This could be the first video footage of Windows 7
Obviously a lot of people cried fake when those screenshots purporting to show Windows 7 Ultimate popped up -- possibly because they looked a lot like rebadged Vista screens -- so the blogger who originally posted the images has followed up with a video for proof. And we do have to say, if this is fake, someone put a hell of a lot of work into pulling it off, from creating a new bootup screen to hacking the source code to adding fresh Media Center options. ThinkNext tells us that this release -- known as Milestone 1 -- expires in May of this year, although if Redmond and its team of crack Enemy of the State-types have anything to say about it, this particular blog will not be getting another preview copy next time around. Video after the break.[Via Softpedia, image courtesy of ThinkNext, thanks Joshua]

Look at the Media center copyright date. If this was such a "New" version, than why was it copyrighted in 2006? Another small detail is that if this is an early version of windows 7, than why is it version 6.whatever? Just small technicalities which brek it for me.
To everyone who's going "OH! IN MEDIA CENTER IT SAYS WINDOWS VISTA" did anyone even bother to check their own? I have SP1 on my Vista and I have 6.0.6001.17128 (longhorn.080101-1935)
and the video says 6.1.6519.1 (winmain.071220-1525)
This was the point of showing the software version page.
HE'S USING A CRT! GET HIM!!!
Wow... Ummm, guys...
It still says version 6, because they just started, and are working their way up to build 7.
Vista currently says "6.0", not "6.1"...
There was a pretty nice loading screen there that just simply is not there in Vista at the moment. Is it possible he customized it? Of course, but until I see someone else pull that off, and show us how, I'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Media center is a seperate program installed onto Windows. It could be Windows 865234685, but if it's still the Vista version of Media Center, it's going to say "Vista", regardless of the build.
...
Still slow as fuck.
and it takes 40 seconds for it to load from startup.... wow.
i do hope next windows is totally different from vista, and will be actually good. so it will better compete with Apple. right now thanks to Vista, more people are considering macs.
they need a better GUI and a new graphic design team. the colours and trasparent aero glass look is just horrible.
anyone think it's kinda strange that it Windows 7 Ultimate, but the version number begins with a 6... FAKE!!!
someone should tell them that it hasn't been 2006 for a couple years now. can't they get the "latest" copyright to build into the binaries using date() or something?
Well, aren't we forgetting that the first screenshots of Longhorn looked exactly like XP? This could easily be real. I'm not convinced, but I'm just saying.
As long as this is a update for Vista, and not a entirely different product, I'm fine with what they're doing. Spent money on Vista Ultimate, a total failure. They should make Windows 7 a Update to Vista. to fix their failed Windows Vista. If not... i guess I'll go and get a Mac. and also change all of my family and friend's computers to Mac...
I was under the impression that win7 (vienna) was billed as a "code break".. basically MS officials were building up that it was going to make radical changes to the codebase of windows that would break support for every single application built prior to win7.
If this is real then I suggest making a video of an application that was developed for XP, that installs ok on vista (rare) but yet should break when installed on win7.
As it is, we don't have enough evidence that this is real or fake, just that the same video could be produced using applications already on the net (I used to make custom boot and logon screens for people for their XP installs).
We need more info (ie more vids showcasing new developments) before we can make any decision - this is rightly in the same category as the blurry UFO and bigfoot vids... simply not enough evidence.
Not true - they would be very stupid to break the entire app. base. - that's practicaly their only (but very strong) advantage over other OSes...
However, they will break the legacy suport - they are already breaking it with 64bit versions (no 16bit app suport) and they will continue to do so - which is right! - The biggest problem of windows was that they try to backwards support everything - killing support shuld allow more modernization to the OS.
But for example .NET support will remain as it is, even VB6.0 will continue to be supported as will most of the current applications. DOS emulation should be completely gone by Win7.
It is under the hood taht is exciting... Eye candy comes for the average Joe... And don't say it was the same with Vista - Win 5x -> 6.0 could be compared to MacOS 9 -> MacOS X with Quartz extreme... WPF is quite amazing;)
As for MinWin - think of it as Darwin for MacOS X. And the current builds use MinWin with Vista shell on top of it - as stated by MS.
P.S. Written from MBP on MacOS X 10.5.1 ;) so no FANBOI basshing
basically, I was hoping that "legacy support" for all pre-win7 applications was going to come in the form of their hyper-v tech.. and that win7 natively wouldn't support any of the old apps but the OS could still run them using virtualisation instead.
effectively giving a real "windows on windows" instead of providing backwards compatibility with the current windows on windows (wowexec.exe) implementation.
*sigh* if they're gonna stick to having the support in the native OS codebase then microsoft really haven't learned anything :(
2 minutes 48 seconds. does it not say vista there?? am i missing something here??
That boot time was slow! I almost fell asleep watching the video.
Because it uses GUI Boot mode... Which is optional on Vista (and will probably be on Win7 - but maybe the other way around?) since it takes a lot longer - but some people find it prety and turn it on... Normal people just don't have the time and are smart enough to use the default and the faster boot screen;)
I mean...Do you look at your boot screen everytime you start your computer:p
it is vista with a new badge.
I might buy it, just to get my facking bluetooth headset working with visa!!!¬¬¬¬ [/rant]
Completely Fake. Windows 7 Ultimate!!...version 6.1
There are so many downloads on the web to change your computers appearance, there is no doubt this is one of those free tweakable downloads.
Anybody remember what the first builds of Longhorn/Vista looked like? Yup, almost exactly like Windows XP.
But if they'er using Vista as a base operating system, they're going to have some serious problems. Adding another 5GB of "features" without rewriting or completely removing the old, dilapiated code, is going to backfire.
it wont backfire cause Vista does not use dilapidated code as everything under the hood is brand new, the only thing they are doing is using Vista as the start and soon after M2 build is when they will replace the current UI and exploror with something new oh and they are using MinWin so thing are already a tad smaller. anyways yea so
fake. losers.

here we go Paul confirms the build that we have been seeing as a Real build
It looks like Vista. No surprise here. As was the case with all previous Windows versions, the first milestone build of the next version looks like its predecessor. All the visual cues are the same: The Start orb, taskbar, Sidebar, desktop, and Explorer windows are all very much Vista. This doesn't mean that these things won't change in the future. It means that Microsoft is focusing on other low-level aspects of Windows 7--like MinWin--at this time.
It is Vista. For now. The product version is listed as 6.1, compared to Vista, which is version 6.0. This places the current Windows 7 build firmly in the Vista family, alongside Windows Server 2008. Don't read too much into this: All this really means is that the current Windows 7 build is using the most recent version of Vista kernel, otherwise known as the version in Windows Server 2008. Again, no surprise there: This can and will change in the future. The question is whether it changes to something like 6.2 or 6.5 or gets bumped up to 7.0, as suggested by the product's codename. My guess is that Windows 7 will indeed ship with version 7.0 of the Windows kernel.
All Windows OSes are built on each other. Or most are, anyway. XP was adapted from ME, 98 SE. Vista was adapted from XP, the new OS will be built on Vista. Don't worry about a thing, Vista users... Because Vista was in the works since XP was launched in 2002. Hopefully, this un-named Windows version wont be as rushed and rough around the edges as Vista was, but we'll have to see how it pans out.
For the visual similarities, I'm sure Microsoft have big plans for the Aero theme or a new UI to come and replace it, Vista/Longhorn used a modified XP Energy theme when the first leaked version got out into the public and slowly but surely, Aero crept its way into Vista nearer the end of the development cycle. But just to show you how UIs can change drastically from conception to birth...

Compare those screens to a final build of Vista.
I realize that this has been brought up before, but all I could think while I was watching this was;
"How the hell does someone who can't even focus a damned camera properly get his hands on an early build of Windows 7? I guess I went the wrong route and actually learned how to use my technology."
Did anyone else notice that the version in the about page was 6.1 not 7? Seriously. How hard is it to change a boot screen. you can do it on XP. And while your doing that go ahead and hack the about page.
Looks fake to me. New startup screen? New "Orb"? Put "7" where "Vista" is? All can be done with programs like Windowblinds or StyleXP (or StyleVista if it ever comes out) or with registry hacks. Anyone can make any OS look however way they want with time and research.
I changed my Vista "Orb" to look like a Silver Windows Flag that glows. Easy Peasy. Can I tout that as a new feature in Vista SP1? NO! (Well, i could try, but that wouldn't work ;-)
ok then tell me how they took out the sidebar but kept the gadgets on the desktop?
what you people dont seem to understand is that this is very likely Real but you expect to see major major changes right off the bat ya know. with every Os the first version of it has minor changes made to it and this is more or so what you aspect to see in the first version of the next OS.
That may be true, but until I hear something from the horse's mouth i.e. Microsoft, I'm just gonna have to discount it.
If it's really Windows 7? Cool. Can't wait to see what they come up with.
I don't know if it's real or not, but I for one think Vista looks really nice. There's really no reason to change the way it looks, maybe only the way it functions.
And even then - I don't think Vista's broken. And I"m a Mac user :p
All I know is before Vista, dumb dumbs complained that XP was too insecure, that they'd get virus, that crap would be installed without their permission, blah blah blah. Vista comes out, and now everyone complains about how it always wants someone's permission.
yeah, so does OSX. Big whoop. No one seems to care about that.
I spotted an error- the media center coppyright it 1985-2006. What- no one worked on this part of windows 7 in 2007? I doubt its real, if so its a very early and simple change.
ps. y'all reply a lot.
It's Fake. Just some simple editing of Vista, and someone has taken a Screenshot and a video of it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Also, Microsoft would be the first to show screenshots of the OS in action, not some random guy who doesn't even work for them.
This is a fake.
Have a look at the operating system version when the user shows Windows 7. The version is Windows 6.1.
This is a video of Vista Ultimate Edition with a shell addon. (Like Windows XP themes).
Microsoft won't begin version 7 releases until version 6 is "perfected".
I beta tested Windows 6 Service Pack 1 on Windows Server 2008 and it is much faster then Vista (without a service pack). Once Vista is polished and Microsoft have a decent workable starting point, then they will divert all the tweaks needed for Windows Vista to be an actual "usable" operating system into a new version - Version 7.
There is no money in releasing everything is one operating system.
Microsoft's policy of slow-release-technology is what keeps them in business.
So. Has anyone heard of logon studio? Or any of the other million windows-hacking/editing/changing programs that exist on the internet? I'd say its a scam, they won't have a working program out yet...
Sounds like Vista was just "New Coke" to me.
