Ah, the wonderful world of
personal GPS trackers. Upon gazing at the i-Tracker, visions of
Cheaters arise in our minds, but we'll try to keep the nostalgia at a minimum here. Transystem's latest -- which was proudly displayed at CES -- reportedly houses both a GPS and GSM module which enables it to transmit tracking information to one's PC or mobile in real-time. As expected, it can be controlled with a predetermined handset or internet-connected PC, and there's even an SOS button that instantly beams out one's current location. Mum's the word on pricing / availability, but make sure you clear that history after scouring the net in search of one.

This makes keeping tabs on where bitchy, heartbreaking, ex girlfriends are going to very very very easy...
If you're using it for that kind of thing, I guess

Hook it up to a constant power source and hide it in your car! Goodbye LoJack recovery, hello vigilante vendetta's.

Something tells me that this is too big to use on my keys...

cynicism aside, this would be useful for groups travelling to keep track of each other. more specifically, when one of your retarded friends gets the idea of taking a shortcut in an area none of you have ever been in. i travel up and down the northeast coast with friends via car, and this happens pretty often. also on foot, it'd be useful if a large group is meeting up, you have friends that tend to wander off in said group, or devising new geocaching games. for those of you who've never heard of geocaching, look it up. have some fun with your GPS.

Although, it's not too ridiculously big to be attached to the TV remote.

I always wonder how these devices "phone home". As this one claims to use the GSM network, does that mean you have to have a separate account with a GSM provider with SIM card?

Now I'm interested in this geocaching thing...
If you buy a GPS device, at like best buy or whatever, is there a subscription fee or anything that goes with them?
M @ Jan 13th 2008 1:42PM
Nope, using your GPS device is free so long as you're talking about one of the ordinary devices at any consumer electronics store like bestbuy or circuit city.
I have a Garmin Street Pilot and it works great!
