Some new lower-end A series cameras tonight as well, including the PowerShot A590 IS (8 megapixel sensor, 4x zoom with image stabilization, optional optical converter lenses), PowerShot A580 (8 megapixel sensor, 4x zoom, but no stabilization here -- it's got an "easy to hold grip), and the PowerShot A470 (7.1 megapixel sensor, 3.4x zoom, f/2.0 wide-angle aperture. All feature facial recognition, motion detection, high ISO, 2.5-inch LCDs, auto red-eye correction, DICI III processors, and affordable prices ($180, $150, and $130, respectively).

Those prices are amazing. When I bought my A610 back in the day in cost me quite a bit more than that!

$180 eh, let me process that number and convert it to euros... processing .. processing.. done $320.- in euros.
Wwhat @ Jan 24th 2008 12:38AM
I wonder what's new about it because the specs sound like previous models, looks to me what's new is that they used even more plastic, and by the price that they used lesser quality lenses maybe? hopefully not.
I guess we'll await the testing and sample images.

Just cheapie budget cameras.
I'm sure they're nice, but nothing of interest to camera nuts.
jivetrky @ Jan 24th 2008 1:29AM
If you notice the prices you will see that these are not cameras for "Camera Nuts"
They are point and shoot cameras, and very good point and shoot cameras for very good prices. No need to troll for no good reason.

I'm hanging out for the new IXUS series.
Wwhat @ Jan 24th 2008 1:12AM
Well if they use the DigicIII chip then they won't differ much either surely? What would be interesting is a DigicIV being introduced.
Daza @ Jan 24th 2008 1:51AM
Truth be told, I'm hanging out for the new IXUS series so the old, obsolete models will go cheap as peanuts :)

hehe, clever ;)

I was just about to buy an A570 IS too...debating whether to wait or what...my A70 is long in the tooth and it's time for a successor. Thought about the SD series but they had too many sacrifices for size.
Mostly I hope they made the battery life even better.
Max Pinton @ Jan 24th 2008 4:09AM
"f/2.0 wide-angle aperture" is nearly meaningless and not correct anyway. The A470 has an F3.0 maximum aperture. Its zoom lens has a 38-132mm range (35mm equivalent) which is not, unfortunately, anywhere in the neighborhood of "wide-angle."
And it's DIGIC III, not DICI III.

Aside from the price, the great thing about the Canon "A" series is that they all take standard AA cells, instead of proprietary battery packs. This means that, not only can I run it off the same bank of rechargeable AAs that powers my remote control, wireless mouse, and other gadgets, but I can always find fresh batteries when it runs out on the road.

Exactly, the #1 reason why I always buy Powershot 'A' cams. Just wish they'd introduce one with a wide angle lens; if they can get it in the SD series they surely can get it in the A series too.

I agree too; I've seen many of my relatives and friends say things like "oh better not take photos now.. save it for later cos the battery's running out".. granted they're nowhere near being camera adept (one of my cousins once took a rare family gathering photo at 3mpx... on her 8mpx camera... I was more than a little pissed off, since only she took a photo at the gathering) but I'm glad my A610 takes double As.
I also agree with the wide angle thing. I've been looking for a wide angle Canon with vari-angle LCD (I'm never getting another camera that doesn't have a flip-and swivel LCD, they're invaluable), but I've nearly given up and I'm considering replacing the A610 with a S5 IS and some conversion lenses (12x zoom with wide angle!). Hope Canon releases a S6 IS so the S5 price can come down a bit more~ ...Although I paid about the same for my A610 on discount (was a end-of-life display model) than what I'm going to be paying for the S5 if I buy now... :P

I am looking at the canon powershot cameras and am getting a bit confused because there are so many. I had one a couple of years ago from the A series which had the vari-angle LCD and the convertor lens adaptor. The camera got stolen but I've still got all the accessories (convertor lenses etc) and want to replace it. Does anyone know if there is a canon still out there with the option of convertor lenses and with the vari-angle LCD for a good price?
