iPod touch users: if you bought after Jan 1 the new apps are free -- maybe

If you got your touch after January 1st, you should still be within the window of Apple's price protection, meaning Apple's standard policy for this stuff should allow you to update your touch apps and apply for a credit back on the $20 levy. The Apple mothership didn't yet confirm, but multiple customer service agents said those who bought online shouldn't have a problem getting their Jackson back, son (and those who bought in an Apple store should run on over to get a $20 refund). Let us know how it goes for you -- and don't say we didn't warn you, just in case you wind up being stuck with a $20 charge for apps you should never have had to pay for in the first place.
[Thanks, Steve]

Why don't early adopters just Jailbreak their iPods?
I have had maps and mail on my iPod Touch for a few months now. Not to mention all the other apps installer has.
I bought mine a week ago, and they told me no to the price protection :( oh well, the apps were still worth the $20.
Seriously you people are complaining about a really stupid subject. You bought the iPod touch, yes it is expensive, but I am pretty sure $20 is not going to break the bank for you and if it is going to you shouldn't of bought the device in the first place. Yes I know it sucks its not a free upgrade but really it is nothing to loose sleep over. I have to pay the 20 and for the triangulation in Maps, it is money well spent.
Okay Apple, you gotta give up that price tag, and you gotta do it
before already purchasing customers becomes too many, if you don't
want a hell with angry customers.
There is no justification for this not to be free, and you know it.
(Nice job with the Macbook Air)
I have bought ipod touch 8Gig , on 17th of JAN, from Virgin Megastore Paris, FRANCE.
I bought it as a present, so I could not check but I am halfway sure that it does not contain the new set of applications, namely 1.3 Software update.
Any suggestions of what to do?
Regards.
Fuck you Apple.
Fuck you Steve Jobs.
This is yet the latest in a long line of Apple Ripoffs. The only one buying this bullshit are the mindless cult members. Apple needs to get back to its roots of actually producing great products and giving the customer MORE than they expect, not barely enough to get away with. You don't even get a dock or cables with your iPod anymore. What, they can't spare the $1 to actually make your experience nicer? That's not the Apple I used to now.
can you edit calendar events like on the iphone?
The only reason i havent Jailbroken my ipod was because i knew these apps would eventually make their way to the ipod touch and I've been looking forward to it. However, when they finally release the update they expect us to pay $20...
As many people have said Apple are just punishing early adopters for some unknown reason. It IS a load of BS that the cost of updates are now taken into account for new ipod touches because the cost hasn't increased, and the cost of the iphone also hasn't changed therefore NO changes have been make to the costs of ipods.
Apple are just trying to make a little extra by charging the group of people who bought their ipod touches before the 1st of January as a sort of one off. Its wrong that the new apps should have to be paid for with no changes made for one product and not its twin.
The idea that the apps were released on the iphone for free because it will make apple more money through increased SMS usage and such doesnt hold up because the same apps are given on new ipod touches were there will be no profit made from that.
The only reson apple is charging early adopters is for a one-off pure profit payoff from its most faithful followers. This is a poor move on apples part...
I think they will rectify this soon. However, such is apples influence that this will be quickly forgiven and fogotten by most. Primary buyers should not be penalised by paying extra for an already overpriced product and then have it rubbed in their face by apple supporting later adopters paying the same ammount for the same product.
I don't get the rationale people are using that think these things should not be free. I could understand paying if it was a mobile version of iWork or something. However, these are the kinds of apps that would be free downloads for a desktop. That's why I agree with the majority here.
The iPod is already probably the most expensive item of it's kind in the market. The Touch costs a pretty penny. Offering free mini apps is an excellent way for Apple to justify the cost and ensure that they stay ahead of the curve. I still will not buy one because there's not enough storage or applications. One day I will though assuming that much more storage for the money is on the horizon and most of the apps are FREE!!! Any other scenario is only gonna ensure that I keep my 60 GB iPod video for the next ten years or find a player from another manufacturer that has what I want at the price I want.
Does this actually surprise anyone? When they introduced new features such as the spped control for audio books in the new firmware, which wasn't compatible with the older iPods, all of a sudden, everyone was complaining that their previously perfectly working music player now was of absolutely no value. This has been the same for every iPod bought, apart from a few exceptions. Now, what they do, is say: Instead of having to buy an entirely new iPod to get new features, all you have to do is upgrade it for 20 bucks.
If you bought an iPod touch from the start, but wouldn't have done so if it was 20 bucks more expensive, then maybe you can whine a bit now. But come on, you know what you were buying when you got it. Deal with it.
Haha, guess what?
I went to buy an 8GB iPod touch (the ipod touch without the new software upgrade) yesterday from the local Circuit City for 278$ (they were on sale). In the store, all the Touches was posted for 299$, but I told them they were on sale on circuitcity.com, and they agreed to give me the sale price on it. But later at home, I turn on my iTouch, and its the new one, with the latest software upgrade, John Lennon’s box art, and the new apps! (The software upgrade costs 20$, from apple.com).
I guess they didn’t know that the OLD (Macy Gray, i believe) ipod touches were supposed to be sold at the sale price, and let me have the new one. (I didnt realize that the John Lennon box art were those of the new iPods either.)
Today, I check Circuit City’s website and they have realized the loophole, and thus -
“All Ipods on Sale - *Excludes iPod touch MA623LLB/MA627LLB [The John Lennon ones]”
Moral of the story: Go to a store, ask for the old version of a gadget thats on sale, and hopefully get the new version instead (for the old version’s sale price!)
I love ignorant salespersons.
I bought my 16GB touch from a guy on E-Bay just before Christmas and it had John Lennon on the box but does not have the new apps. I came with 1.1.2.
a little help...how do you know that the ipod touch im buying has the new apps...
is there something in the box?...
thanks...
XP to Vista isn't free ... but XP to XP Service Pack 2/3 what ever IS free. This is an upgrade from 7.2 to 7.3. It should be free.
It worked for me. I bought my iPod Touch on January 2nd at an Apple Store. I went to another Apple Store today on the basis of this post and asked about the update being covered by the price protection. The sales clerk asked for my receipt, then entered the transaction as a return, crediting $21.78 to the card I bought the iPod with. Then I went home and bought the software update for that amount. Easy.
If the WiFi at my apartment was working I could actually use the new apps. But I did write myself a nice Note on it.
mine was bought january 12 and not in an applestore...and its a week 48 ipod touch...
does it have the new applications?
cause if not...im gonna return it and buy a newer one...i have not open the box...
thanks
@fallen1 - I'd call Apple customer service and ask them. If the iPod didn't ship with the new apps, they will probably do for you what they did for me: credit the amount of the update purchase to your credit card so you can buy the update without paying extra.
I guess you could exchange it for a new, physical iPod and get the apps that way, but it seems like a pain.
thanks man...will try that...but it was not bought in an apple store...
i will update if what happens...thanks
For those of you who are outraged over Apples greedy slap in the face to early adopters of first generation products, and there are many of you, let them know. This is not about being cheap, it's about principle - and if Apple customers take it lying down it sets a costly precedent for future updates to this and other Apple products. It is outrageous that those who purchased early have to pay for something that others will get for free from now on. We're not talking about a new piece of hardware - we're talking about a simple download that should be free for anyone who owns an iPod touch.
