Keepin' it real fake, part CVI: N800 gets Chinafied
$140 can't get you too far in the gadget world these days, but if you're in the market for a totally crap-ass knockoff of Nokia's slim and slender N800 tablet, look no further than this "dual-band PMP cellphone," all hooked up with a QVGA display, dual cameras, Bluetooth, 128MB memory, and enough snazz to blow away the real thing. We're being so sincere right now.

Urg. QVGA? Why?
And why ISN'T that thing running Maemo? The N800's OS is open sourced.
Neat, though. It's also a phone.

A portal reference? lol Great!
nDee @ Jan 18th 2008 8:14AM
It's actually the n800 that can call!
That numpad does look awkward(awful).
Something sounds like those 8600Luna clones...
Cesar Cardoso @ Jan 18th 2008 8:17AM
It would be funny to use it to tether a N800.
Oh, the humanity!

I know China doesn't give a "£%$ about intellectual property rights or copyright law but these folks at Engadget are too quick to denigrate anything coming out of China or Asia that looks remotely familiar for a cheap laugh ...it's bordering on racism. Reply if anyone agrees or if you are getting tired of it. If only the N800 could make calls...that would be something.

A. Lighten up.
B. The N800 _can_ make calls.
poulan @ Jan 18th 2008 9:12AM
C. Sorry Ryan.
D. Thanks Ryan.
tanooki2003 @ Jan 18th 2008 9:45AM
Actually the N800 can only make calls via bluetooth compatible phones or the internet via VoIP. It does not contain a built in GSM modem like the Chinese one does.
Even if this is a copy I applaud that they at least added some cooler bells and whistles to make me actually consider this over Nokia's version.
BrianB @ Jan 18th 2008 11:03AM
Putting a SIM card on an N800 still wouldn't come close to pushing these Chinese cheapos out of the market.

Comeon engadget where is the resurch!
As much as a knockoff as this phone is it does have a pretty damn good feature set, with its main attraction not being it surprising resemblance to its finnish brother but its built in DMB-TV, which, lets be honest, is a sweet feature.
But $140? where did that price come from? Or am i totally wrong here and were looking at the non-dtv version?
oh

It appears a bit of humble pie is in order for me, should have clicked the read link rather than just assuming it was the same phone. Seems the n800 is being knocked off left right and centre!
DestroyerMTL @ Jan 18th 2008 9:47AM
That site is a goldmine of hilarity.
apw76006 @ Jan 18th 2008 9:24AM
This is the first time that my N800 actually booted itself up and flipped off another device.
Magallanes @ Jan 18th 2008 12:09PM
Soon on ebay. :-(
ifenga @ Jan 18th 2008 8:29PM
unfortunately, it only support GSM900/1800MHz, so, if you live in USA, then, can't use it. Maybe need to choose the tirband phone. like this: http://www.totobay.com/triband-phone-c2254.html
Any recommendations ?

Americans forget when they were moving from a agricultural based economy to and industrialised one they to also totally ignored IP and copyright. The only reason the USA decided to enforce IP is because the Europeans started ripping of US ideas as they became industrialised.
doublej @ Jan 19th 2008 7:33AM
It's racism. We know you're trying to please your sponsors but Engadget is getting like Fox News.
Since Apple, Nokia et al get all the stuff MADE in China or other Asian countries with a low cost based- tell me why this one is so much different ??
Seems like people are getting a bit sick of Ryan.
