XtremeMac's Luna X2 is ready to rule
When it comes to iPod docking alarm clocks, few can face-off with XtremeMac's Luna. Now there's the Luna X2. Normally we'd shred the puffery found in phrases like "world class iPod audio system," "crystal clear display," and a design meant to "complement any room's decor." However, their first-generation Luna was so well received that we tend to believe their boasting. For the moment, anyway. Your $120 (pre-order) gets you a pair of fully customizable, independent alarms, aux-in, AM/FM radio, and same audio performance found in the original Luna. Only now in a newly designed chassis which reflects the new iPod reality: the white iPod is dead.

I preordered it from their site yesterday, got ship notification email today tells me that it will be shipped April 11, 2008. Well technically it's still shipping in 'weeks', 9 weeks.
Well... pre-order dates are now 16-May-2008. Buck up and wait, I guess. What's up with their production? Why is this taking so long and why have they been selling these things (pre-order) so far in advance? Bizarre...
Hey, does the luna x2 charge your ipod too?
I can't wait to have thant nice product, I hope that middle of may is just a bad forecast and it will be closer to the end of april
Sounds like it STILL doesn't do weekend/weekday alarms. :(
You need to pick up the Neverlate Executive Alarm Clock then!
It is an awesome alarm clock. Looks sweet too!
Yeah, but the Neverlate's audio quality sucks. And it has no iPod dock.
Very true.... like they say... you always sacrifice function of some sort.
it does have an audio in port though....and a usb to charge your mp3 player
I was just at MacWorld and saw this in person. It DOES have weekend/weekday alarm settings, along with a whole host of other ways to customize the alarms. Truly amazing.
Does it work with the iPhone? I'd consider it if it does because I too have heard a lot of good things about the first version of this product. It's annoying how so many iPod products don't work with the iPhone so that's why I ask, I see nothing about it in the PR.
engadget can you guys do something comparing ipod dock clocks, maybe by price range?!?!
under 100, 100-200, 200+ is good!!
i dont know which one to get!!!!!!!!!
I am considering getting this...I have gotten two iHome IH8 and both had a remote that wouldn't work.
The last one was horrible! No radio reception and an audible pop before the radio turned on. I tried a couple with the latest firmware and returned both. It did have a lot of great features though. Hopefully this new one will address the problems of the old.
That display beckons back to big LCD clock radio displays of the the 80's doesn't it? And what's with the bar above the 12? I think--at least the display--is a step back from the previous Luna. I hope these renderings are not the final display's actual design.
I totally agree with that. I liked previous Luna's display much more than this one. It was a dot matrix (could display text) and was not backlit.
And what about the great setup menus with this big LCD display?
I'm still searching for the perfect alarm clock matching my criteria: blue display (not backlit, I mean blue text/digits), several alarms, FM radio, iPod dock - and good sounding speakers of course.
The old Luna was very close to this, but... one important thing was missing: the ability to select a playlist for waking up.
If anyone has heard of a device that does all this, I'd be glad to know!
I believe the new IH9 has that ability
According to the manual of the original Luna Dock, you actually can select a playlist to wake you.
The one for the X2 is not online yet, unfortunately.
but does it work for iPhone??? Engadget needs to find an good iPhone docking station out there, all 4 million of us are waiting, cause we can't have the G*d-phone and an alarm on the same bedside table...
This is an unfortunate change. I bought an original Luna, but returned it because there were just a few too many little annoyances, but the industrial design was fantastic. The ability to turn the display brightness down to almost nothing was one of the clock's best features. I was hoping the new one would keep the same case design and fix the glitches with the controls, font, and add a less muddy LCD, but it looks like they decided to turn it into an iHome clone. Anybody know where I can still buy one of the older models? Despite its issues, I think it's still the best iPod clock there has been to date.
whatever you do don't buy the homedics soundspa max. this thing had every function in wanted in one craptastic package for a cool hundy. should have known better. sound was terrible, the alarm beep was a joke, and there is a whining sound coming from the dock and the a/c adapter. trouble is i'm addicted to the rain sound and can't fall asleep without it now.
oops i mean tthat last one as a reply to damien. it had the blue numerals he wanted and a remote and everything. too bad it sucked
I was just at MacWorld and saw this in person. The sound quality was quite good, and the sheer number of options for customizing the alarms is amazing. I'm not familiar with the first-gen Luna so I can't speak to its similarities/differences, but I thought the display was very easy to read, the menus were incredibly easy to navigate, and overall, just a very good product. Can't wait to get one.
