Apple store down: pink iPod nano and Canadian iPhone rumors swirl

Yup, it's down again... on a Tuesday... just hours before they announce their quarterly financials. We've been hearing about new pink iPod nanos all morning which have apparently been shipped to big box retail locations. Might we also see Penryn MacBook Pros and even a Canadian iPhone launch? What's that iPhone tab, pictured above, doing on the Canadian site anyway? Hang with us, we'll know shortly.
Update: Store is back, sorry Canada.

It's really interesting to see the iPhone tab on the Canadian site. It's not there when you are at the Apple homepage (Canada), but when you click the Store tab, you go to the page where it says the store is down but then it shows the iPhone tab there...and it still has "canadastore" in the URL.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/
That is the direct link... Canada Store, but the iPhone tab is at the top of the page... very interesting.
Lester Nelson @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:26AM
But! It links to the US page for the iPhone. In fact, all the nav links on that temporary "We'll be back soon" page are to US pages, unlike the rest of the Canadian site. I'd say they're just using the same temporary "we'll be back soon" page on both country's sites. That's not to say the Canadian iPhone isn't coming, but I don't think the navigation bar should be used as much of a herald of what's to come.
Ben @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:34AM
i don't know why the iPhone tab is there but don't they usually announce the iPhone for a specific country a few months before being released....like in the USA and like in the UK/Europe
Adam H @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:35AM
That's true, but then again... for the UK and the rest of Europe (not the US though) they did put the iPhone tab on the websites prior to actually releasing the product.
Max @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:36AM
thats it!!
randy @ Jan 22nd 2008 10:40AM
Or maybe the Apple Store's Mac OS X servers CRASHED, greeting the staff with BLACK SCREENS OF DEATH and KERNEL TEXT DUMPS as they arrived at work this morning.
Oh wait, that was me. AGAIN. Thanks, Apple. Your computers are so fucking reliable
Moorio @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:42AM
It's probably copied HTML from the down U.S. Store page.
Ben @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:45AM
considering every link goes to .com and not .com/ca i think your probably right.
Carbonize @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:46AM
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Just a generic template.
Adam H @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:45AM
It may be... however ONLY the US and Canada online stores are currently offline, all other world wide sites are still online... so this must be a North America announcement/product.
ozzielad @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:57AM
The Australian store has no mention of the iPhone. I'm hoping our canuck cousins get it today! :)

Ben Macrow @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:46AM
Well the UK store isnt down as it usually is when a major new product is released, I am guessing that rules out Penryn macbook pros and possibly even the pink nano's as new colours usually release worldwide aswell don't they?
I am placing my chips nearer the Canadian iPhone space!
finbred @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:49AM
Has to be something local as european stores are open for business. So no iPods or MBPs?
Cary @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:58AM
when the hell are they launching the iphone in the middle east!
sigh
Elliot @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:00AM
I can 100% guarantee it's a pink ipod nano
Matthew @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:02AM
Can someone please help me. I just bought a new MBP this past weekend. If they release new ones what is Apples policy? Can I exchange my current MBP for a new one free of charge within 14 days or am I screwed.
kevinm @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:05AM
Yes you have the 14 day grace period in case these things happen. I wouldn't count on a new MBP though.
ozzielad @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:06AM
Umm...the Macbook Pro is a better computer than the Air! :)
trumpton @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:05AM
What kind of rubbish company has to take down an entire site just to update a few pages?
Still, at least Engadget is on hand to dutifully record and journal the 'event.'
Vanillacide @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:15AM
The kind of rubbish company that are fantastic at PR and generate news stories on blogs such as this because the store is closed.
John Shillabeer @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:17AM
It's called free advertising.
Every time they take down the stores, hundreds of bloggers, journalists and Digg users let the world know.
slug @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:23AM
Go get another Zune tattoo!
wrabbit @ Jan 22nd 2008 10:08AM
@John Shillabeer: Well that pretty much reflects bad on both apple and the shee... I mean bloggers.
iceman @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:09AM

miso_soup @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:11AM

Look at the search results in the apple Canada site:
http://www.apple.com/ca/search/?q=iphone
Here's proof the iphone has just hit canada from the search link above:
http://www.apple.com/ca/support/iphone/
support for iphone in canada....oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RichmondCA @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:13AM
I have a feeling with Rogers announcing the new data plans that was the last piece in bringing the iphone to Canada.
Good indication this is a Canada only deal. Look at the Apple Australia Store:
http://store.apple.com/133-622/WebObjects/australiastore
Still up an no iPhone tab, Japan etc. also. Hmmm what's with that?
Ben @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:59AM
ah us in Australia aint good enough for the iphone yet we always get things last and over-prices products due to it being bloody imported.

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore
Ben Macrow @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:25AM

Vanillacide @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:49AM

Bill @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:25AM
My bad I didn't go to the UK store, I thought I did!
vince @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:41AM
Well, the Apple's Japan store is still up, and is showing no evidence for an iPhone tab. So...
arkady @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:03AM
It's only the pink nano. I got a message at work about it yesterday (I work in a computer shop in the UK)
thomashayes @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:05AM
Why whenever I see that 'we'll be back soon' post-it, do I imagine lots of little Apple cyber elfs pushing carts around and stocking shelves with iPhones and such.
nak @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:14AM
For the love of god, please let it be a pink iPhone, with matching dock and charger. Please! PLEASE!! PLLLEEEAAASE!!!!!
ricky @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:18AM
Office 2008 for Mac!
Joe @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:20AM
New ipods!
John @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:22AM
Stores in Europe ain't down. No MacBooks, no pink iPod, I reckon..
Erick @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:25AM
The page could just be a global placeholder like the aspnet app_offline.html feature (cuts off service and displays a custom message for everyone).
ben @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:42AM
Apple runs IIS?
Erick @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:53AM
No, something similiar to that feature in IIS
Simone @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:26AM
The Italian store is up and running:
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/italystore/
Erick @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:27AM
My question, why do they take a whole friggin store down to add new products? Isnt their store application powerful enough to have products in draft mode and when ready, release it to a date specified?
osalom @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:29AM
Mexico's store is down and same US url with iphone tab..
