iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak goes live, update: it works!
Those of you torn between having an SNES emulator and vibrating icons need worry no more -- a team of iPhone hackers led by the illustrious Nate True has just posted an iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak. There are some hacker politics between the iPhone Dev Team and Nate involved, and the jailbreak is currently only for Windows users with previously-jailbroken 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 iPhones, but it's still sweet, sweet freedom. We're busy getting it up on one of our iPhones here at Engadget HQ, we'll let you know all the gory details when we're done.
[Via TUAW]
Update: We tested it to a spec jailbroken 1.1.2 phone, as the app requested -- it works alright.
Update 2: Now available for Mac-heads.

FIIIIRST!
Glad not only to have seen it been debated on the foruns but also for sending the story to engadget! AWESOME stuff!!!
Foruns are fun.
The link is broken, Mr. Engdaget.
Ugh... I was *about* to take this post an hour ago when I decided not to. I thought somebody might comment better. Nope, I was wrong.
I was about to say:
Does it actually brick your phone? (iBrickr is NOT a good name)
True, also works great, when you do the installer part and the bar does not pass the halfway mark dont panic, you should get a apple circle spinning in the middle of the screen, now i paniced because it stayed there for 10 min, so i closed my eyes and did a hard reboot(hold power and home button)and sure enough 1.1.3 jail broken, installer says apps are installed but they are not shown, go to uninstall and uninstall everything, then reinstall everything. works
but?... anyone get the location fuinction in maps to work? mine keeps searching
Did not work for my phone. The iBrikr app ran fine, I went to installer and tried to install the 1.1.3 image and received a message saying my iPhone is not ready for the 1.1.3 soft installer. I've tried it 3x with the same results.
I looked at the iBrickr error log and don't see any errors.
In reply to hecktic:
On Nate's page he has the following:
*************
Why does the Google Maps My Location feature suck?
The 1.1.3 soft-upgrade does not upgrade the iPhone's cell phone radio. The new radio has features that aid Google Maps when there is no Wi-fi signal available. So the Maps app only has your Wi-fi positioning information to go on.
*************
So, it looks like the cell phone software needs to be updated via the real 1.1.3 in order to get google map positioning to work correctly. Ah well, hopefully it won't be too much longer before 1.1.3 jailbreak is released...
Does it also unlock the phone to be used with a non-iPhone AT&T SIM, or just jailbreaks it? I have an AT&T SIM you see, but not an iPhone contract, so I basically also need an unlocking mechanism.
not you again...
Wow you are fugly.
Twice for emphasis, I'm sure.
LOL. You people are so vicious so times......
An honest question low ranked and then you bag on the "chick".
LOL.
Bunch of 14 year old jerkoffs in here...
What happened to "not releasing until SDK is out"?
as it requires you to have a previously jailbroken 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 iPhone, I'm guessing there's still a 1.1.3 unlock being sat on.
since it's windows only, and the engineers at apple only use macs, it's a safe bet apple won't reverse engineer it. Everyone wins, except the mac owners....
Think of the penguins!
I can haz 1.1.2 OTB unlock now plz?? (what myself an 1000s of others are thinking)
Works beautifully! Don't forget to donate to the Dev Team.
Obviously it only jailbreaks it, but it's the first step so you can (probably not just yet) use Anysim
You have Windows machines at Engadget HQ?
Huuuuuuurrrrrrr
Good one
You see what I did there?
Oh I see it, doesn't make it pretty though.
haha you sir have made my day complete (or madam, dont mean to be sexist...)
Wow, you guys still have to wait for jailbreaks to use 3rd party apps. That's why I bought a windows mobile phone. No waiting for my 3rd party apps. And the apps are actually supported by microsoft.
Go suck an egg!
nice response. I guess it was well thought out then, right?? You're just pissy you have to always wait for your apps. I understand. Oh wait, I don't, I wasn't dumb ebough to buy an Iphone.
I happen to work for an egg factory...
ANd that makes your response any better how???
You do realize we had to wait the eternity that is one week, right?
That doesn't matter. I want my programs when I need them. Imagine the internet going out for a week. Or all 3rd party apps on Macs going out because they had to be hacked first. Imagine the mad chaos.
No offense to anyone, but seriously, thats how Windows Mobile rolls
Yeah, see. ThePengwin understands. Why can't you guys??
Hmm...a million and one features on a platform that's a pain to use versus far fewer on one that's a pleasure to use.
Decisions, decisions...
A pain to use my ass, I use it everyday, along with many millions of other users of windows mobile.
"A pain to use my ass, I use it everyday, along with many millions of other users of windows mobile."
Oh you're talking dirty now.
Windows Mobile? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha................... At least I can place and receive a call 99.999% of the time with my iPhone. My previous WM phones were always a hit or miss affair when it came to calls or SMS.
In any case your snide comments indicate you are most likely suffering from iPhone envy and are probably one of the tens of thousands of WM users that installed an iPhone-like interface.
What the fuck are you talking about??My phone gets perfect reception, and it actually has awesome 3g. It's an HTC TyTn II, one of the best mobile smartphones out there. I actually hate the iphone interfaces, I said "it looks to iphoney" when I saw the vids of it on gizmodo or lifehacker or something like that. I actually like the WM interface with the HTC plug in built in.
honestly zebian why the hell do you care so much? If your phone is so much better then why bother trying to put down the iPhone?
because I hate it when people actually think there's nothing better than an Iphone. or a Razr. Pr anything like that. There is always something better than something that gets this much hype...
This has got to be the best thing you've ever said...
"I actually hate the iphone interfaces, I said "it looks to iphoney""
Imagine that! The iPhone interface looking to iPhoney! When I saw the new Windows Mobile interface I said, "I hate this interface, it just looks to damn Windowsey".
I wanted something I (not you) enjoyed using everyday. I got that with the iPhone. For me (again, not you) the iPhone was the best device. That is why I (...not you) paid for it.
I'm happy with it the way it is, but props to the jailbreaking community. They do good work.
@Curtis-
Idiot, I meant the Iphone interfaces for Windows Mobile, there are Iphone interfaces for WM and also "Simpler" interfaces for Windows mobile. That was what I was referring to, as I said "Iphone interfaceS"! withan S!! meaning more than one!! Which the Iphone doesn't have, it's only got one Iphone Interface!!! interfaces refers to the Windows mobile add ons!
@Anthony-
I understand you may like the Iphone, as do many other people, but I am not alone. There are many other WM users that love using WM, not just me. The only reason you don't see any of them in this post is because they usually won't care about Iphone news, but I like to see what competing products have to offer.
Wait, what?
http://appleiphoneschool.com/summerboard/
Yes, through all your pathetic ranting I understood that you were talking about the Windows Mobile add-on. What is funny though is that you though the iPhone interface was to iPhoney...what were you expecting? An interface that didn't look like the iPhones?
@curtis- No you idiot, you didn't understand. I said the WM add-ons looked to iphone-y to me. Not the actual Iphone interface.
ANd @Mtirv-
soo... it's still a hack, right??? you still have to always wait for the next jailbreak...
No, I perfectly understood what you said, you just didn't actually read my reply before quickly posting...I will put it in easier terms for you so that you will understand what I said...
You use WM add-on that make phone look like iPhone. You think it then look to much like iPhone. You surprised. You shocked. You think interface intended to make phone look like iPhone looks to iPhoney. You surprised. You shocked.
There, hope that helps.
Here is what you said- "What is funny though is that you though the iPhone interface was to iPhoney"
That's what you said, and I interpreted it exactly like that, so don't try to convince me otherwise you understood it, because you didn't. Until I posted a reply, then you got it. and you even did it in your native tongue! Caveman language!! Bravo!
It's pretty obvious that I was talking about the add-on. Next time I'll make sure that instead of saying just iPhone interface when referring to your WM add-on I'll say "iphone interface add-on for your windows mobile cellular device pda smartphone". That was you won't get confused, sorry for thinking you could comprehend something past a 3rd grade reading level.
"Sam Zebian - because I hate it when people actually think there's nothing better than an Iphone. or a Razr. Pr anything like that."
You mean like you're doing with your WM tirades?
How am I supposed to undertand something when you weren't even clear about it at all...
Wow this is going way too far. Yes iPhone WORKS better and is more fun to use. Oh and BTW iphone as a great marketshare of smartphones now then any and all windows mobile phones combined.
Wow... I was reading the comments and started reading the replies to this post, and after I read about 3 of sam's, I just went down the line and gave all of them a negative rating. Do you have a life, sam?
@kurtis-
screw you man, I was just talking to my friends on AIM, gmail talk and windows live messenger the whole time, so yea, I think I have enough friends to consider having a life (I know using AIM and gmail talk and a webcam doesn't necessarily mean having a life, but hey, I've probably got more friends than you do man), and I have a gmail notifier ni firefox that makes the outlook notification noise, so know, I haven't been sitting here for 3 hours hitting F5. Anyways, I don't even feel like talking about you losers anymore, it's pointless. You're all Apple fanboys, why should I argue with you guys, there's too many of you crazy fanboys out there, and the fanboy haters can really care less, that's why they wouldn't bother commenting on you guys...
Sam, why are you, a happy WM user wasting your time commenting on an iPhone related post? I'm glad you're happy with your phone. Many are not. Why are you here. Could your iPhone envy be any more obvious?
Rofl at this thread. Total high rank farming (or in the case of Sam, failing).
@reader-
You think I care about my rank, it's all going to end up negative anyways, look at all of the fanboys going up against me.
@Bryan Ledford-
Because I think it's just screwed up the way Apple treats it's customers, and there is barely anyone that gets pissed off about it. The Iphone doesn't run 3rd party apps from day 1- WHAT!! is what I think. The ipod touch program pack cost $20 bucks for preexisting owners!!! What!!! why do people still praise Apple and Steve Jobs as if he is a god when all they do to you guys is nickel and dime you for another thing, and then it's suddenly "Innovative" for everything they do, right?? That's why I'm posting here. Because this whole entire thread shouldn't even exist, the Iphone should've been able to run 3rd party apps from day 1. I know about the SDK in February, but why didn't they have this set and ready to go on day 1?? Because Apple likes to keep a closed system so that they get to sell the consumers as much as they can from Apple, and only Apple, not from 3rd parties, which is how they make their money. Anyways, I'm done with this thread. I'm going to go do something else (maybe you guys should too, it's kinda getting late (at least in the eastern US it is))
Hey Sam... take all those "lowest ranked" as a clue...
SHUT UP!!!
RAWR I HUNGER FOR LOW RANKINGS CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP
can you use a turbo sim or a stealth sim with this?
I dunno, I jailbroke(?) my iPhone at 1.1.2 and the only things I found slightly useful were the iChat app and the MobileScrobbler, but iChat disconnected when I pressed the home button and MobileScrobbler wasn't as enticing as multiple SMS and webpage icons. Also, my iPhone became pretty unstable when it was jailbroken. The camera would freeze at times, and pressing the home screen button made it freak out from time to time.
I'll just wait for supported 3rd party apps, thanks.
Hackers 3 Apple 0
What exactly counts for a win for Apple?
Just trying to make the game fair here ;)
Well, an open OS that promotes and encourages 3rd party apps without hacker intervention.
Absent that...how about an SDK that provides a restrictive framework in which Apple-approved gadgets can improve the iPhone franchise, provided their creators don't mind involving Apple with a little revenue sharing... HA
iPhone SDK coming soon...
I have a 1.1.1 unlocked / jailbroken phone... I wonder if I update / jailbreak to 1.1.3 if my phone will be relocked, or remain unlocked??
I had mine jailbrokend with jailbreakme.com then i restored it and 1.1.3 was installed, but it is blocked like new from the box.
it remains unlocked. but my EDGE network is not working..
God. Are we going to be cursed with a never ending cycle of Jailbreak "stories" for every single ruddy upgrade to the ruddy iPhone?
It's a nice phone, but I'll be fingernadged if I'm going to commit to an endless lock/unlock/lock/unlock dance just to get basic functions available on most other smartphones.
"fingernadged" ???
This is pretty useless unless you can actually upgrade your 1.1.1/1.1.2 unlocked to 1.1.3 and still be unlocked.
Hey Engadget, you forgot to send me my iPhone. What happened?
According to Nate True's webpage, some people are saying their phones stay unlocked after the upgrade.
Anyone got the kahunas to try?
...and this works for the ipod touch right?
No.
iPhone only.
I have a Mac, my iToons is 7.6, my iPhone is running 1.1.3 firmware,
what are my chances to do this "jailbrake"?
u cant u have to have a jailbroken 1.1.1 or 1.1.2
pretty low chance seeing as its windows only.
Grrr....takes up ~400MB on the iPhone...how can we delete the firmware image after it's been installed? And despite being 1.1.3, the google maps locate me feature has yet to work (just continues searching).
Tried using MobileFinder to delete it?
So this is not a 1.1.3 Jailbreak, it is a 1.1.3 update for earlier firemewears
I just ran this but after its done, installer shows that all my apps are still there but nothing shows up on the springboard. Anyone have a fix for this?
I uninstalled and reinstalled...
Thats what i just started to do, kinda a pain though. Hopefully they can fix this
in case anyone wants to know this installs flawlessly. however it does delete previously installed 3rd party apps other than that its great
Shite... I ran the program and now my iPhone (which was a jailbroken 1.1.1) is in recovery mode...
I ran the iBricker program, but I can't find the soft installer in installer.app, where is it?
ibricker worked for me as well but I cant seem to find the 1.1.3 soft upgrade package from installer too!! Which depository is it in???
in installer press "source" then the refresh button top left.
make sure you have the source:
Ste Packaging: psmxy.org/iphone-apps
anyone confirm this leaves previously unlocked phones still unlocked?
Can any of the people who've tried this (including Engadget!) let us know the details of how their phones were unlocked and whether the unlock persisted?
I'm using a TurboSIM which is fairly resilient to upgrades, but I heard that 1.1.3 stopped it working - I'm not sure if my phone will remain unlocked if I perform this jailbreak?
i use turbosim also. it remained unlocked. but my EDGE network is not working
can some one help me out with this?
I currenlty have t mobile and i want to get an iphone and unlock it.
my only concern is if all the features work how they were designed to work, i had previous phone that was unlocked and i wasnt able to use the internet at all even though i was setup for it.
I already updated to 1.1.3 so no go for me. Not that I really care, I had a jailbroken iPhone for months until 1.1.3 and after the initial fun factor of using 3rd party apps I realized I never used any of them - if nothing else it made the iPhone unstable and annoying. I'm happily waiting for official SDK apps that will be optimized/tested for the iPhone and NOT run as root!
I followed all the directions, but when I get to the point of the installer.app part, it downloads the app, gets to installing, then the iphone reboots four seconds later with no change
Byzil, keep waiting
True, also works great, when you do the installer part and the bar does not pass the halfway mark dont panic, you should get a apple circle spinning in the middle of the screen, now i paniced because it stayed there for 10 min, so i closed my eyes and did a hard reboot(hold power and home button)and sure enough 1.1.3 jail broken, installer says apps are installed but they are not shown, go to uninstall and uninstall everything, then reinstall everything. works
but?... anyone get the location fuinction in maps to work? mine keeps searching
same with mine, wtf?
