iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak goes live, update: it works!
Those of you torn between having an SNES emulator and vibrating icons need worry no more -- a team of iPhone hackers led by the illustrious Nate True has just posted an iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak. There are some hacker politics between the iPhone Dev Team and Nate involved, and the jailbreak is currently only for Windows users with previously-jailbroken 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 iPhones, but it's still sweet, sweet freedom. We're busy getting it up on one of our iPhones here at Engadget HQ, we'll let you know all the gory details when we're done.
[Via TUAW]
Update: We tested it to a spec jailbroken 1.1.2 phone, as the app requested -- it works alright.
Update 2: Now available for Mac-heads.

FIIIIRST!
Glad not only to have seen it been debated on the foruns but also for sending the story to engadget! AWESOME stuff!!!
Nando @ Jan 24th 2008 5:29PM
Foruns are fun.
The link is broken, Mr. Engdaget.
aguiluz @ Jan 24th 2008 6:34PM
Ugh... I was *about* to take this post an hour ago when I decided not to. I thought somebody might comment better. Nope, I was wrong.
I was about to say:
Does it actually brick your phone? (iBrickr is NOT a good name)
Hecktic @ Jan 24th 2008 6:42PM
True, also works great, when you do the installer part and the bar does not pass the halfway mark dont panic, you should get a apple circle spinning in the middle of the screen, now i paniced because it stayed there for 10 min, so i closed my eyes and did a hard reboot(hold power and home button)and sure enough 1.1.3 jail broken, installer says apps are installed but they are not shown, go to uninstall and uninstall everything, then reinstall everything. works
but?... anyone get the location fuinction in maps to work? mine keeps searching
Harkonian @ Jan 25th 2008 2:16PM
Did not work for my phone. The iBrikr app ran fine, I went to installer and tried to install the 1.1.3 image and received a message saying my iPhone is not ready for the 1.1.3 soft installer. I've tried it 3x with the same results.
I looked at the iBrickr error log and don't see any errors.
Harkonian @ Jan 25th 2008 3:14PM
In reply to hecktic:
On Nate's page he has the following:
*************
Why does the Google Maps My Location feature suck?
The 1.1.3 soft-upgrade does not upgrade the iPhone's cell phone radio. The new radio has features that aid Google Maps when there is no Wi-fi signal available. So the Maps app only has your Wi-fi positioning information to go on.
*************
So, it looks like the cell phone software needs to be updated via the real 1.1.3 in order to get google map positioning to work correctly. Ah well, hopefully it won't be too much longer before 1.1.3 jailbreak is released...
Eugenia Loli-Queru @ Jan 24th 2008 5:14PM
Does it also unlock the phone to be used with a non-iPhone AT&T SIM, or just jailbreaks it? I have an AT&T SIM you see, but not an iPhone contract, so I basically also need an unlocking mechanism.
John @ Jan 24th 2008 5:26PM
not you again...
Curtis @ Jan 24th 2008 6:51PM
Wow you are fugly.
Guzzie @ Jan 24th 2008 8:38PM
Twice for emphasis, I'm sure.
Ed @ Jan 25th 2008 8:11PM
LOL. You people are so vicious so times......
An honest question low ranked and then you bag on the "chick".
LOL.
Chris Derry @ Jan 28th 2008 8:20PM
Bunch of 14 year old jerkoffs in here...
fmg00 @ Jan 24th 2008 5:15PM
What happened to "not releasing until SDK is out"?
John @ Jan 24th 2008 5:20PM
as it requires you to have a previously jailbroken 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 iPhone, I'm guessing there's still a 1.1.3 unlock being sat on.
jess @ Jan 24th 2008 6:46PM
since it's windows only, and the engineers at apple only use macs, it's a safe bet apple won't reverse engineer it. Everyone wins, except the mac owners....
ethana2 @ Jan 25th 2008 1:39AM
Think of the penguins!
puxpux @ Jan 24th 2008 5:16PM
I can haz 1.1.2 OTB unlock now plz?? (what myself an 1000s of others are thinking)
frozenrubber @ Jan 24th 2008 5:48PM
Works beautifully! Don't forget to donate to the Dev Team.
fmg00 @ Jan 24th 2008 5:17PM
Obviously it only jailbreaks it, but it's the first step so you can (probably not just yet) use Anysim
Ty @ Jan 24th 2008 5:18PM
You have Windows machines at Engadget HQ?
404error @ Jan 24th 2008 5:26PM
Huuuuuuurrrrrrr
Good one
Ty @ Jan 24th 2008 5:37PM
You see what I did there?
Anthony @ Jan 24th 2008 6:39PM
Oh I see it, doesn't make it pretty though.
Andrew @ Jan 24th 2008 10:37PM
haha you sir have made my day complete (or madam, dont mean to be sexist...)
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 5:24PM
Wow, you guys still have to wait for jailbreaks to use 3rd party apps. That's why I bought a windows mobile phone. No waiting for my 3rd party apps. And the apps are actually supported by microsoft.
The -Minus World @ Jan 24th 2008 5:27PM
Go suck an egg!
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 5:29PM
nice response. I guess it was well thought out then, right?? You're just pissy you have to always wait for your apps. I understand. Oh wait, I don't, I wasn't dumb ebough to buy an Iphone.
The -Minus World @ Jan 24th 2008 5:31PM
I happen to work for an egg factory...
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 5:34PM
ANd that makes your response any better how???
Ty @ Jan 24th 2008 5:37PM
You do realize we had to wait the eternity that is one week, right?
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 5:39PM
That doesn't matter. I want my programs when I need them. Imagine the internet going out for a week. Or all 3rd party apps on Macs going out because they had to be hacked first. Imagine the mad chaos.
ThePengwin @ Jan 24th 2008 5:40PM
No offense to anyone, but seriously, thats how Windows Mobile rolls
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 5:43PM
Yeah, see. ThePengwin understands. Why can't you guys??
doyouflip @ Jan 24th 2008 5:56PM
Hmm...a million and one features on a platform that's a pain to use versus far fewer on one that's a pleasure to use.
Decisions, decisions...
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 6:05PM
A pain to use my ass, I use it everyday, along with many millions of other users of windows mobile.
caubeck @ Jan 24th 2008 6:11PM
"A pain to use my ass, I use it everyday, along with many millions of other users of windows mobile."
Oh you're talking dirty now.
Mike @ Jan 24th 2008 6:12PM
Windows Mobile? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha................... At least I can place and receive a call 99.999% of the time with my iPhone. My previous WM phones were always a hit or miss affair when it came to calls or SMS.
In any case your snide comments indicate you are most likely suffering from iPhone envy and are probably one of the tens of thousands of WM users that installed an iPhone-like interface.
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 6:16PM
What the fuck are you talking about??My phone gets perfect reception, and it actually has awesome 3g. It's an HTC TyTn II, one of the best mobile smartphones out there. I actually hate the iphone interfaces, I said "it looks to iphoney" when I saw the vids of it on gizmodo or lifehacker or something like that. I actually like the WM interface with the HTC plug in built in.
blackeagle @ Jan 24th 2008 6:28PM
honestly zebian why the hell do you care so much? If your phone is so much better then why bother trying to put down the iPhone?
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 6:29PM
because I hate it when people actually think there's nothing better than an Iphone. or a Razr. Pr anything like that. There is always something better than something that gets this much hype...
Curtis @ Jan 24th 2008 6:47PM
This has got to be the best thing you've ever said...
"I actually hate the iphone interfaces, I said "it looks to iphoney""
Imagine that! The iPhone interface looking to iPhoney! When I saw the new Windows Mobile interface I said, "I hate this interface, it just looks to damn Windowsey".
Anthony @ Jan 24th 2008 6:49PM
I wanted something I (not you) enjoyed using everyday. I got that with the iPhone. For me (again, not you) the iPhone was the best device. That is why I (...not you) paid for it.
I'm happy with it the way it is, but props to the jailbreaking community. They do good work.
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 6:50PM
@Curtis-
Idiot, I meant the Iphone interfaces for Windows Mobile, there are Iphone interfaces for WM and also "Simpler" interfaces for Windows mobile. That was what I was referring to, as I said "Iphone interfaceS"! withan S!! meaning more than one!! Which the Iphone doesn't have, it's only got one Iphone Interface!!! interfaces refers to the Windows mobile add ons!
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 6:52PM
@Anthony-
I understand you may like the Iphone, as do many other people, but I am not alone. There are many other WM users that love using WM, not just me. The only reason you don't see any of them in this post is because they usually won't care about Iphone news, but I like to see what competing products have to offer.
Mtirv @ Jan 24th 2008 6:55PM
Wait, what?
http://appleiphoneschool.com/summerboard/
Curtis @ Jan 24th 2008 6:56PM
Yes, through all your pathetic ranting I understood that you were talking about the Windows Mobile add-on. What is funny though is that you though the iPhone interface was to iPhoney...what were you expecting? An interface that didn't look like the iPhones?
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 6:58PM
@curtis- No you idiot, you didn't understand. I said the WM add-ons looked to iphone-y to me. Not the actual Iphone interface.
ANd @Mtirv-
soo... it's still a hack, right??? you still have to always wait for the next jailbreak...
Curtis @ Jan 24th 2008 7:06PM
No, I perfectly understood what you said, you just didn't actually read my reply before quickly posting...I will put it in easier terms for you so that you will understand what I said...
You use WM add-on that make phone look like iPhone. You think it then look to much like iPhone. You surprised. You shocked. You think interface intended to make phone look like iPhone looks to iPhoney. You surprised. You shocked.
There, hope that helps.
Sam Zebian @ Jan 24th 2008 7:10PM
Here is what you said- "What is funny though is that you though the iPhone interface was to iPhoney"
That's what you said, and I interpreted it exactly like that, so don't try to convince me otherwise you understood it, because you didn't. Until I posted a reply, then you got it. and you even did it in your native tongue! Caveman language!! Bravo!
Curtis @ Jan 24th 2008 8:20PM
It's pretty obvious that I was talking about the add-on. Next time I'll make sure that instead of saying just iPhone interface when referring to your WM add-on I'll say "iphone interface add-on for your windows mobile cellular device pda smartphone". That was you won't get confused, sorry for thinking you could comprehend something past a 3rd grade reading level.
