So while the
iPhone and
Apple TV got shiny new firmware updates and new features for free today, iPod touch owners will have to
lay out $20 to get Mail, Weather, Stocks, Notes, and Maps -- five apps the iPhone's had since day one. That seems like a raw deal to us -- but then again, we're up to our necks in handheld devices that can check email and take notes. So what's it going to be, iPod touch owners -- will you be laying down a Jackson or what?
Are you shelling out to update your iPod touch?| Yes! How else will I know what the weather's like? | 8203 (19.5%) |

| Hell no -- and I'm pissed that the iPhone and Apple TV got free updates today and the touch didn't. | 15401 (36.6%) |
|---|
| Dude, it's called jailbreaking. Have you heard of it? | 12509 (29.7%) |
|---|
| Who cares? For $20 I can totally get a new Zune tattoo. | 5987 (14.2%) |

A fool and his money are soon parted.
They can try and justify it any way they like its a simple cash grab.
If they want to cry its a forced requirement due to accounting practices then justify why its $20 and not $3 like the 802.11n accounting issue they had last year.
With all new Touches sold after today including the same software for free Apple is spitting on all the loyal customers who were early adopters of the device. This is going to set a bad precedent for how they allow new applications on the iPod Touch platform. With the ability for 3rd party developers to add their own programs to the Touch next month its only a matter of time Apple asks us to cough up more cash for the privilege of letting us use other people's software.
I had never thought about jailbreaking mine until yesterday. Now I have no qualms of hack the OS to circumvent Apple's greed.

You can get the update on bittorent now!!!
HELL to the NO!
For those of you are unsure if the ones being sold in the stores like Best Buy are in fact the "first generation" without the new apps or the "revised" version, one way is to look at the part number on the back of the box.
8GB Version (1st Generation) #MA623LL/A
8GB Version (Revised Version) #MA623LL/B
16GB Version (1st Generation) #MA627LL/A
16GB Version (Revised Version) #MA627LL/B
As you can see the only difference is that the last letter has changed from an "A" to a "B". I am fairly positive that Apple will also have a new musical artist featured on the box.
Also, if you have purchased your IPOD in the past 30 days (longer if you bought at Costco) simply return it to the store you bought if from with your receipt, get your money back, and then re-buy the new version and you will then have the new version and won't have to worry about paying the $20 fee (it also has been reported by more than one person that the download has given people problems). Retailers usually have a 30 day return policy, simply take it back and get the new version.
What the Flipping Fuck? I already spent $400+tax for the damn iPod touch (which i think is great but also feeling shitty for coughing up so much for) Then i spent the extra $34.95 on an incase leather skin (which took fucking weeks to finally have shipments in black at both the SoHo and 5th Ave store. And was at the time the only iPod Touch case out at the time and carried by apple)
And now another $20 bucks for the apps... which i don't really need anyway. But then to me it doesn't make sense, the devs made it for the iphone and the touch is nearly identical so it doesn't take any extra effort or special attention to get it work for the touch.
Add to the fact that the only major thing that has really changed is the google maps app. Other than that all 5 apps are free and available on JB'd ipods. So people are essentially just paying $20 bucks for google maps.
Under no circumstances Worth it, or Justified. As far as i can tell there isn't even an inclusion of an update to firmware 1.1.3 to allow for customization or any of the other stuff.
I returned mine to Best Buy. F em all. COme out with a product how it should be the first time. Jobs is always pullin this crap. Watch the Macbook Air be their downfall! MARK MY WORDS!
$20 for Weather, Stocks, Notes, and Maps...
lets see...
Google can tell me the weather, there is a finance.google.com, and maps.google.com, oh, and docs.google.com (iirc)
so yeah... no, sorry...
you are so right, only thing wrong with it I'd that you need a google account(not hard to set-up I don't think) but don't you think it would be handy to be able to just touch 1 button?(no offensive)
Absolutely NO way will I be paying Apple $20 for a software 'update'. If this is how Apple rewards early adopters of their first generation products then I don't want anything to do with them. What a disgusting display of greed. What a slap in the face to existing customers. New customers beware. Shame on you Apple - if you have any sense you'll rectify this egregious error in judgment, and fast.
Does yahoo mail work on iPod touch in the UK?
I may someday pay $20 for the heck of it when I am less upset. Even though 20 bucks ain't break my bank but the principle is the principle. It just Apple purposely withheld the features from the ipod touch then later call it an "upgrade" to extort customer's money.
Besides the 1.13 firmware even jail you in further to an anemic puddle of applications whereas thousands are available to windows PPC.
Editors should forward this poll to Apple.
(Disclosure: I am Apple stock owner)
For those of you who are outraged over Apples greedy slap in the face to early adopters of first generation products, and there are many of you, let them know. This is not about being cheap, it's about principle - and if Apple customers take it lying down it sets a costly precedent for future updates to this and other Apple products. It is outrageous that those who purchased early have to pay for something that others will get for free from now on. We're not talking about a new piece of hardware - we're talking about a simple download that should be free for anyone who owns an iPod touch.
