Ozone is used in hospitals to disinfect bacteria, mold, etc. (airborne or otherwise) in operating rooms, so their claims to "clean the air" are true (if it produces any levels of ozone) - since it decays quickly into diatomic oxygen in a contained environment and thus cannot be stored, the hospitals have an ozone generator on hand for decontaminating. Hospitals are not the only places that use it, the food industry, bio/chem labs... lots of places cause ozone is VERY good at disinfecting and decontaminating... so that white cloud of crap you see in the movies when people go into a decontamination chamber... yeah, that's usually ozone. However, inhaled, in large amounts - it's deadly.
Ozone itself is not a free radical, it reacts with some free radicals and can also react to form free radicals. Ozone also reacts with UV light... *GASP*!!! that's sunlight!!!! forming OH that helps remove hydrocarbon (anything ending in -ane, -ene, yne) from the air - but! in doing so, produces peroxyacyl nitrates, potential eye & lung irritant
Conclusion - if you want to use these things, make sure you set up a timer, run it afterdark - and don't stick around while it is in use or for the next 2 hours thereafter.
