Nikon D60 DSLR press release leaked
Well folks, that Nikon D60 DSLR we'd heard whispers about way back in the crazy, carefree days of December 2007 appears to be on the verge of coming to light at this year's PMAs. Digital Photography Review has gotten a leaked press release from the company concerning the new shooter, and now we've got a sheet of specs to backup the rumors. It looks like the 10.2-megapixel camera will be sporting a number of improvements, including a 0.19-second power-up, continuous shooting mode at three frames per second, Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II, compatibility with AF-S and AF-I Nikkor lenses, RAW image handling, in-camera retouching capabilities, and a slew of other, incredibly technical functions that the true camera-geek will surely salivate over. Our suggestion? Hit the read link, and take your good old time poring over the details.

I would still stick with my D80..cant bash the d60 because Nikon makes some great cameras
spass @ Jan 28th 2008 1:10PM
Well, I would sticl with my D70s, still.
Other cameras are imprivements, but not huge gap. D300 is worth the effort.
Onetruebill @ Jan 28th 2008 3:15PM
I also have a D80 and I don't hear anything that sounds new. The one thing I would want is the ability to use the screen when shooting pics, like over other people in a crowd.

No live view LCD yet? Cheesh. Only thing I don't like about my D40.
Joe_Templeman @ Jan 28th 2008 1:37PM
Personally I cant see the need. Ive been using my D50 for a year now and I've never really felt like I miss it.
The main interesting spec is whether it will have the AF motor in-built. Thats the only thing which persuaded me NOT to buy the D40/x.
Joe_Templeman @ Jan 28th 2008 1:33PM
Very nice, the most interesting thing will be the price. If its replacing the D40, then I'm guessing its going to be around the £350 mark body only.
Not bad specs, but I cant see it changing the scene at the moment. D80 would be a much better investment, but each to their own...
Leoedin @ Jan 28th 2008 2:03PM
More likely to be replacing the D50. The D40 is (as far as I can see) a step down from the D50.
scryber @ Jan 28th 2008 2:03PM
I was hoping for a D90. These specs, compared to the announced Canon 450D, are a joke:
-3 AF points versus 9
-2.5" versus 3" LCD
-No live view
-No AF lens motor
-Does it do high quality JPGs plus RAW (same shot)? The D40x didn't. The 450D does.
It's really not much of a contest if you're starting without previous lenses. This is really disappointing.
Dankoozy @ Jan 28th 2008 2:15PM
let me guess - in true nikon (and now canon) style it only supports SD cards.
sd is a terrible format. gah only olympus left supporting CF. no idea what made them all decide to kill off the superior CF format. but o well i'm sure CF will be more popular when SSD's go mainstream.
NutMac @ Jan 28th 2008 2:52PM
RE: SD/SDHC vs. CF, Canon's entry level SLR (EOS 450D/Digital Rebel XSi) is also SD/SDHC now. Although CF is the format of choice for those seeking high capacity, high performance memory cards, SDHC is quickly closing the gap (often with superior price per capacity). As SLR enthusiast, I have a stack of CF cards and I would hate to see them become obsolete. On mid- to high-end SLRs, I expect CF to become the norm for many years to come. But let's face it. Memory card should be one of the last things on SLR buyer's mind when there are far more important factors to consider (e.g., lens selection, viewfinder, metering capability, quality/size of the image sensor, continuous shooting speed).
tamoghno @ Jan 28th 2008 2:17PM
what exactly is the difference between D60 & D80 ?
Joseph @ Jan 28th 2008 2:52PM
lenses AF-s only
and about $300
tsx @ Jan 28th 2008 4:00PM
weight / size: the D80 is almost 27% heavier and 38% bigger than the D40x
Andrew H. @ Jan 28th 2008 2:49PM
if its less than $200 step-up from the price of a D40 and has a built-in AF motor, I may consider upgrading my DSLR.
BlissX @ Jan 28th 2008 3:01PM
D90/D80X or bust.
Homer J @ Jan 28th 2008 3:25PM
Don't you mean broke an embargo?
Corwin @ Jan 28th 2008 4:09PM
Tell me, how precisely does one "pore" over details?

To "Fudge Lips" and the author:
On two hours of sleep and no coffee, I stand corrected. Thank you for pointng out my ignorance and I appologize.
In the future, I should tear myself away to verify my own faulty spellings, eh?
brooklyn b @ Jan 28th 2008 7:03PM
yes, i wondered about the poring as well.
the only 2 things i'd change about the D80? sensor cleaning & lose all the preset modes. gotta go up for that, not down. VIVA D90!
Ethyriel @ Jan 28th 2008 9:14PM
Also a fully sealed chassis would be nice, and I'd like sensor based image stabilization which can be turned off in favor of lens based stabilization. Oh, and a moderate resolution bump to 12MP would be nice if they could do so while maintaining an improvement in noise levels.
But this is a replacement for the D40/D40X, I'm still waiting for a D90 before I pull the trigger on a K20D.
bebop @ Jan 28th 2008 8:51PM
This is just a D40x + sensor cleaning, and some minor tweaks. They might as well have called it the D40y. It'll be a nice little camera, but no quantum leap this time around.
Don Giovanni @ Jan 30th 2008 7:13AM
Looks like any other camera on the market in terms of specs..
Supremess @ Feb 25th 2008 12:45PM
I am trying to choose a camera and
I am thinking of D40 or D40x or D60
what do you guys suggest?
