iPhoneCam streams video from your iPhone over WiFi
A fancy mirror contraption not quite what you had in mind for video conferencing on your iPhone? Fret not, friends; Ecamm Network is back at it, this time devising a way to stream video from the camera -- at 30fps, no less -- to the Mac of your choice over WiFi. Even better, the clever cats hooked it up with Bonjour, so the Mac just sorta sees it as a camera without any configuration needed. The possibilities are pretty endless (or limited, depending on your point of view), but we suppose it's nice for iPhone owners to instantly have a free, remote cam for iChatting, if nothing else. The download isn't available yet, but Ecamm is teasing that they just might be willing to demo it at their Macworld booth this week.

Those rocking UIQ, Symbian, WinMo and assorted Blackberrys can use 'Mobiola's Webcam' software to achieve the very same. (For a small fee.)
http://warelex.com/products/webcam/
It's a very lightweight, discrete application that works like a charm.
Nipponese @ Jan 13th 2008 7:10PM
Yeah, but it's for Windows. We are talking about macs here.
nerdtalker @ Jan 13th 2008 7:31PM
@Nipponese, Whether or not you like it (and whether or not I agree/disagree with it), I think the point that the OP was trying to make is that the webcam functionality on WM devices is significantly more evolved and polished, and doesn't require hackery and iBrickings to get working.
I'm not saying I agree or disagree (and it is frustrating as a WM owner to not have Live just work with your internal camera), but that was the point he was making, probably.

Actually guys, I was merely voicing that the rest of us on our Nokia's, Sony's, Blackberry's and Mobile 5 & 6 devices could benefit from similar, convenient functionality, should we seek to.
That is all.
Nic @ Jan 13th 2008 9:01PM
Movino does the same thing as Mobiola's Webcam but under OS X. And it's free.

Alan @ Jan 13th 2008 5:05PM
It looks nice but when are they going to release the software?
Evan @ Jan 13th 2008 5:13PM
I sure wish the Touch had an integrated camera...
Greg Poole @ Jan 13th 2008 5:28PM
Yeah, and SMS, EDGE connectivity and the ability to make and recieve calls... Sigh, wouldn't that just be the best?
Simon @ Jan 13th 2008 7:23PM
May I point out that SMS, EDGE, and calls all cost money for a monthly contract? A camera is a one off.
Conveniently missed the point, didnt you? And everyone ranks you high because they, like you, think its a smart argument.
Ian @ Jan 13th 2008 9:12PM
either that or they thought it was funny.. :) anyway
nickels @ Jan 13th 2008 9:24PM
yep it was funny :D
Zach @ Jan 13th 2008 11:31PM
nope, i think you missed the point ;)
[end sarcasm for greg/]
[ends own sarcasm/]
Simon @ Jan 14th 2008 3:08AM
Well im sorry I didnt find it funny! Maybe its because every time I say i wish my ipod touch had a camera, everyone immediately goes "Well why didnt you get an iphone then"
THEYRE NOT THE F"£$£ SAME!
james @ Jan 13th 2008 5:24PM
I sure wish the iPhone had an integrated camera in the front and the back...
Stephen Levinson @ Jan 13th 2008 5:30PM
agreed! What's the point of talking to another iPhone user with the camera app if you can't see them and they can't see you?
Actually all you would have to do is make alittle mirror thing like they did in the first place, but to make it smaller and more discrete so you can actually see the person you talk to.
Ally @ Jan 13th 2008 5:29PM
I'll take my intergrated iSight camera any day over this.
All the new macs have had integrated webcams for a while now anyway...
Reid @ Jan 13th 2008 5:43PM
... except the Pro.
austin @ Jan 13th 2008 6:24PM
...and the mini
rento @ Jan 13th 2008 5:32PM
Wow a third party application that most phones have already on an iPhone??? The world is going mad!!!
blinkcowz182 @ Jan 13th 2008 5:51PM
Did most of those phones have it within 6 months of the phone being released? Doubtful. Cut Apple some slack, they've done more with the iPhone in 6 months than some have done in years.
Ignacio @ Jan 13th 2008 7:14PM
"Cut Apple some slack, they've done more with the iPhone in 6 months than some have done in years."
No... 3rd party developers have. Actually, "hackers" because Apple hasn't released the oficial SDK yet. Hopefully they give more details about it during Macworld, before the February SDK release.
deano.public @ Jan 13th 2008 6:27PM
Good thing they announced this today, since come Tuesday bluetooth iPods and bluetooth accessories of all types will make hack devices like this obsolete.
Something IS in the air, and sorry all of you "MacBook Air", apple reader, and whatever-the-heck-else other rumors we hoped would be true - it's something obvious and lacking from apples product - Bluetooth support.
I for one am psyched about it.
austin @ Jan 13th 2008 6:51PM
huh? all macs have bluetooth standard
Meltz @ Jan 13th 2008 7:57PM
free ha
but yeah, thats pretty cool i guess
abyr @ Jan 14th 2008 5:10AM
This webcam app frames per second ratio is horrible on the demo video worse than with mobiola webcamera on Symbian phones.
deadlock32 @ Jan 14th 2008 3:57PM
lol not even that, my symbian phone (n95-3) can stream video directly to the net using this site:
http://comvu.com/
live video for others to watch, anywhere.
