BenQ's emaciated 8 megapixel DSC X800: just barely three-dimensional
It may not be the biggest name in consumer electronics, but when it comes to stuffing megapixels into ridiculously-skinny packages, there aren't many out there who do it better than BenQ. Case in point is the new eight megapixel DSC X800, which, at just 9.8 millimeters at its thinnest point (14mm at its fattest), is not only slimmer than the recently-announced DC X835, it even gives the company's trimmest seven megapixel shooter, the 12.5-millimeter DC X725, a run for its money. Besides its pocketability, however, this model doesn't offer much in the way of high-end features: 3x optical zoom, 3-inch LCD, digital image stabilization, VGA movie mode, and a rather non-standard microSD slot are par for the course here. Keep reading after the break for another angle / color combo of the as-yet-unpriced shooter, which should be shipping sometime this quarter.

i still like my sony t7. though only 5mega pixelx, it is much more stylish then most recent cams
Maybe I missed it, but what are the dimensions length wise? I don't care how thin it is, if it looks like I've got a cardboard poster in my pocket. And the lack of features (Outside of 8 Megapixels) is a slight turn off, but we'll wait and see.
What I'd like to know is the quality of this 8 MP camera. If I blew it up to a large poster size would it look like SD channels on a HDTV or will it actually look good. I hate camera manufacturers that just push MP as a selling point when in reality 5MP is enough for most consumers.
Agreed, sorta. MP isn't everything. How sensitive is the sensor? How noise free? I guarantee that a Nikon D50 with a 6MP sensor takes much better pictures than any pocket camera, but then the D50 doesn't fit in your pocket and with a decent lens cost well of $1000. In my experience bumping up the MP on these slim cameras is all about the marketing and just makes for bigger MPEG files. I mean, when you main optical element is made of plastic and is a half CM in diameter there is only so much you can do. Having said that, I have a little Sony camera. An SLR can be a pain to carry everywhere...
correction: an SLR IS a pain to carry everywhere, but when i get home and look at all of my photos and am able to have them turned into 20x30 prints without breaking a sweat, i am happy. Nothing sucks as much as having to haul a 7lb load-out for an entire day.
Sorry, I meant JPEG. Been a long day...
Quality wise, I'd guess that it will be horrible. If you need to be able to take shots anywhere anywhen at the expense of quality then a 5meg camera phone is a better bet, convenience wise, IMO.
Bigger, brighter optics and larger sensors without larger pixel counts will always take a better picture than more megapixels on the same-sized sensor.
But optics are expensive, and so are larger sensors. Making the pixels smaller and cramming more of them into each piece of silicon is a cheap and its easy to trick gullible consumers that more megapixels are better.
Interesting design...the lens is on the right side instead of the left...I wonder how many people are going to get their fingers in the shot.
Small cameras = teh suxx
If you're getting a smaller point-and-shoot, AT LEAST get the canon A-series.
@ thethirdmoose
So why do small cameras "suxx" Mr.LOLboy?
When you're in a suit such a camera fits nicely into your jacket pocket. I find having a bulge on my belt while wearing a suit to be "teh fails lolz!!11!"
small image sensor, low zoom
Even a canon a5xx or a7xx isn't that big, unless you are wearing tight pants o.O
@ thethirdmoose
Even those are "big" compared to those benq camera's. They cater to a different audience, and that one is pretty big I'd guess. So it makes business sense to keep manufacturing these things, and leave the dslr market to the traditional players.
Hinke
Looks kind of like a Kodak disc camera.
Dear sir,
You incorrectly refer to the camera as a "DSC X800." However, the picture clearly shows that the camera is a "DC X800." For a digital camera maker to name a camera "DSC..." would certainly draw Sony's ire.
加厚點,就能加手機功能了吧!
總覺得不出 3x 光學變焦手機是件陰謀...
