Enjoy this special moment that can only occur between one happy iPhone user and their consenting device. You'll get to witness the miracle of icon rearranging, the joy of Google Maps location finding, and the unending pleasure of homescreen Safari bookmarks. We didn't grab the multiple SMS recipient function on film, but we assure you it's exactly like it should have been to begin with.

Awesome video guys, but have you found out why they are charging for this update for the iPod Touch?
Kinda a kick where it hurts for everyone who bought a Touch for christmas...
CraigJ @ Jan 15th 2008 5:13PM
Pretty iPod touch is not based on subscription revenue is why...
http://biz.yahoo.com/e/070510/aapl10-q.html
Relevant paragraph:
In March 2007, the Company began shipping Apple TV and expects to begin shipping the iPhone in late June 2007. For Apple TV and the iPhone, the Company plans to provide future unspecified features and additional software products free of charge to customers. Accordingly, the sale of the Apple TV and the iPhone handset are accounted for under subscription accounting in accordance with Statement of Position ("SOP") No. 97-2. As such, the Company defers the associated revenue and cost of goods sold at the time of sale, which will then be recognized on a straight-line basis over the currently estimated 24 month economic life of these products. Costs incurred by the Company for engineering, sales, and marketing will continue to be expensed as incurred.
CraigJ @ Jan 15th 2008 5:14PM
Pretty sure, I meant to say. Damn fat fingers
friko @ Jan 15th 2008 5:34PM
Bullshit. My PS3 is not under subscription revenue and I, for example, got DivX support and a RSS ticker in a update weeks ago. I will surely get for free the 1.1 Profile update too.
CraigJ @ Jan 15th 2008 5:44PM
Well, you'd need to talk to Oppenheimer about that, but Apple has been very, very careful since the whole options backdating thing. BTW, Palm does the same thing: http://www.palm.com/us/software/esu/
$20 seems a bit much to me, but on the other hand that is only $4 per app... Easy solution for everyone: next time, get a Zune if it pisses you off that much.
Totalfixation @ Jan 15th 2008 6:01PM
@friko
Your PS3 may not be under subscription service, but you have to think what else are they making money from.....................? GAMES!!!!
friko @ Jan 15th 2008 6:14PM
And Apple make money from songs in iTunes. That has nothing to do with subscription services.
CraigJ @ Jan 15th 2008 6:25PM
subscription revenue model has nothing to do with subscription services.
umm....hello??? @ Jan 15th 2008 7:17PM
@friko
last time I checked, SONY made the PS3, not Apple.
@Totalfixation
what PS3 games?? =) (ps- I own a 60gig PS3 and only have 3 ps3 games thus far--although that should change this summer with MGS4 and LittleBigPlanet).
Snooze @ Jan 15th 2008 5:05PM
I guess the firmware servers are up again, gg Apple.
muppetman2000 @ Jan 15th 2008 5:09PM
Mine wont work....... i always get bad reception in my house so mabye its that.
ducatidoc @ Jan 15th 2008 5:23PM
mine put me in denver, co for the first hour (i am in ann arbor, mi).
superdoppler @ Jan 15th 2008 5:08PM
For some reason Google Maps keeps thinking I am in California even though I'm in Florida. Not sure what's up with that.
siberdog @ Jan 15th 2008 6:28PM
Are you using an iPhone or iPod? The iPod uses Skyhook only and depends on having your wi-fi access point mapped.
Carbonize @ Jan 15th 2008 5:08PM
Wow what's that now? Twenty apple stories in the last few hours? Can't you just make a post every hour or so condensing down everything you have got to say about a new product since the last post?
Constable Odo @ Jan 15th 2008 6:09PM
Heck no. Since you're so insistent to look at each insignificant Apple article, it's much more fun to rub Apple fan dreck into your face with continuous barrages.
I guess what's so different about my computer is that I can skip over any article that isn't worth reading. For instance, all Zune and Vista articles (unless I just want a long, hard laugh).
Carbonize @ Jan 15th 2008 6:15PM
I don't read each article. My point is that you have to scan over the nine Apple entries on each page to find the one non Apple entry.
Maybe they could tag each blog entry somehow with a keyword so Ad-Block could hide posts you don't like.
And at least I offered an intelligent solution rather than the usual rubbish people post in this situation.
Senor_Tom @ Jan 15th 2008 7:37PM
you may not have realised, but it is MACWORLD...so you know you expect apple news....
Carbonize @ Jan 15th 2008 7:42PM
Yes but like with every Apple story Engadget does it to death. I mean I'm all for hearing about the MacBook Air and would even like one (will settle for just a Macook first). But the amount of coverage given to it is ridiculous. And the stupid pol on "Did you pre-order a MacBook Air". Then one post on you need the RJ-45 dongle and another on the DVI/VGA dongles 1 minute apart by the same blogger.
All I am saying is some of it is unnecessary and some of it could easily be condensed into a single post as opposed to two or three.
holycow @ Jan 15th 2008 5:08PM
had this version of Google Maps when it just came out! (on Nokia e61i).. nothing new.. really
Scott @ Jan 15th 2008 6:59PM
What exactly is your point? Do you think a 3G iphone won't be news simply because there are other phones that have 3G now?
holycow @ Jan 15th 2008 10:21PM
My point was that this feature doesnt need to be hyped up that much. I mean not like its an exclusive to the iPhone.
oZone @ Jan 15th 2008 5:08PM
Does anyone else think Apple kind of held back on the iPhone/iPod touch related announcement at Macworld? Just a slight mention of the SDK? That's pretty lame... They should build some excitement about it.
DaMaDo @ Jan 15th 2008 5:09PM
I like the location finder thing...found me in 2 seconds. I like that I can use it indoors too which is harder with GPS.
erhan @ Jan 15th 2008 10:57PM
You need to know where you are when your indoors?
Do you get kidnapped and go "hmmm let me see where I'm at"
I think you want to revise it to say, "I like to have it default at my location via wifi than gps because gps cannot get a great signal indoors."
It makes it sound like your lost in your own home. :)
Clumsy @ Jan 15th 2008 5:18PM
Do I have to be connected Wi-fi/Edge so that Google could find me? If yes, it's pretty useless IMO.
holycow @ Jan 15th 2008 5:21PM
Yes you do!
Andrew @ Jan 15th 2008 5:26PM
How else would you connect to google so that google can tell you where you are? Wifi and edge are the only ways....unless you have it hacked under tmobile.
Scott @ Jan 15th 2008 7:07PM
That's like saying "Do I need to have my GPS unit synchronize with a satellite first before I can use it? If yes, that's pretty useless IMO."
Or did you think both GPS and cell phone triangulation worked on magic?
Ben @ Jan 15th 2008 5:22PM
Between this and gmail imap support I am a very happy camper.
Hecktic @ Jan 15th 2008 5:33PM
sadly to say the iphone is not going see any love from apple, ever... they are not going to use any of their resourses to make anything new for the iphone other than more stability and revenue oriented updates. Thats where the SDK plays in, its like america out sourcing their jobs to india, cheaper, more efficient and of course profit. let other peolpe make great software for your product, put it up on itunes, charge a nice buck for it, and rack in the money and wipe off their all ready clean hands of doing notting. thats why i fully support the 3rd party dev scene. for every app i use on my iphone, the developer gets a 1$ from me, it dont hurt my wallet and if all the other greedy iphone users would do the same we would even have a more flourishing 3rd party development. all in all i have 9 apps on the iphone which are a must, thats 9 bucks guys. beats the 20 to give apple for their bullshit update to the touch. i wanna hear some responses on this
Reid @ Jan 15th 2008 5:42PM
Christ. Provide software and people bitch about 3rd party support. Announce an up-and-coming SDK, and people bitch that Apple will never devote any resources to the iPhone ever again.
Can't win with some people.
Joseph Currin @ Jan 15th 2008 5:36PM
DO NOT UPGRADE!!!!! IT WILL SCRAMBLE YOUR TEXT MESSAGE CONVERSATIONS! Apple does not have a fix for it at this time
Simon @ Jan 15th 2008 5:36PM
Why does everyone say that the iPod Touch users should pay for updates because they don't pay a monthly subscription fee?
Newsflash! iPod Touch users DON'T pay a monthly fee, so they DON'T get cellphone features such as EDGE, SMS, and calls.
iPod Touch != iPhone
Apple is just screwing us over.
CraigJ @ Jan 15th 2008 5:37PM
I totally dig my iPhone, and this update is very nice, however, I still want:
Copy/Paste
ability to add multiple photos to a single e-mail.
ability to rotate photos (not by rotating the iPhone)
support for bluetooth headphones
general use of the bluetooth port for other stuff, like connecting up to my car stereo...
and lastly, the ability to see the wi-fi keys you are typing in.
Hecktic @ Jan 15th 2008 5:46PM
2 out of the 6 things can already be done,
Copy/Paste
ability to add multiple photos to a single e-mail. ---- check use send pics
ability to rotate photos (not by rotating the iPhone)-- check use Photo board
support for bluetooth headphones
general use of the bluetooth port for other stuff, like connecting up to my car stereo...
and lastly, the ability to see the wi-fi keys you are typing in.
Matthew OHalloran @ Jan 15th 2008 5:49PM
Thanks for the video, but next time...lose the volume!
I have a headache from all that nerd chatter :P
CraigJ @ Jan 15th 2008 5:54PM
ability to add multiple photos to a single e-mail. ---- check use send pics

What?
Hecktic @ Jan 15th 2008 6:24PM
ok never mind im assuming that you never had your phone jailbroken and now you updated to a useless 1.1.3 firmware. in which you now totaly lost total hope of ever enjoing your iphone like the rest of us, sorry mate :(
Do Giovanni @ Jan 15th 2008 5:59PM
Not working on the ipod touch...
Nothing as shown in ur video shows up, care to give us a clue?
gibbofbi @ Jan 15th 2008 5:45PM
How are there games on the iPhone??? iTunes says the games are not compatible with the iPhone. Is this a jailbroken phone???
Hecktic @ Jan 15th 2008 5:50PM
you need to watch the keynote again, or any video of the leaked 1.1.3 firmware. nuff said
cowfo @ Jan 15th 2008 5:48PM
I upgraded today then went to the gym as usual with my Motorola S9 stereo bluetooth headphones. It turns out that the 1.1.3 update partially eliminated the ability to use the audio selection in voicemail. As soon as the screen goes black or you change to your ipod, the sound stops. You can now only listen to your ipod over bluetooth if you're on the voicemail screen.
I've just about had it with this thing.
Scott @ Jan 15th 2008 7:07PM
The iPhone doesn't support A2DP. How did you *ever* get it to work with an A2DP headset in the first place?!
cowfo @ Jan 15th 2008 8:13PM
Turn on and pair your A2DP headset
Go to Voicemail page
Tap "Audio" button on upper right
Select your A2DP headset
Enjoy
It's in mono but I like to listen to talk radio podcasts at the gym so it doesn't matter.
Hecktic @ Jan 15th 2008 5:55PM
@ Reid
because they wont, plain an simple just by todays keynote, the iphone seen more support from 3rd party dev in the first week then from apple in the 200 days it was out. other than OS updates which im thankfull for after they where jailbroken
Michael @ Jan 15th 2008 5:55PM
With the Google location feature, I found that if I press it once, it gives me an approximate location, but if I press it again, it's much more exact. I have both EDGE and WiFi on, so is it possible that it's using the WiFi the second time I press it. Anyone else see this?
Dr Chaos @ Jan 15th 2008 6:17PM
Were those icons trembling when the delete menu came up? lol thats hilarious! I hate all the pompous connotation associated with mac, but wow its the little things that make me like them. Although I can't justify spending 400$ for 16 gigs of storage, ssd, flash or not
bruceyeah @ Jan 15th 2008 10:44PM
Any sign of disk mode for the this firmware release??
michael @ Jan 15th 2008 10:57PM
Speaking of maps, does the iPhone do Live Maps very well? Google Maps is cool an all, but I still prefer Live Maps when I'm on a computer, and I'm wondering how it is on an iPhone.
Anybody knows if it renders well?
