredibly easy idea to screw up.
Mostly I think form follows function, but this is one ugly laptop. I'm sure the specs are great ... argghhh. Did they make the cam from a strike plate on a door? Did they run out of black? Media controller on touchpad? And that serves what purpose other than "we did it first?" It's one of the ugliest laptops I've ever seen.
looks like it should do everything i need it to do?.. too many apple fanboys.
sure the speakers look kinda ugly/cheap(what laptop speaker isnt?) but everything else is decent.. touch pad being off center isnt really off centre at all.. lines up smack dab in the middle of the keyboard minus the num pad, which makes alot more sense to me then in the middle of the laptop itself. media controls on the touchpad are also a pretty good idea, how often to you sit at your desk watching a movie?.. never, i'm usually slouched on a sofa or reclined in a plane, last thing i want to do is reach towards the bottom of the screen to change the volume or skip to the next episode of Heman.
It's nice to see these 'hands on' galleries, but they all seem light on details. I can't find specs for the M50 anywhere online. All we have are press releases about 1TB storage. I'm actually more interested in the ATI Mobility HD 3000-series graphics card they apparently use. Ultimately I want to know what the TDP of the 3400 and 3600 chips are, and whether we could see one replace the 20watt Nvidia 8600mGT in the MacBookPro next week.
After reading your comment, I thought wow the trackpad is off center, thats got to suck. Then I looked down and saw http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/gallery/qtvr15.html Relative to the home row keys, the MacBookPro is the same.
But the Mac's alpha keys are in the center of the notebook. The Asus has the numberpad too. I suppose if need a number pad that might be helpful but I'd prefer to have the screen, keyboard and trackpad all lined up.
PS: It's rumoured that the next Apple notebok trackpad will be very wide to allow for multi-touch gesturing, beyond the currently dual-touch gesturing. I'm curious to know how efficient that will be.

I haven't seen any Veronica in about 12 hours. What's up with that?
OMG....
too much distraction, she got canned.
That is one ugly laptop!
PS: What is this obsession with Veronica Belmont? Does girl + technology = spooj fest?
"What is this obsession with Veronica Belmont?"
OH FFS! SHE'S FREAKIN HOT!
Media controls on the touchpad? Horrible idea.
Unless they are trying to make 1TB remote control.

I agree: it can have all the drive space in the world, but if it is THAT ugly no way I'm going to buy it
Jeez that webcam is ugly. Also, why may I ask is the touchpad off-centre? I have the same thing on my Acer TravelMate and it's a bit strange.
"It seems like the company has really been stepping up its game both on the design..."
You're kidding right? That thing is FUGLY!
Not to mention the off-center trackpad that's been mentioned.

What an ugly piece of product design!
And if it's a half-inch thick and 2 pounds or less I'll buy one.
