HP's iPaq 210 shakes off numerous delays, finally available
The holdup is still a bit of a mystery, but HP is finally offering up its iPaq 210 PDA for sale. Due to be released in October, a "supply issue" put the handheld on a mysterious hiatus, but no longer. You can snag one of these Windows Mobile 6, 624MHz units for $450.

I don't have a phone..
And that's exactly the point, I don't want to have one... but need the functionality-to-go...
Which functionality, specifically? Like - is it worth $450 to you?
Well, a lot of uses:
Reference programs
Programs that do complex formulas in a breeze
Offline Wikipedia (this has saved me several times when I am on the open field, no internet by any means there, only satellite but that's another story)
Remote terminal - to control robot computers
VNC - to control personal computers
That's aside from the "typical" applications:
PIM
Mail checking
Gaming - there are some killer games for PDA, not only the emulators
Video playing
Music playing (& even composing, though this is very impractical)
Image viewing
Image editing (sometimes it's so useful.. but complex editing, with layers and all, not "cameraphone editor" style)
Document reading
Jealous-friends making
No, it's still not exactly worth the $450, what makes it worth the 450 bucks for me is that it's probably the last non-phone device in history until I make my own..
I swear i mean this serioulsy. Why would anyone buy a PDA?!
Why use a PDA?
Flexibility, is why. Storage and runtime are only limited by your finances with the iPaq 210. The SDIO slot also gives you a whole host of add-in cards for stuff like GPS, ethernet, USB, etc. The bigger screen makes the iPaq useable as a poor man's notebook with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (which is how I use my PDA). I can still tether my Motorola L2 to my PDA and make calls or use the phone as a modem, too.
The big one, for me, is that when I want to go out for the night, I can leave my PDA at home and pop the smaller and cheaper L2 in my pocket. Having everything in once package like the iPhone means that if the phone gets lifted, so does my portable office, which is too risky. There are times where all you need is a phone.
This is aking for at least a gprs connection.
Sort of like what Athena has ...and really I would rather get Athena for that type of functionality.
Strange device...
I used to like my Dell x50 but lack of keyboard and cellular connection led me eventually to start hating it.
This thing for some reason brings memories of pain.
Could you HP people there resurrect the HP Jornada instead?
DarkLightConnection:
You should repair your credit and get a phone. They have prepaid phones now, you can get them at the 7-11 or the wawa's by your house. Or better yet login to your AOL and keyword : STARTAC
C.
Prepaid phones have always existed here in Mexico, I didn't knew they were new in the US of A...
I used to have one, and it was always there collecting dust.. it made me angry that they forced you to buy air time every two months or they would cancel your account and then charge you alot to make a new one.. it had thousands of pesos (hundreds of dollars?) of air time because I never used it.. until I deceided I'd rather not have a phone
Seriously, I don't know how the world will end up with all this phone-crazyness that is slowly invading all the countries.
if this device was cheaper i would buy it, dual card slots for a possibility of 16Gb of Media storage, Wifi and built in mic/speakers for VOIP, WM 6.0 for power users. but it deffinately should support way more memory by now. it's very stylish and powerful
I really need a non-phone pocketpc.
But
The price is far too high. What the.....
...$450 for a PDA? - I want whatever HP is smoking...

$450 for a PDA is really pretty cheap compared to the $3500 that I spend on a new laptop ever 3 years. Wonder how much people spend on cigs and booze in a year?
The reason people have the iPod Touch and like it better is because it has iPod capabilities. Once you get past that, there are many superior devices out there, including this one.
Why I have a PDA ( currently HP hx4700)?
1) You can't draw pictures on crAPPLE devices
2) You can't create 3D models and animations on any smartphones.
3) There is no transciber , which allows you to write quick notes on the fly.
I workaround phoneless on pda by using this pair : PDA - tiny BT capable phone.
However I dissapointed with HP . They offer old model with added memory. They could've done much more then that.
And why they laid off IrD and Spring Backup app on this device?
I ain't gonna buy it, unless there is Linux for it.
Not so Fast!!
HP is back at it again, like back in october when they "released" the 210 only to cancel all their orders. Seems they did not learn their lessons the first time around.
I placed an order this time on the 16th with a shipping date on the 18th, the 17th the shipping change to the 19th, a day later to the 20th and today I got an email from them saying it will be sometime in February. Thanks HP for keeping skepticism alive and well. My order has been canceled and probably will avoid HP until someone explains to them the meaning of customer service, the kind that doesn't hide behind legal disclaimers.
