You've got to hand it to modder Mark Irwin, who did his fellow tinkerers proud by assembling a bunch of found objects into a very handy audio / video dock for the squat new
iPod nano. The project is brilliant in its simplicity: Irwin just carved a nano-sized slot in an old slide magnifier, embedded some discarded speakers, and ended up with a super-handy viewing station on the cheap. Check out the video after the break for inspiration on how you, too, can help put an end to this national
Made for iPod nightmare perpetrated by Griffin, Belkin, Monster, and their
evil cohorts.

Now this is like Apple TV....but useful.
D.L. @ Jan 20th 2008 11:46PM
The ViewMaster version will be way better.

Lol, delightfully low tech. Exactly the same as the magnifiers they used to make for the gameboy.
Lamar Vannoy @ Jan 20th 2008 9:55PM
Not quite exact. This lens flips the image upside down, and creates a greater magnification then the lenses released for the gameboys.
Hung @ Jan 20th 2008 10:20PM
False. The video is re-encoded upside-down and appears right-side up when the nano is upside-down.
peshue, don't let Lamar Vannoy ruin your nostalgia. Pokémon Blue for the win.

THAT'S THE FIRST THING I THOUGHT OF!
i still have one of those, WITH lights in the back so you could play in the dark.
Samius @ May 27th 2008 2:41PM

Casey @ Jan 20th 2008 9:31PM
It's reminds me of "Brazil" and "12 Monkeys."
Balam Herrera @ Jan 20th 2008 10:58PM

abadtooth @ Jan 20th 2008 9:32PM

Shane @ Jan 20th 2008 9:33PM
Is it Gizmondo copycat day today?
derX @ Jan 20th 2008 9:48PM
What? You read Gizmodo? Who the hell reads that crap nonetheless copy it?
Shoo!
Shane @ Jan 20th 2008 9:50PM
Heh. I was bored and Engadget hadn't posted anything new in a while. Otherwise, no, I don't read it.
Joe_Templeman @ Jan 21st 2008 7:15AM
I love how you where so offended that some random person on the internet slighted your reading tastes, you felt the need to reply just to justify your statement...
...be your OWN person
Shane @ Jan 21st 2008 8:42AM
Wow...Tough crowd...
Sam Zebian @ Jan 20th 2008 9:42PM
Better more portable solution- Get a Zune!
ChrisB @ Jan 20th 2008 9:56PM
^doesn't get it.
Sam Zebian @ Jan 20th 2008 9:58PM
I get the concept, it's just impractical in today's world of PMP's.
Ken @ Jan 20th 2008 10:25PM
That's the first time I've seen "Zune" and "solution" in the same sentence.
insertAlias @ Jan 21st 2008 10:27AM
You still don't get it. Its not supposed to be practical. There are several PMPs that would make viewing easier, but this is a neat, low tech, homemade mod. Its just for fun, and has a nostalgic feel.
Paul @ Jan 20th 2008 10:03PM
My only thought is that I would not want to have those magnets (in the speakers) that close to flash memory.
Actually, is flash based memory effected by magnets?
Taylor @ Jan 20th 2008 10:41PM
No. Only HDDs.
Garst @ Jan 20th 2008 10:09PM
Zoolander? It's not a bad movie, but it's not something that I would actually spend money on to own.

Correction: The "Made For iPod" program was an APPLE creation. They forced third-party makers to go along in order to get the "Made For iPod" logo on their products. It is not the fault of "Griffin, Belkin, Monster, and their evil cohorts." It's ALL Apple.
Don't be like Giz. I know you have to report similar stories, but Engadget usually gets the details right. You should make the correction.
ty.cornwall @ Jan 20th 2008 11:07PM
hmmm... personally I would have played the movie Brazil in the demo.
Wwhat @ Jan 21st 2008 4:21AM
Good thinking!
Chris @ Jan 20th 2008 11:30PM
Chances are if gizmodo has it on their page engadget shouldn't want to put it on their site.
Shane @ Jan 21st 2008 8:43AM
And yet they did...Puzzling...
