Apple's iTunes 7.6 plays nice with 64-bit Vista
Not only is the latest version of iTunes (v7.6 for those keeping count) required to enjoy those brand new movie rentals, but users with 64-bit Windows Vista machines can now look forward to using the software without issue. According to a number of tips, owners of said setups are apparently having no issues with it as of now. So, 64-bit Vista users -- for any of you courageous enough to give it a whirl, why not install iTunes 7.6 and report back with how things worked out?

I hope they fixed the high memory usage.
Jason @ Jan 15th 2008 4:05PM
+1 million on that. I'm sick of iTunes 7.5 using 700MB of RAM after a few hours....
Eric M. @ Jan 15th 2008 3:16PM
First of all, I'm pissed that I bought the 64bit Vista because all its been so far is a freaking disability. And I have yet to see anything that benefits me because I have 64bit.
But I digress, to be honest I never really experience much problems with the older iTunes, besides it eating my RAM but I'm used to that because Vista itself GOBBLES down RAM. Oh well. I don't use iTunes anyways, I prefer Windows Media Player 11.
doubleyewdee @ Jan 15th 2008 3:25PM
Bought the 64-bit Vista eh? All Vista retail boxes come with both 32 and 64 bit editions. Where did you buy 64-bit only Vista from?
Paul @ Jan 15th 2008 3:31PM
@doubleyewdee -
OEM editions only come with one version
Eric M. @ Jan 15th 2008 3:58PM
Yeah I got mine from HP so it was already installed and I the recovery discs are also only 64bit. I can probably downgrade down to 32bit if I download Vista 32 and use my key, but too much of a hassle. But Vista runs pretty fast on my 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa chipset with 2Gbs of RAM. But I'm also looking forward to the final release of Service Pack 1 =).

I have Vista 64-bit and 32-bit disk in my hand.
I installed both (one by one) and performed compressions.
Vista 64-bit with the latest BIOS version and drivers and software updates, works WAY better then Vista 32-bit. Many bugs found in 32-bit are not found in 64-bit.
We an see that Microsoft worked harder (or first) on the 64-bit.
So far, even my oldest software and games, works fine in 64-bit.
You should all try it out!
Specs:
- Geforce 8800 GT 512MB (also tested and get same Vista interface and video playback performance with the Geforce 6600 GT 128MB of RAM)
- 2GB of RAM 400Mhz DDR 3-3-3-6-2T
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ S939
- SATA-II HDD 16 MB of Buffer 7200RPM
Vista 64-bit FTW...
Now let me try this iTunes....
Paul @ Jan 15th 2008 3:17PM
So, does this mean the iPhone will work with the 64-bit Vista now?
Brian @ Jan 15th 2008 3:25PM
yep, iPhone + Vista 64bit = working =)
JimJimBinks @ Jan 15th 2008 3:58PM
WOOHOO! The iPhone was the only reason I downgraded from 64bit Vista.
Looks like I'm heading back to 64 bits tonight.
Carbonize @ Jan 15th 2008 4:24PM
God I hope that was sarcasm.
Steve Childs @ Jan 16th 2008 4:34AM
Bloody hell, that was close! I managed to get 02 to take my iPhone back after a month because it didn't work with Vista 64! That iPhone was the worst thing I ever bought. Just replaced it with a Vario III on T-Mobile.
The iPhone is nice if you want a phone and iPod, but the phone was simply far too locked down to be any use for me.
dA @ Jan 15th 2008 3:18PM
Anybody know if the 1.1.3 upgrade works for jailbroken phones (ie make them virginized 1.1.3)?
webran61 @ Jan 15th 2008 3:18PM
I only use iTunes for my iPod Touch. Just listening to music on my computer, Windows Media Player is the way to go. Faster startup time, lighter memory use, and better sound quality.
mcatrage @ Jan 15th 2008 3:18PM
I don't think iTunes has ever played nicely with any version of windows.
Rollins @ Jan 15th 2008 3:23PM
Indeed.
iTunes on the Mac = not a bad piece of software, quick, stable, alright looking, etc.
iTunes in Windows = bloated, slow, looks out of place
Avian @ Jan 15th 2008 3:19PM
You have to be using 64-bit Internet Explorer to download the 64-bit version. The only difference is a 64-bit GearSec CD/DVD Burning driver, the application itself and all of its services are still 32-bit.
Andrew @ Jan 15th 2008 4:35PM
Which is fine. Even some of Microsoft's own applications - e.g. applications coming with their webcams - are still 32 bit only. The only problem I had with iTunes on 64-bit Vista was the constant complaints about "missing" CD drivers at startup and the one I discovered yesterday where I wasn't able to read any CD/DVDs in any other program (including windows explorer) if iTunes were active; now that was a pretty major problem.
jin @ Jan 15th 2008 3:20PM
The post mentioned that the new iTunes will offer movie rentals. I didn't see that when I was browsing through the catalog.
Did I miss something?
JP @ Jan 15th 2008 3:20PM
So let me get this straight. 64 bit Windows, but NO Linux version? Now that's what you call hate.
Daniel @ Jan 15th 2008 3:21PM
It says it works with 64 bit right on the product page, er download page under system requirements.
David G @ Jan 15th 2008 3:21PM
Sigh, if people would only understand that Vista uses more memory FOR A REASON. It's called caching people. Rather than having free, unused memory in XP, Vista is actually using your memory to do something. Feel free to start a daily "Why does Vista use so much memory?" thread in a forum like HardOCP's OS forum.
I hope this info is right, I've been having to boot into XP 32 to use my iphone.
Kamokazi @ Jan 15th 2008 3:24PM
64-bit Vista and iTunes...two things I don't want near my computer.
I honestly can't blame Apple for not expediting the process...64-bit Vista users are probably in a smaller minority than OS X users even (overall, not iTunes usage). I'm keeping away from 64-bit Vista for a while...used it for a couple months and had all sorts of fun compatibility and performance issues on top of the standard Vista ones. (MS should have forced Vista as 64-bit only, which would have dramiatically helped driver & app compatibility, but god forbid they drive progress instead of their sales).
bamboo @ Jan 15th 2008 3:29PM
I CAN'T FREAKING BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Itunes is pretty much the only problem program I have had since getting Vista64, and I have been reading TONS of forums and posting for help, and even sent Apple an email asking for an update on the progress of a 64 version. Then yesterday a guy in a forum posted how he had had the problem still someone told him about the GearSec CD/DVD Burning driver, and it fixed his. So I installed it yesterday and it worked. Was so relieved.
Now what do they do? Fix it themselves. Only a year + later.
Oh well, least it finally works.
Stevey 1337 @ Jan 15th 2008 3:30PM
Just upgraded... No problems, works great :)
Les @ Jan 15th 2008 3:35PM
Works Great. I use Itunes because I like how it is organized. So when I first got my x64 laptop I was annoyed, then I got the Gearsec driver and all is well. But Last night I hooked up an ipod and it said i couldnt talk to it. So I am glad they fixed it just in time for me to need it :)
side note, only had one driver problem with vista x64. Easy resolve if you know how to use google
mrstankpie @ Jan 15th 2008 3:41PM
so I have 7.6 installed but I can't figure out how to rent a movie... the only option on a movie's page is BUY, no rent button anywhere...
wjpooley @ Jan 15th 2008 3:57PM
I just installed iTunes for Vista x64. For my install, it took a little longer than usual, but I had a couple of things happening at the same time. The program seems fine, for the first time I can connect my iPod Touch to iTunes in Vista x64! Downloading the 1.1.3 for the Touch has proven more than irritating from Apple though... that's a different problem though.

Sorry, it seams an error was done on my part, the above post is supposed to be a reply to "Eric M." post
Roger @ Jan 15th 2008 4:06PM
I don't see any options for renting yet...
Roger @ Jan 15th 2008 4:11PM
I wonder how long it will take someone to unDRM the rentals....
petey @ Jan 16th 2008 5:50AM
has anybody found a solution for the non-rentals yet? not to my knowledge, so probably a long, long time. wmv files are a different story... if that's a concern, which it shouldn't be. breaking drm is DIRTY AND BAD.
Sam Coulson @ Jan 15th 2008 4:11PM
YES! YES! YEEES!!! Finally I can use my iPhone with my main System! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ryan @ Jan 15th 2008 4:16PM
Just installed it; not much has changed. It still doesn't see my Apple TV dammit.
Roque @ Jan 15th 2008 4:19PM
Still don't see rentals, either. Hmmmm....
Roger @ Jan 15th 2008 4:25PM
So, we have HD content available only via Apple TV...nice...thanks a lot. :(
The new notebook is sealed like an iPod so have fun with that battery.
I was pretty happy with the keynote...you know...until we got the full details.
What a disappointment.
Daniel @ Jan 15th 2008 4:31PM
DL Link? The version im getting from apples's website is telling me to download the 64 bit installer because the 7.6 I have is designed for 32-bit windows...
Where?? download it from where?? ARRGGHHH!!
Daniel @ Jan 15th 2008 4:35PM

Daniel @ Jan 15th 2008 5:13PM
oops have to do it with ie64 my bad :p
eladnova @ Jan 16th 2008 6:33AM
Daniel - I had same probs. Turns out you need to download iTunes with IE and not fireworks. You'll then be prompted for to download iTunes64Setup.exe
Had to uninstall the prev version of iTunes first.
Albert @ Feb 13th 2008 3:43AM
can somebody please upload the 64-bit version installer? I have Win XP 64-bit and it links me to the 32-bit edition. I know Apple doesn't support it, but I know several people who have installed it and it works fine.
Greg @ Jan 15th 2008 4:36PM
Movie rentals is a great idea. There are nights where a group of friends can't find a movie, so we settle on something else. Now, any time, I can just rent it for the night.
Awesome.
Roger @ Jan 15th 2008 4:44PM
I hope you are only wanting the SD rentals and not the HD. You'll be forced to purchase the Apple TV if you want HD rentals.
Greg @ Jan 15th 2008 9:57PM
I don't have an hd tv in my room so... no. SD's just fine
df @ Jan 15th 2008 4:41PM
Vista 64 iPhone 1.1.3 all working. A great day.
Randavance @ Jan 15th 2008 4:43PM
Dear iTunes,
How about Linux?
Roger @ Jan 15th 2008 4:45PM
Exactly...we are shunned by the Mac people. Which is why I've gone the Rockbox route.
Randavance @ Jan 15th 2008 5:07PM
I run rockbox on my iaudio, but I also own an ipod touch and gtkpod is problematic. Sigh.
AJ @ Jan 15th 2008 5:02PM
I can't even get it to connect to the iTunes store....interesting...
