White PS3 now approved for Stateside use

The FCC just approved the 40GB Ceramic White PS3 for US consumption. It's apparently the same model announced for Japan back in October. Perfect for the living room laboratory if ever released this side of the Pacific.

That look AWESOME
Chino B @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:22AM
Looks sexy but no backwards compatability? eh..
pquistgard @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:24AM
Yes, I can speak English
mattclarkie @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:12AM
I don't like it, the advantage I presume is that it won't get filthy like my shiny black one.
But when are they going to bring out the Silver, that looks so much nicer, or maybe some form of anthracite.
jacquerr @ Jan 22nd 2008 10:01AM
yes. white look awesome. sheesh. can't wait till they release blue/green/purple/pink. and every time we can ooh and ahh about how sexy and awesome this looks. *rolls eyes*
jacquerr @ Jan 22nd 2008 10:01AM
by the way, that's going to look awesome next to all my other "white non existing" gadgets in my entertainment center. how bout we drop the price, make more games and care less about cosmetics.
Bucket @ Jan 22nd 2008 2:48PM
Hey, thanks for that copy of Cool Edit.
pquistgard @ Jan 22nd 2008 3:09PM
Apparently he died. RIP.
MrFairladyz @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:56PM
Does look awesome, and even better with that white controller...i Think they will ship the ceramic white dualshock 3 with it.
Chino B @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:34AM
WTF are you trying to say?
Jesse S @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:37AM
I understood him fine...Am I missing something?
chris @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:47AM
honestly, lets give up complaining about backward capability. your dropping 400 bones on a next gen system, im assuming to play next gen games and blue ray movies. If you want ps2 games just keep your ps2, or hell, buy a new one for 50 bucks on ebay. hell ill give you mine. plus the emulation software for the ps3 is terrible so games will be better on the ps2 anyway. in closing, the new, cheaper 400 dollar ps3 is the best one yet in my opinion.
Chebwa @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:32AM
"plus the emulation software for the ps3 is terrible so games will be better on the ps2 anyway"
You know there were versions of the PS3 before the 80gb and 40gb models.
Look them up.
ZippO @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:56AM
PS3 in silver??? that's news!!!!
DrXym @ Jan 22nd 2008 10:29AM
The EU 60Gb / US 80Gb models had perfectly fine BC. It didn't support every title, but those that it did played just fine.
SteveMB @ Jan 23rd 2008 5:23PM
Well actually the 40GB and 80GB play most games through software emulation. The 20GB and 60GB have Emotion Engine chips and could play all PS2 games.
pquistgard @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:23AM
DANG IT
Andir3.0 @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:30AM
A little off topic, but I think Engadget is broken...
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/22/sony-hops-on-the-apple-bandwagon-with-comparative-love-fest/
Does not have the reply box at the bottom. Was this locked or something?
Intrepid @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:52AM
Noticed that too...
Jay @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:44AM
Then allow me to make a point here I can't post there:
Apple don't *make* anything. Everything is made for them by other companies. A marketing company is all they are.
They are Tchibo with a vain, egotistical, revisionist, narcissistic a&&hole at the top.
ryan @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:07AM
Jay,
Apple may not *make* anything, but they do design their products. They just have their products produced elsewhere. So how are they just a marketing company?
As with most Apple haters, you have very little information about the company you hate.
nxtiak @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:36AM
Any rumble yet?
I'm buying a PS3 when MGS4 comes out, hopefully it comes with a Rumble Controller.
Poom @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:12AM
Rumble has been out ages ago with Dualshock 3...
Bobs @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:34AM
Unlike the incident involving ryan block and his views on the zune, i dont see why the sony apple post was locked.
nxtiak @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:45AM
Yeah, I meant rumble for the USA. So far the Dualshock 3 is for Japan only.
So hopefully when this white one or whatever comes out that when I buy a PS3 to play MGS4 that rumble is available. I'd hate to buy a system then have to buy the Dualshock 3 months later when it's finally for sale in the USA.
mathew @ Jan 22nd 2008 12:21PM
Yeah, same here, waiting for DualShock 3 in the box. Apparently Sony are determined to sell off all the old units before they start shipping DualShock 3 though.
Ashraf @ Jan 22nd 2008 5:01PM
look closely at the white controller...what do you see?
btw. I want a Crimson Red PS3!
nxtiak @ Jan 22nd 2008 5:02PM
Ashraf, Engadget used the same picture of the JAPANESE version.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/09/sony-japans-ceramic-white-ps3-and-dualshock-3-announced/
silverblackvoid @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:43AM
i think it would look nice if they slapped a image of snake over the white ps3.
Blueace @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:44AM
Why does it need to be approved by the FCC?
Is it not just a regular PS3 with a different colour?
LivingNightmare @ Jan 22nd 2008 10:21AM
Based on what I know of the FCC and working with them while I was in the army, if you want to have something broadcast over any frequency, the FCC has to approve the hardware before it can be distributed in the US. Since it was originally intended for Japan, the FCC isn't just going to take Sony's word for it that it's the same exact console as the black one. They have to actually make sure it is.
Peter @ Jan 22nd 2008 11:13AM
Haven’t you heard about the lead paint recall?
OneLove @ Jan 22nd 2008 11:34AM
just don't lick it.
Intrepid @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:54AM
I don't get it either...
superted @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:10AM
bundle it with Little Big Planet and i'm all yours sony!
Zeus.:God @ Jan 22nd 2008 10:52AM
I still have no idea what the Hell LittleBigPlanet is supposed to be about... What is the point of it?
All I know is that its supposed to showcase some sort of physics that only the PS3 can do (yeah, right *rolls eyes*) or some shit.
Zeus.:God @ Jan 22nd 2008 4:26PM
I get ranked low for inquiring about a game?
superted @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:36PM
eh?! I replied a nice comment saying what it was and that frankly it probably wasn't worth it!
i even ranked yours up for the intrigue :)
I'll try and remember what I said - "It's a game where you have pretty much unlimited ability to create original levels - the game ships with lots of tiles and little things to make fancy platformer centric designs. When you make them you can share it with other people and play 4 player co-op in these levels. It does look really fun but to be honest all the marketing hype is probably rubbish - the whole 'physics you've never seen before' doesn't exactly fill me with confidence... i've seen realistic physics so if they're aiming for anything else, we'll all be playing with Quake 3 moon physics.
I do love the look of it, there's videos on Youtube of it in action but i really doubt i'd actually buy a PS3 just for it - Flow looks good but these are all not exactly 'triple A' titles!"
you shouldn't be ranked low for your comment, that's just people who love Little Big Planet and Sony being daft.
Andir3.0 @ Jan 23rd 2008 6:49AM
I'm sure he got voted down because he's a pattern anti-Sony/Playstation troll. Don't let his changed profile fool you. If you search for "Zeus the God", you'll find his posting history. And from the looks of it, an ignorant one who doesn't do any research and just blindly hates on the system.
Vince @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:14AM
I don't know what you guy's are looking at - that thing is ugly. I'll stay with black.
Brian @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:20AM
Looks very nice...
Now if only the ps3 had enough games to warrant selling my 360 for it... Blu Ray can only be so tempting. (Actually, screw blu ray... digital downloads are the only way I buy tv shows, anymore.)
Jesse S @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:38AM
You like DRM-infested badly compressed video?
Or is there some new lossless video service with no DRM, besides bittorrent?
Carbonize @ Jan 22nd 2008 7:47AM
And Blu Ray movies are not DRM infested?
Brian @ Jan 22nd 2008 8:20AM
@ Jesse S.
On my 32" 720p HDTV, the videos are gorgeous. Perhaps you should give it a try.
I've spent hundreds of dollars on Amazon Unbox downloads for high-def television shows. The tightly locked DRM on these files may seem painful to pirate happy thieves, but once I download the video from amazon, the key is downloaded to my computer and I can play the video in multiple players.
I am also convinced that the DRM will be hacked, eventually, and I will be free to back them up. (Although I really have a need to... they don't charge for me to download the files again)
Who provides your uncompressed, 1080p, free to download from celestial jukebox of music, movies, and television show? No one.
You just steal lower quality version through torrents.
Since when did it become a bad thing to pay for your media, much less when it is higher quality, and professionally encoded?
Anyhow, I also have to agree with Carbonize that the rediculous high def optical media is also "crippled" with DRM, so that argument is moot.
Why are you dolts buying optical media? Digital downloads are here, it's time to buy a $90 500GB hard drive and shrink your library to the size of a couple paperback novels.
Izzy @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:28AM
@Brian
You make a lot of points, some are valid.
However much you love having your video files downloaded onto a HD, HD's fail. Most people prefer to have a physical copy (BRD or DVD) that they can share with friends or bring on a trip, or just have. I think DL'ing video will become more popular, but physical media will be mainstream for a long time. Especially since tens of millions of people on the North American continent do not have broadband. Not to mention the rest of the world.
Chebwa @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:39AM
"I've spent hundreds of dollars on Amazon Unbox downloads for high-def television shows."
WTF, hundreds? On downloads!? OF TV SHOWS?!
Damn.
aaron @ Jan 22nd 2008 11:25AM
@Brian
You should have saved some of those "hundreds" and upgraded to a bigger TV with 1080p.
Brian @ Jan 22nd 2008 11:30AM
@ Chebwa
Yea, what's wrong with that? I used to buy them on DVD, but they
cost the same to buy online... and I get them in high def. Without a
high def dvd player.
And I get unlimited downloads, so I don't have to worry about a
scratched disc or a damaged hard drive.
@ Izzy
I've been running raid 0 10k rpm hard drives for years. I'm familiar
with disc failure. However, while I understand the inconvenience of
a failed hard drive, that doesn't mean the damage is irreparable.
Maintaining backups of unrecoverable data is an obvious necessity,
while sadly not common-place. For the most part, this is
inconsequential; The most popular online media shopping centers
allow you to download purchased goods as often as needed. It can be
moved from an old computer to a new computer, often requiring an
email to support for an additional key.
Xbox Live Marketplace and Amazon Unbox are provide fantastic content
and provide the foundations for future digital content delivery.
It's too bad recording industries are focusing on the here and now
through rediciulous control methods while they could be increasing
the popularity of legal distribution through rapid development and deployment of a universal, user friendly online marketplace.
I'm not talking about a website. I'm talking about an internet-based application that can be used on any personal computer, in stores on internet equipped kiosks (buy an album, instant download to wifi/wusb equipped mp3, sync it to your media center and computer at home), or on mobile device. (Buy a movie while leaving work, have it downloaded to your computer and/or media center and have a mobile copy converted and ready to sync by the time you get home)
There are scores of "starving" programmers in the world. There is no reason this vision isn't already reality, besides lack of vision by the recording industry, today.
There is money to be made, so let's get started, now!

On your 720p TV, your videos look "gorgeous". Opinion, and partially skewed. What about the rest of the world that sees low bitrate, low res movies on their bigger 1080p TV sets ?
There are full loseless audio and 1080p high bitrate movies available right now, it's called Blu-ray.
If you want to torrent (lol, use newsgroups), there are plenty of x264 encoded 1080p videos available at about 12-15GB that are 95% as good as the real deal. Heck, you can also just download the whole disc itself, play it back through PowerDVD.
This "digital HD download" stuff is fine for the general masses, but to anyone who cares about video PQ, it's subpar.
Brian @ Jan 23rd 2008 7:05AM
@ jynxycat
True, these aren't 1080p. I hadn't really considered that, since quality 1080p televisions were so far out of my price range. But I can see how the US isn't read for 15gb movie downloads, just yet.
Fios... save us!
