Fujifilm's FinePix S100FS is their "most advanced" consumer model
How does a 14.3x Fujinon manual zoom lens, 8th generation 11 megapixel Super CCD sensor and new RP III processor sounds to you in a consumer camera? That's what you'll get next month when the $800 Fujifilm S100FS goes big box. Fujifilm's "most advanced consumer model" features Dual Image Stabilization (optical image and picture stabilization), up to ISO 6400 sensitivity at 6 megapixels (ISO 10,000 at 3 megapixels), 2.5-inch tilting LCD, 3 megapixel burst mode for a maximum of 50 shots at 7fps, and unique film-simulation modes optimized for portraiture, low-contrast (soft), vibrant colors (Velvia), or general use (Provia). Sounds good, but we'll have to wait for the reviews to see if there's any substance to the hype.

Why not spend the same on an older SLR, or a used SLR? Is there really a market for an almost-SLR priced consumer camera?
Personally I don't see it, but I suppose that if I could sell my 78' banana yellow AMC Concord with cancer throughout for 500 dollars, well anything is possible.

Some photographers would just like the convenience I guess, of not needing to spend money on expensive lenses on top of the cost of an SLR. Not to mention, this type of cam would also have things like a tiltable-live view LCD, movie mode, and an easier sort of 'point and shoot' type feel (for those moments when a SLR would look a little too obtrusive).

As a pro photographer (I shoot with a Canon 1Ds2), having a fun camera in your bag that is good and very light is amazing. Of course we all will want to wait to see the high ISO performance (10k!!!). I wouldn't care if it was at only 3 megapixels since this would be a fun camera.
For now, take note of the image stabalized and fast lens (f2.8 to f3.5) with a zoom of 28-400mm (equivelents of course), WOW, I mean WOWSERS!
HR bracketing, RAW, and movie mode (fun camera!)
If the IQ holds, I am all over this, especially if the street price is much lower. (I agree 800 is high, but they are offering a full pakage, I would preorder at 500.)

I'd much prefer this to an SLR because, with an SLR, by the time I've changed to the lens I need, the moments long gone.
Marden @ Mar 1st 2008 11:34PM
Aside from losing all the lenses that go with SLRs, You add in some of the features that exist in point and shoots that don't exist in DSLRs. For instance, I'm looking to spread my wings a little bit and get more into video, while still having nice-quality photos. Something you can't get in a DSLR (And why not???? This is the digital age after all? why are we still using SLR mechanical technology? Comon engineers! Get with the times!)
For me, I can't wait for this camera!

Im very pleased to see many manufactors implementing a manual zoom function in there "mega-zoomers". It`s just the simpelst, quickest and most precise way to zoom. Furthermore the battery will last longer.
FuzzyCat @ Jan 24th 2008 5:19AM
Seriously, stop with all the friggin cameras please. You must have had at least 20 in the last day.
Tim Brown @ Jan 24th 2008 5:37AM
That's still less than their icandy coverage
silverblackvoid @ Jan 24th 2008 9:35AM
everyone loves cameras. chill man.

I have the S6500FD and it is a brilliant camera, this is the BIGGER brother (and then some). This is so going to be my next purchase as if the image quality and speed of it is anything like the S6500FD then, for a non pro, it is a perfect camera if you dont (like me) want to be messing around with lenses. I will wait for the price to drop though.

Could we post something this week BESIDES a camera?
Naren Pingle @ Jan 24th 2008 7:07AM
I'm not a professional photographer, but would love to have this Camera for outdoors !!
chych @ Jan 24th 2008 9:34AM
Does 'manual' zoom mean that the zoom ring is mechanically connected to the zooming system? Or is the zoom ring just an electrical knob and there is a zooming motor on the lens? I love the former (i.e. in SLRs), but the latter is just not the same (i.e. on a Canon PowerShot Pro), as it has a lot of lag when zooming.
Maff @ Jan 24th 2008 10:26AM
dudes, PMA, a lot of us want to know what cameras our out and appreciate the breaking news! do you not have a scroll wheel or something?

I know Fuji products are good, but I can never buy anything from them because I automatically think "garbage" thanks to this music - http://www.amazon.com/Fuji-Garbage-Sikiru-Ayinde-Barrister/dp/B000000ZSG
Trev @ Jan 24th 2008 11:17AM
Manual zoom is nice, but the electronic focus ring is slow. And try doing it with a LCD viewfinder! It's a joke.
$800? A Rebel XTi or D40s anyday! where is the HD video?!
Alex R @ Jan 24th 2008 12:36PM
Mmmmmm....Yummy. I want, I want!
When will you be giving it away, o', holy ones?
kei @ Jan 24th 2008 5:31PM
Too bad it uses the NP-140 battery and not the 4xAA otherwise I will be all over this baby...I always prefer cameras that uses AA batt so I am freed from buying $50-a-pop propietary batteries....
Now I am torn between this or the new Pentax K200D....
Pine @ Jan 24th 2008 10:34PM
COOL.
Glad to see the mech image stabilization in this line.
I've been holding out for the SUPER CCD SR Pro to trickle down to the next S6500FD variant.
Maybe the next REV.
picjunkie @ Feb 29th 2008 10:12AM
Worst thing about a ground-breaking camera is all the better ones the other mfrs release after you've plunked down the cash for it. Argh, the pain and pleasure of technology!
slor @ Mar 20th 2008 12:42AM
It's not their fault, most cameras are released in january/febuary or august/september. Take a look at the following 2007 timeline for example.
