Elgato delivers EyeTV 3: new UI, smart guides, and network sharing
For those who didn't realize that Macworld actually does keep on spinnin' once Mr. Jobs darts back to Cupertino, here's a little more proof. Elgato Systems is using the remaining spotlight in San Francisco to showcase its latest iteration of EyeTV, and we must say, we're digging the additions. Aside from the completely new user interface tweaked to match Leopard, users of EyeTV 3 will also notice an "extended program guide featuring intelligent searching and recording functionality," enhanced network sharing, Smart Playlists, bolstered AppleScript support and an integrated video editor. If that rundown has you overcome with the itch to upgrade, you can do so for $39.95 (or free for users of EyeTV 2 who obtained their license after December 1, 2007), and if you're looking to start fresh, you can snag the software right now for $79.95.

Does anyone know the best way to do IR blaster with this stuff? I would love to kick an old MCE box to the curb if I could figure out how to change channels on a cable box.

They need to do an update so it will work with Fios. I hate not being able to control the stations on my MBP...
JMMGoalster @ Jan 16th 2008 11:42PM
ok, cmon now. Microsoft just released the .net source code and its not even on here? Have some respect for us developers!
Andrew @ Jan 16th 2008 11:48PM
its Engadget not Endeveloper
John @ Jan 17th 2008 12:03AM
releasing .net sourcecode is a huge thing for developers and by extension people who use stuff written by developers, i.e. all software.

What is the best hardware to use with this software that supports high definition?
John @ Jan 17th 2008 12:04AM
Can you use this to stream to a PS3? I'm considering setting up a nice integrated rig and this looks pretty neat.
Galley @ Jan 17th 2008 9:26AM
Yes, you should be able to use Nullriver's MediaLink.

Anyone know if they've finally partnered with someone so that Canadian users can actually download a Guide? I purchased the product totally unaware of this and was so disappointed as it's pretty hard to schedule recordings without a guide. There was a great hack/workaround until Zapt2It cut it's free service (and you can't pay for it even it you wanted to which makes it that much worse). As someone living in Canada, unless this is fixed I say stay away from Elgato, those south of the border, enjoy! (Enjoy your iTunes movies too ya bastards!)
bobartig @ Jan 18th 2008 1:15PM
Wow. Um, you apparently weren't paying attention. Zap2It killed their EPG service BECAUSE of the workaround/hacks people were using to integrate free EPG. That wasn't supposed to be free. They charged for it, and many people like yourself didn't pay for it.
Yes, they are partly to blame for making their guide so hackable, but now everyone is paying the price. You helped kill one of the only viable epg providers in Canada, so you don't get to complain.

They've listed Cover flow and list support as new, but haven't mentioned whether quick look works, currently for me it just shows a pic from the first frame, which tells you nothing if it's a black screen. Even if not that simultaneous cover flow & list with description looks interesting.

Yes it will encode H264 and automatically import into iTunes. However, you need a UPnP server to stream to the PS3, which elGato also makes called eyeConnect. Nullriver also makes a product called Media Connect, they are the same people who made Connect360 and Installer.app for the iPhone. Very good stuff. The other problem you will run into is the extremely slow encoding unless you have some monster machine, ie Quad Core Mac Pro. I have a brand new iMac with 2 gig of ram and it still takes like an hour. Elgato has a product called the turbo.264 that speeds ups this product for less than $100. No I'm not an Elgato sales rep but I've looked into all of this and actually use EyeTV and the HD HomeRun and chose them because while other products may work Elgato focuses only on the Mac and with any other product your going to be a second class citizen.

CANADIANS NOT SUPPORTED!
Any Canadian wishing to buy an Elgato product should be aware that EYETV does NOT support scheduling information in Canada. While Elgato claims they have been "working on it" no solution has been offered. This situation has been going on for YEARS. Even with the latest release of EyeTV 3, there is still no Canadian schedule integration.
Not having the scheduling function support severely cripples the otherwise wonderful software that this company has built.
Canadians should do a little research and consult the Elgato discussion forums to read threads on this subject and give Elgato some much needed feedback.

...D: I really should have kept my eyeTV 2 serial number...
peterjcat @ Jan 17th 2008 5:23PM
If you buy the upgrade you get a new serial number. As long as you have a registered installed copy of EyeTV 2 you can install the upgrade over that and everything's peachy.
