Intel takes an antitrust probe from AMD in New York
In addition to laying down the smack, AMD and the office of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo just slammed Intel with an antitrust probe. Cuomo's office issued a "wide-ranging subpoena" on Thursday seeking documents and more information from Intel. The probe was launched after a preliminary probe "raised questions" about Intel coercing customers to exclude AMD CPUs.

Hector hector hector........
where were you 5 years ago......
He said probe
I guess that's what happens when they fall behind the leader. Nothing left to do but to whine your way to top.
AMD finally get a shot at Intel about all of those illegal buisiness practices that has kept AMD from expanding to their full potential.
HEY! INTEL FANBOYS! YOUR COMPANY SUCKS!
despite their practices they do actually make good products (minus the P4), unlike other companies
Hey, AMD Fanboys, your processors suck!
Whatever...
How the hell can you be a fanboy for a processor? I mean, it's a tiny piece of metal. Who cares? Use what's a better product.
Adam, few people realize how true you statement is. I commend you.
Im an amd user, but I must say, this is all you can do to fight intel AMD? the customers dont care about lawsuits, they care about good, cheap products. Right now AMD has the price, but intel has the performance, which is why they are pulling so far ahead. Stop wasting time with lawsuits and fix the phenoms, and release this octo-core that you are supposedly developing.
apostrophe ftw

Agreed, AMD Fanboys your processors Suck.
OOOO You Got F'ed in tha A
what the hell is up with all these elected officials actually doing their job, first the fcc looking into isp's blocking ports, now this...
has hell frozen over?
AMD just can't seem to get it through their heads that Intel sells more units than them because they make a better product.
i think you meant that intel sells more chips because they have been at it a lot longer......
AMD has a long history of litigation with former partner and x86 creator Intel.[3][4][5]
* In 1986 Intel broke an agreement it had with AMD to allow them to produce Intel's micro-chips for IBM; AMD filed for arbitration in 1987 and the arbitrator decided in AMD's favor in 1992. Intel disputed this, and the case ended up in the Supreme Court of California. In 1994, that court upheld the arbitrator's decision and awarded damages for breach of contract.
* In 1990, Intel brought a copyright infringement action alleging illegal use of its 287 microcode. The case ended in 1994 with a jury finding for AMD and its right to use Intel's microcode in its microprocessors through the 486 generation.
* In 1997, Intel filed suit against AMD and Cyrix Corp. for misuse of the term MMX. AMD and Intel settled, with AMD acknowledging MMX as a trademark owned by Intel, and with Intel granting AMD rights to market the AMD K6 MMX processor.
* In 2005, following an investigation, the Japan Federal Trade Commission found Intel guilty on a number of violations. On June 27, 2005, AMD won an antitrust suit against Intel in Japan, and on the same day, AMD filed a broad antitrust complaint against Intel in the U.S. Federal District Court in Delaware. The complaint alleges systematic use of secret rebates, special discounts, threats, and other means used by Intel to lock AMD processors out of the global market. Since the start of this action, AMD has issued subpoenas to major computer manufacturers including Dell, Microsoft, IBM, HP, Sony, and Toshiba.

not metal...actually should have lots of silicium(is that hw its spelled?) in it...transistors and stuff =P
umm i hope all you fanboys know, if either one company is left standing, they are going to rape you without lube. The current prices of the processors are extraordinarily great! and if we didnt have this kind of competition we would be paying 500$ for a q6600...
exactly! we need both companies.
This is what I've been saying for years. Fanboys from both sides need to chill out. The world would be paying 5x the price if AMD or Intel tanked.
Am I the only one that didn't picture AMD as an alien and Intel as a lonely human strapped to a flat metal table with AMD holding a long pointy object?
You guys need to understand the seedy background of NY and AMD.
NY has been desperately trying to lure another chip fab to upstate NY, Malta, home of the Luther Forest Corporate Welfare Campus. They have come up with every misguided reason to justify the development include jobs (Saratoga County has the lowest unemployment rate in New York) to "smart growth" (they are cutting down 2000 acres of forest and building tons of infrastructure on undeveloped land) The locals do not want this. Finally NY committed 1.2 BILLION dollars to have someone, anyone build something here. The developers were getting embarrassed because no one wanted their "world class" fab site, so they finally coerced AMD to say they might build something someday (AMD has "committed" to "make a decision" by 2009. The local republicans have used this to go seriously in debt to build a water pipeline through the county so they can build housing developments with cheap water (the politicians literally own the private land adjacent to the pipeline).
So, now that AMD is seriously going down the tubes and is probably looking at a private equity buyout (if they're lucky) NY State decides to sue Intel which would increase AMDs competitive position.
See? All politics is local.
Leave it to an attention whore like Cuomo (I wonder if he has higher political aspirations, ya think?) to take on the "evil" big corporation. WTF. Intel keeps slapping AMD in the dirt because they continually come up with superior product. Why, you ask? Because they spend as much on R&D as AMD generates in revenue. They have a great R&D staff, and an and equally great manufacturing capability. When they begin to lose any momentary advantage in performance, seek out the nearest socialist legislator and cry "anti-trust". It is inevitable that Intel will ALWAYS dominate AMD. They are a better company with much more money.
I guess this is what happens when you fall behind the leader -- nothing left to do but whine your way back in the lead.
I really wish AMD would just concentrate on giving us integrated GPU/CPU's with one memory controller and virtualized graphics.
The long and short of it is april 2009 Intel will loose in delaware, two law suits against them in Japan will dent them and a few years later they will face severe penalties as a result of the new york anti trust investigation.
no one to blame but themselves.
I think the best thing is to just recognize each other, no? we all like/love computers. Who cares what you have for a processor. Just be glad that there are other people out there doing the same thing you like to do. We shouldn't be in a room divided because this half uses intel the other uses amd, whoopy do!!!
I am personally an intel fan. I use a MacBook Pro. Obviously I am an apple fan. Just because my best friend is a die hard M$ fan doesn't mean I stray array from him. I give some crap he gives me crap back its all good.
People on these forums are getting way to angry over a piece of silicon/gold!! Intel and AMD both make excellent products, its just a matter of preference which one you use. Instead of bashing each other for one person using intel and AMD maybe we should pool our efforts to lets say.....i dont know i cant think of anything right now. but who cares. Granted, Intel has not done some favorable things, but AMD just needs to suck it up and focus on their products.
If you think about it, we are all suffering because of the arguing. They are devoting way to much attention to the law and not the consumer, you and me. I really hope someone sees my point of view. I dont care who did what to who, just get me faster, better, cheaper processors!!!!
