i was sitting here for the last half hour, clicking update update update.... now finally a place to download it.

If you update it from a hacked ipod touch, you cannot access any of your apps, they are still there, but there is no way of accessing them.
So far i've found nothing positive except for ripping customers for the apps you have to buy. I've been searching and cannot find a site for the old 1.1.2 firmware to download. hope that helps ya

I was able to update fine on iTunes 7.5, it takes a few minutes to install but after that it works flawlessly.
Same here. Updated with 7.5. Don't update to 7.6 if you value your custom ringtones!

If you put your ringtones on your iphone via Garageband they will still be there
I got it downloaded already and was updating. The update failed and now it told me to restore my iPhone. But iTunes is saying "The iPod software update server could not be contacted.".
So I'm sitting here with a dead iPhone right now.
Oh, to note. My iPhone was not hacked in any fashion (no jailbreak or anything).

Same here. I wouldn't have started this if I knew that the install process itself required Apple's servers. Is this a new step?

iTunes was finally able to connect and the restore worked just fine. My iPhone is now loaded with 1.1.3 goodness!
i updated my phone with updating itunes. So that is faux. The update let me keep the ringtones I added from last update with that trick. All my pictures are there as well. To see lyrics you click on the screen in ipod mode, and right under the time bar will be the lyrics for you to scroll up and down.

Same here. Updated to iTunes 7.6, still getting the "server could not be contacted" message. ugh
Speaking of which, why does Apple make me sign ANOTHER license popup for 7.6? I already agreed to their contract for 7.5! Is it truly necessary to bother everybody with that garbage each time there is an incremental iTunes update?
In addition I also got the "could not contact server" error when I tried to update my iPhone.
The EULA you agreed to applies only to iTunes ver7.5. The new ver7.6 is not covered by the ver7.5 EULA.
@Matt: You should reset your iPod touch 1.1.2 before updating.
Anyone noticed any changes from version 1.1.2 on iPod Touch? A changelog would be much appreciated.
I have iTunes 7.5 because I can't contact the iTunes update server... I'll try the iPhone update off of 7.5
Can I install this without itunes....I am at work and am not allowed to have itunes on my laptop. But don't have the patience to wait until tonight to update.
1.1.3 for the ipod touch is a joke. No new features no nothing.
Nope... nothing new as far as I could tell. But then again, I only had it for like 40 seconds before I pulled out my credit card.
I really like the mail app BTW. It's nice to finally get weather, email and stocks without going to Safari first.
I got the update and it actually went smoother than any update so far BUT this GPS thing i s sucking eggs so far. I am at 75 Rockefeller and it keeps telling me I am on 92nd and 2nd ave. IT'S LYING TO ME!
I'm in the middle of nowhere using my own wifi and it was able to pin me down. Hopefully with the SDK coming soon, we'll actually get a GPS module or something.

thanks Apple for crashing my phone first thing in the morning. assholes.
anyway. brand new PC rig. fully updated XP Pro. went to update the phone. itunes downloaded the update, began the install. backed up my phone. started compiling the package for transfer. BSOD. *me wtf* so i restart my box. in the meantime, my phone has the icons of the plug and arrow going to itunes icon. yeah. that helps. so i open itunes back up, plug in my phone and it's all "iPhone is in recovery mode, you must restore before you can use it with itunes" well no shit. so i go to restore, and then i get "the iphone software update server could not be contacted".
if i lose my contacts or naked pics of that chick i met at the bar last weekend. i'm gonna be pissed.
My experience is that you'll probably lose the pics, but not the contacts.... maybe you can call her to take some more?
Update:
back up and running (backup worked) an hour later. SYNC'd photos+music gone. photos taken on iphone retained. wo0t.
@Eric: You actually don't have to pay for the firmware update 1.1.3 on Touch, but I'm not sure what changes it comes up with.
There are no changes for ipod touch besides the fact that you can BUY apps from apple, if your an early adopter.
so i'm at work not using iTunes; how do I download 1.1.3 to my iPhone. I have the wire and see the link above in this post, but do i have to create a folder first or just plug-in my iPhone in and click the link? A little insight is appreciated as I don't want to f-up this thing, thanks.
I just updated to 1.1.3... and now I'm getting no service in my apartment. The signal got weaker, weaker... then gone. And I live in an urban district of Washington, DC. Anyone else having this issue?
Success! 1.1.3 updated w/o issue using iTunes 7.5, but the phone wouldnt reconnect to iTunes to reactivate after updating. A quick power cycle of the iPhone and it detected in iTunes, activated, and was good to go.
Triangulation in Google Maps pegged me within 1/3 of a city block in the SOMA area (one block from Moscone West).
So far, I've added a couple shortcuts to NextBus, Google, and Engadget to my home screen.
Engadget: Please provide a better bookmark icon like Google does! I have not been able to get a decent looking icon for my Engadget bookmark other than the image of Dead Gadgie (http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/dead-gadgie.jpg).
Maybe I havent paid attention enough but do you know if iTunes is now compatible with Vista 64-bit? I have the iPhone and but cant sync it to my computer due to that issue.

but I think that new applications a part, we should pay even for shacking icons, home screen, etc... :S
So unfair... I prefer to keep my 1.1.2 until a new jailbreak is released.

iTunes downloaded and updated (install slower than I remember previously).
Touch upgrade took about 40 mins to download the 165mb update, very very slow.
Install worked fine.
Liking the new apps, now if they could add an upgrade for GPRS to the Touch that would be nice ;-)
I, too, have downloaded the update for iPhone and I'm feeling silly because I don't know what to do with it. I double click it and it makes iTunes the active window but nothing else happens. What am I missing?
just did my Ipod Touch upgrade to 1.1.3 via ispw file, firmware update for free but the apps are what cost $20 on iTunes..
I just updated mine and it needed to reactivate my iPhone with AT&T, requiring that I enter a bunch of account information. I've never had to do that with a firmware upgrade before. Did anyone else see this?

I updated my itunes, updated and then upgraded with no hitch first attempt, everything works perfectly. I love the apps, love having mail especially. Just wish I didnt have to pay for them.
I guess no one knows how to install 1.1.3 from the link above, oh well, will have to do it tonight at home thru iTunes. Great coverage of Macworld, though for less advanced users a bit more explanation on how to install the 1.1.3 download would have been nice.
Actually mine worked just fine under 7.5 (OS X) and I've got wiggly icons out the yin yang!!!!
Downloading now, taking a helluva long time though, suppose a few million people trying to get it slows things down a bit.
Just updated my clean ipod touch to 1.1.3. No wiggly icons and a strange looking "finder" bar which looks like the iphone one, with the grey grid behind.
Am i right by saying that the ipod update does absolutely nothing?

Updating my iTunes is annoying. It never saves my preferences when it's upgraded. I have to reselect where I want to save my music every time. Why can't they fix this?
The ipod update sucks. So far all i've noticed is a horrible grey dock (i much preferred the old one), Safari's bookmark icon was moved, and the YouTube app was moved to the far righ.
In Windows, Shift + Click on the Check for Update button in iTunes to select the file. In Mac, Option + Click does the same. I don't believe you can update without iTunes, but if you are having problems with the download through iTunes then the files above should do the trick (did for me)!

Hey, downloaded that update and got a folder with 3dmg files, a folder called firmware and two other files [restore.plist & kernelcache.release.s5l8900xrb]....
What do i do with these? Please help guys really want this update :( Cheers
1. Go back to the trash and fish out the .zip file. Ignore the folder with all the dmg stuff in it.
2. Drag .zip file out of trash and onto desktop.
3. Open iTunes right click [or ctrl + click for mac] on the Update Software button on the iPhone/iPod Summary page.
4. Select the .zip file from the finder and 'boom' let it do its thang.
OFFICIAL: YOU CANT DOWNGRADE THE TOUCH TO 1.1.1 after its been upgraded to 1.1.3
I also tried restoring to 1.1.3 and it gives me an error. Now im stuck in restore mode... Thanks alot apple, worst day ever
jesus what a disaster. i'm on a XP laptop, using ituens 7.5. no, i did not read this post first. so i dled the update, and my phone bricked and is in recovery mode. I was also trying to dl/install itunes 7.6 at the same time, and i use that apple automatic software updater, so it was updating my safari beta, too. i pressed cancel when it looked like it was done with itunes and had moved onto safari, as i just wanted to get itunes 7.6 up, and just *see* if it would maybe let me connect and would be alright without pressing restore. but apparently there "are files missing from itunes and it cannot run properly." ahhh, so now i've got to reinstall itunes, then deal with the bricked phone situation, all the while i'm rusing out the door right now to class, and was supposed to have dinner with someone after.

I tried updating my iphone on my piece of crap xp & in the midst of it finsihing the installation I get the message "UNKOWN ERROR: could not update iPhone" wtf?? I have updated to iTunes 7.6 as as well..

Try again. I updated a few of my friends iPhones off my Powerbook and the first time I did the update it gave me the same error - however after I tried a 2nd time - it worked like a charm.
So where do we go to get our new apps?

C'mon jailbreak. $20 for apps I already loaded on 1.1.1 is ridiculous. I really want to rent some movies though.

Avoid this update like the plague. Wiped everything. (no hacks, clean phone). I'm quite angry.
you get the mail app stock app and notes and weather by jailbreaking your ipod im guessing the only reason they provided the update was to get u to pay to do the things an already jailbroken ipod can do. This also helps apple by making it harder for people to jailbreak their ipods, because as of now a jailbreak for firmware 1.1.3 doesn't exist. btw those new macbook air are pretty kick ass :)
Apple has to milk the world dry with the EDGEtastic iPhone first. They they will release the 3G version. But not when the world is ready. When Apple is ready. Either that or that can't figure
Hey i have a jailbroken ipod touch and i already have mail, maps, ad weather. do you think if i download 1.1.3 my ipod will get screwed up at all?

I am in a country where it is difficult for me to get hold of a credit card let alone paying for this update for ipod touch.
Really sucks to have paid 600 bucks and then having to pay more for some software updates which.

Well, you don't need 7.6 as far as users on Windows XP/Vista. However, the 'Apple Mobile Device' service crashed during the update, causing me to restore it completely.
In the end, it updated to 1.1.3.
hey guys, I updated my iPod touch to 1.1.3 using the itunes 7.3 or something like that. The only thing that changed was the theme of the icon bar at the bottom! Will it be ok if I upgrade to iTunes 1.7?or will I need to restore my iPod anyway?how can I fix this problem without restoring my iPod? I really want to try the mail and the other apps! Please help
