Apple's iTunes 7.6 plays nice with 64-bit Vista
Not only is the latest version of iTunes (v7.6 for those keeping count) required to enjoy those brand new movie rentals, but users with 64-bit Windows Vista machines can now look forward to using the software without issue. According to a number of tips, owners of said setups are apparently having no issues with it as of now. So, 64-bit Vista users -- for any of you courageous enough to give it a whirl, why not install iTunes 7.6 and report back with how things worked out?

So I did both the auto-update and then tried to uninstall and install the new 64bit version (with iTunes64 installer), and yet task manager says they're running in 32-bit mode, what gives?
At a guess Eric (I don't have iTunes running in front of me), I'd say that it's probably only the driver that they converted to 64-bit.
All drivers must be 64-bit on an x64 system, but the rest can be 32-bit and will run just fine.
Yeah, that's what I started thinking too, shame.
I run Vista x64 on my Mac Pro (not exclusively, but a hefty percentage of the time). It has 5GB of RAM, so 32 bit would be a waste on this machine. Ironically, iTunes and the iPhone were the only devices I had trouble getting to work under 64 bit. Now I can keep my phone synced with my outlook. Seems to work fine now. Thanks Apple!
After 10 years away from computers I have recently got a dell inspiron 1520 laptop. bought it to compile cd`s for home/car among other things and installed i-tunes 7.6, downloaded some songs ripped others from cd collection to compile a playlist but when i pressed the burn button in i-tunes i got a error message saying cant burn disc unknown error 2131 has occured aaarrrggghh!!! thinking about staying away from computers for good. Bloody frustrating. Any ideas out there????
I downloaded 7.6 a few weeks ago and it turned a ton of my mp3 files into MPEG files. What can I do to fix this?
sorry....forgot to mention i use Vista...
Yes I too finnaly decided to load 7.6 onto my Vista Ultimate (64 bit). (it's a rented laptop not my OS choice).
Suddenly I have BSOD. and continual BSOD
Reboot into safe mode but can't uninstall ITunes.
Finally removed all services except those needed to uninstall (application management, windows installer).
Started in normal mode, uninstalled Itunes, helper and Qtime.
Now no BSOD but no Itunes.
I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit NOT 64 bitand iTunes will not burn a CD from the application.
I have tried everything numerous times - regedit - deleting upper and lower filters - installing previous versions of iTunes - installing the Gear drivers - NOTHINGS WORKS. Perhaps Apple will get someont to write a program that works for windows instead of giving useless fixes and telling me to switch to a MAC.
Hundreds of dollars spent on iPods the family has four - and Apple smirks about Vista. Shame they have stolen my money.
Does anyone have a solution that really works.
I installed the new iTunes 7.6.0.29 on my Vista Ultimate(64), and I still am facing issues. No audio at all, when I try to play a track in my library via iTunes. Everything else seems to be fine...just can't get the damn thing to play!
The 'Play' button does not respond at all!
Put in a couple of posts on the Apple forums, and no response yet.
I hope they fixed the high memory usage.
+1 million on that. I'm sick of iTunes 7.5 using 700MB of RAM after a few hours....
Anybody know if the 1.1.3 upgrade works for jailbroken phones (ie make them virginized 1.1.3)?
So it play's nice with Vista 64 but does it make the iphone work?
First of all, I'm pissed that I bought the 64bit Vista because all its been so far is a freaking disability. And I have yet to see anything that benefits me because I have 64bit.
But I digress, to be honest I never really experience much problems with the older iTunes, besides it eating my RAM but I'm used to that because Vista itself GOBBLES down RAM. Oh well. I don't use iTunes anyways, I prefer Windows Media Player 11.
Bought the 64-bit Vista eh? All Vista retail boxes come with both 32 and 64 bit editions. Where did you buy 64-bit only Vista from?
@doubleyewdee -
OEM editions only come with one version
Yeah I got mine from HP so it was already installed and I the recovery discs are also only 64bit. I can probably downgrade down to 32bit if I download Vista 32 and use my key, but too much of a hassle. But Vista runs pretty fast on my 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa chipset with 2Gbs of RAM. But I'm also looking forward to the final release of Service Pack 1 =).
I have Vista 64-bit and 32-bit disk in my hand.
I installed both (one by one) and performed compressions.
Vista 64-bit with the latest BIOS version and drivers and software updates, works WAY better then Vista 32-bit. Many bugs found in 32-bit are not found in 64-bit.
We an see that Microsoft worked harder (or first) on the 64-bit.
So far, even my oldest software and games, works fine in 64-bit.
You should all try it out!
Specs:
- Geforce 8800 GT 512MB (also tested and get same Vista interface and video playback performance with the Geforce 6600 GT 128MB of RAM)
- 2GB of RAM 400Mhz DDR 3-3-3-6-2T
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ S939
- SATA-II HDD 16 MB of Buffer 7200RPM
Vista 64-bit FTW...
Now let me try this iTunes....
So, does this mean the iPhone will work with the 64-bit Vista now?
yep, iPhone + Vista 64bit = working =)
WOOHOO! The iPhone was the only reason I downgraded from 64bit Vista.
Looks like I'm heading back to 64 bits tonight.
God I hope that was sarcasm.
Bloody hell, that was close! I managed to get 02 to take my iPhone back after a month because it didn't work with Vista 64! That iPhone was the worst thing I ever bought. Just replaced it with a Vario III on T-Mobile.
The iPhone is nice if you want a phone and iPod, but the phone was simply far too locked down to be any use for me.
I only use iTunes for my iPod Touch. Just listening to music on my computer, Windows Media Player is the way to go. Faster startup time, lighter memory use, and better sound quality.
I don't think iTunes has ever played nicely with any version of windows.
Indeed.
iTunes on the Mac = not a bad piece of software, quick, stable, alright looking, etc.
iTunes in Windows = bloated, slow, looks out of place
So let me get this straight. 64 bit Windows, but NO Linux version? Now that's what you call hate.
You have to be using 64-bit Internet Explorer to download the 64-bit version. The only difference is a 64-bit GearSec CD/DVD Burning driver, the application itself and all of its services are still 32-bit.
Which is fine. Even some of Microsoft's own applications - e.g. applications coming with their webcams - are still 32 bit only. The only problem I had with iTunes on 64-bit Vista was the constant complaints about "missing" CD drivers at startup and the one I discovered yesterday where I wasn't able to read any CD/DVDs in any other program (including windows explorer) if iTunes were active; now that was a pretty major problem.
The post mentioned that the new iTunes will offer movie rentals. I didn't see that when I was browsing through the catalog.
Did I miss something?
It says it works with 64 bit right on the product page, er download page under system requirements.
Sigh, if people would only understand that Vista uses more memory FOR A REASON. It's called caching people. Rather than having free, unused memory in XP, Vista is actually using your memory to do something. Feel free to start a daily "Why does Vista use so much memory?" thread in a forum like HardOCP's OS forum.
I hope this info is right, I've been having to boot into XP 32 to use my iphone.
I am using windows server 2008 x64, and itunes 7.6 installs and works fine :)
Movie rentals is a great idea. There are nights where a group of friends can't find a movie, so we settle on something else. Now, any time, I can just rent it for the night.
Awesome.
I hope you are only wanting the SD rentals and not the HD. You'll be forced to purchase the Apple TV if you want HD rentals.
I don't have an hd tv in my room so... no. SD's just fine
64-bit Vista and iTunes...two things I don't want near my computer.
I honestly can't blame Apple for not expediting the process...64-bit Vista users are probably in a smaller minority than OS X users even (overall, not iTunes usage). I'm keeping away from 64-bit Vista for a while...used it for a couple months and had all sorts of fun compatibility and performance issues on top of the standard Vista ones. (MS should have forced Vista as 64-bit only, which would have dramiatically helped driver & app compatibility, but god forbid they drive progress instead of their sales).
i don't even have the courage to install 64bit vista :)
I CAN'T FREAKING BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Itunes is pretty much the only problem program I have had since getting Vista64, and I have been reading TONS of forums and posting for help, and even sent Apple an email asking for an update on the progress of a 64 version. Then yesterday a guy in a forum posted how he had had the problem still someone told him about the GearSec CD/DVD Burning driver, and it fixed his. So I installed it yesterday and it worked. Was so relieved.
Now what do they do? Fix it themselves. Only a year + later.
Oh well, least it finally works.
Just upgraded... No problems, works great :)
Works Great. I use Itunes because I like how it is organized. So when I first got my x64 laptop I was annoyed, then I got the Gearsec driver and all is well. But Last night I hooked up an ipod and it said i couldnt talk to it. So I am glad they fixed it just in time for me to need it :)
side note, only had one driver problem with vista x64. Easy resolve if you know how to use google
so I have 7.6 installed but I can't figure out how to rent a movie... the only option on a movie's page is BUY, no rent button anywhere...
I just installed iTunes for Vista x64. For my install, it took a little longer than usual, but I had a couple of things happening at the same time. The program seems fine, for the first time I can connect my iPod Touch to iTunes in Vista x64! Downloading the 1.1.3 for the Touch has proven more than irritating from Apple though... that's a different problem though.
I don't see any options for renting yet...
I have Vista 64-bit and 32-bit disk in my hand.

Now let me try this iTunes....
Sorry, it seams an error was done on my part, the above post is supposed to be a reply to "Eric M." post
YES! YES! YEEES!!! Finally I can use my iPhone with my main System! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just installed it; not much has changed. It still doesn't see my Apple TV dammit.
I wonder how long it will take someone to unDRM the rentals....
