It's here. Dell's 24-inch, Ultrasharp
2408WFP monitor is up and dancing on Dell's US page. $748 buys into a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution, 178-degree viewing angle, 1,300:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 6-ms response, and 102% color gamut. Standard stuff until you get to the vast suite of jacks: HDMI, 2x DVI, DisplayPort, VGA, Composite, S-Video, Component, a single USB upstream, and 2x USB downstream. Just another reason why Round Rock, Tejas is the world's focal point for computer monitors. Who'd have thunk?
[Thanks, Brad]

I was hoping the 24" Refresh would've adopted the design of the new 30" 3008.
Sigh... secretly I weep tears of pain.
Dan Z @ Jan 17th 2008 1:55AM
I do like this design though. I have the 2007 WFP monitor, and it looks quite sharp
CyberGhost @ Jan 17th 2008 1:31PM
I'm glad it didn't, I didn't like the new design.
E71 @ Jan 17th 2008 8:16AM
Hit 4ms or lower response already.
E71 @ Jan 17th 2008 7:31PM
Why low ranked? Do you p*ssies wanna hold technology back like the HD-DVD group does? :p
ike @ Jan 17th 2008 1:25AM
I'm hoping for this, but with LED backlighting.
2Shea @ Jan 17th 2008 1:26AM
I'll stick w/ my 2407.
Matt @ Jan 17th 2008 1:27AM
Heh, I already own a few of the 2407's and I don't really mind the design, personally I prefer it over the 3008 design.
Anyway, the exciting news is the 102% NTSC color gamut, and 1080p component input (finally).
PS: Engadget, the 2408 actually has 4 USB ports, two on the bottom and two on the side next to the card reader.
Zrataza @ Jan 17th 2008 1:46AM
I think Dell is confused...they're thinking, "it may be a monitor but with TV inputs...AHA!" That makes as much sense as Bush getting re-elected in 2004...lol
Firebird @ Jan 17th 2008 2:02AM
Really? Because I kinda like the idea of having all those input options. I don't own a television, partly because I'm currently in college and partly because I really couldn't give less of a damn about 98% of what is on tv these days. That said I do like video game consoles, though I don't have one of those either (last one was a sega genesis, and it got stolen, go figure). But I couldn't really get one and use it too well if I wanted to, the whole not having a television and only having a laptop thing hinders my display options a bit. I think it would be nice to have a monitor with all sorts of inputs so I could plug a console or anything else into it. I'm sure there is plenty of video equipment you could plug straight into this, especially older stuff, and considering the price of hidef media drives, it could even be nice to plug a normal Blu-Ray player into something like that. I don't think the inclusion of options that Joe PC User might not have a use for is anywhere nearly as brain dead of a desecion as the re-election of everyone's favorite least-favorite president was.
Matt @ Jan 17th 2008 3:09AM
Why not have the inputs? They don't really make the monitor all that much more expensive considering it's only real competitors from Samsung, NEC, and Apple all have about the same price and lack the inputs.
I have an Xbox 360 hooked up to a 2407 right now.
It's actually one of the best features of the 240x series.
chris @ Jan 17th 2008 3:46AM
Matt, how? 2407 doesn't have HDMI
Matt @ Jan 17th 2008 1:43PM
There are two ways to hook up a 360 to a 2407, over HDMI -> DVI, or via component.
Zrataza @ Jan 17th 2008 2:43PM
my friend...i really highly doubt the use of such a small TV...I would rather go with a 40" Samsung TV that has better contrast ratio and all the inputs that this "Monitor" has...since it has so many ports this should be compared to the Samsung TV line which has PC inputs...and I own one of the newest one of these TV's (4071F) and I would say that that is a better way to go than a tiny "Monitor" TV...but this is my opinion...
moe @ Jan 17th 2008 1:48AM
hey at least its still a pva! was worried with the recent samsung release being TN.

Not too bad for $699 (3yr warranty)
Mikey @ Jan 17th 2008 2:35AM
I'm wondering... where the heck is Tejas at? is that like... in Mexico or something?
Matt @ Jan 17th 2008 3:50AM
Texas but with Spanish spelling.
Eh @ Jan 17th 2008 2:43AM
At that price it must not be TN, thank god. TN is garbage. Terrible terrible garbage. Actually its worse than garbage, its like garbage poop. TN should be illegal.
4eyes @ Jan 17th 2008 3:01AM
Perfect. Release a new 240_ model before fixing the terrible ghosting issues with the 2407-HC ones. i had three with the same issue and kind of just settled on turning the gain down as a workaround on my latest one.
Take a look here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1mN6lYAJzE&feature=related
and on the dellcommunity forums, 74 pages and counting:
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&thread.id=81254&view=by_date_ascending&page=74
Wait for the reviews before getting this.
Steve A. @ Jan 17th 2008 10:38AM
I have two of these 'HC' monitors, and upgraded from the first 2408's. One of my HC monitors too was plagued by this ghosting issue, but it's fairly easy to fix. I had color calibrated the monitors and turned up the red on one of them to 98%. By turning the red down to 96% (to match the settings of my second monitor), all my ghosting issues were gone. From what I've found, if you jack up all the brightness, contrast & color settings to max, then yes, you will have ghosting. Of course at those settings, everything else looks like crap too.
My main problem with the latest generation in design is that their stands lost about 3 inches in max height. I now have to put boxes under my monitors to keep them at eye level.
hoohoo @ Jan 17th 2008 3:14AM
glad they kept the same design. now i can get a clone of my 2407 with upgraded features. dual here i come.
SimbaDogg @ Jan 17th 2008 3:18AM
First company to make a monitor w/ any combination of 3 digital inputs gets my money...2 hdmi 1 dvi, 2 dvi 1 hdmi w/e
PeterF @ Jan 17th 2008 8:07AM
This one here has 4 digital inputs...
SimbaDogg @ Jan 17th 2008 12:13PM
yeup....and i dont need display port, or USB, or s video, or component...that instantly makes my magic 400 dollar monitor jump up to 750. I like 400 more than 750.
Sebastien @ Jan 17th 2008 3:38AM
Any chance that Dell add a webcam at some point ? It would be a killer screen
Tom @ Jan 17th 2008 5:31AM
Er...with component or VGA?
chris @ Jan 17th 2008 4:41PM
Well yeah but that's kinda a waste, thus the point of getting the 2408
Nacio @ Jan 17th 2008 4:02AM
You do understand that this is a high quality monitor, and depending on what your doing with it you will most likely ghost. TN panels (CHEAP, NO GHOST FAST MS)
John Shaver @ Jan 17th 2008 4:02AM
This is pretty much the BenQ FP241W which came out over a year ago...Except the BenQ is brighter, has slightly lower contrast, and no displayport, and only 1 dvi. Basically BenQ did it first...way first, and Dell is doing it barely better on paper at least. With panel choices by the manufacturers, my vote would still be for the BenQ, it's the most beautiful monitor I've ever seen.
wickedpheonix @ Jan 17th 2008 6:28AM
Don't forget that it's like, $100 cheaper off newegg?
Gero @ Jan 17th 2008 4:03AM
I want this baby:)
Kristofer Kiik @ Jan 17th 2008 4:13AM
102% color gamut? How would that work? Does it show infrared?
Eh @ Jan 17th 2008 4:41AM
It shows both purple AND violet.
Nawaz @ Jan 17th 2008 9:13AM
I think 120% means it can show more than the required number of colours in the NTSC Gamut Color standard or something.
Basically 100% color gamut means you can show all the colours in that standard, 120% means you can display 20% more colours than that standard.
Steve A. @ Jan 17th 2008 10:55AM
The standard rating is with the NTSC color gamut, which is now being surpassed by the latest hardware. The Adobe color gamut (about 50% of all perceptible colors) is quite a bit larger and quickly becoming the standard for many upper-end digital cameras.
Adobe also has the 'Adobe Wide Gamut RGB' color space, this allows for about 78% of all visible colors to be rendered.
Miso @ Jan 17th 2008 7:28AM
So what kind of panel is it?
FXi @ Jan 17th 2008 8:44AM
Nice looking stats anyway. Input lag could still be a hanging issue (forgot what site out there was keeping running measurements on that).
What bothers me is the 400cm/m brightness is very good, but the 30" models can't match this and cost more...it makes the 30's overpriced, imo.
Good monitor to see some testing on.
steedums @ Jan 17th 2008 9:18AM
its 1920x1200, not 1900
Bakari @ Jan 17th 2008 10:14AM
I have the older model and it's the best monitor I've ever bought, hands down. It rocks the apple cinema display in terms of color accuracy and sharpness plus it has more inputs and outputs. I've never had a single ghosting issue with it, nor any other problems. BTW - I know color and good displays, it's my job as a graphic designer to keep my hardware proper. If this one bests the old model in any way possible, it owns almost any other monitor on the market.
umijin @ Jan 17th 2008 11:00AM
Hmmm... no integrated web cam?
I've seen earlier incarnations of this monitor, and they are really nice.
Mickey Jones @ Jan 17th 2008 11:25AM
Break out the coupons!
Lux Magna @ Jan 17th 2008 11:55AM
It's not a TV if you cannot connect an antenna to it. It has no tuner so it is a monitor.
navstar @ Jan 17th 2008 12:47PM
Just short of real 1920x1080 Hi-Def.
Erik @ Jan 17th 2008 2:55PM
What?! Last I checked, 1920x1200 surpasses "real" 1920x1080 HD...
Lux Magna @ Jan 17th 2008 1:06PM
I wonder who actually makes it. Dell subs out most of its components. I am an NEC guy myself. I have loved their monitors for 18 years. My first 15 inch Syncmaster is an awesome display. I still use it for 720P in my office.
Brian @ Jan 17th 2008 2:48PM
Does the card reader do SDHC now? That is the one limitation (well, besides only 1 digital in) of my 2407.
tek @ Jan 17th 2008 3:00PM
What a piece of crap. $700+? Go buy the Acer with gloss screen, the exact same panel, HDMI, and 2ms response time! Oh and did I meniton it's under $500?
Vash63 @ Jan 18th 2008 9:02PM
Um, yeah and it's a TN panel, which means crappy colors, viewing angle and contrast compared to this, which is likely a PVA screen. Might want to learn something about display technologies before recommending **** like that above a real monitor.
