Ecobutton aims to reduce PC power consumption, not as much as power button
While it won't reduce your carbon footprint as much as something like, say, the HumanCar, the folks behind the Ecobutton seem to think their new device will do its small part nonetheless, even if it's actual necessity may be somewhat in question. Apparently, the device will let you switch your PC to "ecomode" at the press of a button, although exactly what that is and how it differs from your usual sleep or hibernation mode is a bit of a mystery. The button seemingly does something to your PC, however, as the FAQ warns that some older computers and certain HP PCs may have trouble reactivating due to BIOS issues. No word as to when they'll be available directly to consumer just yet, but those looking to turn 'em into a business opportunity can order some now from "recognized promotional gift distributors" for between $12 and $18 apiece depending on the quantity.

Worthless. They're just jumping on the "global warming" bandwagon and trying to milk it for all it's worth.
jumping on the green bandwagon
Windows XP and Mac OS are different in the way they use their memory. Windows stores large amounts of data in RAM. Mac OS is based on Unix, which typically uses less RAM space (as an operating system).
Great, that's just what I need, another USB device. I was worrying I wouldn't be able to fill all of my USB ports.
If I wanted to save the eviroment that bad I would revert to paper and pencil........wait I forgot those are made out of trees to. So I can cut the trees down for paper or power. Maybe I will compensate by geting a toyota Prius or some other hybrid or electric car. But that would require me to work more for the money and that would require my boss to use more power to run the place where I work and ...........I guess that I can't win ?_? Maybe I will just use the things that where put here on the earth for me to use. I do not thing that a green ecobutton was created next to the tree.
Does this have Bluetooth?
You know... I have to wonder whether or not this button can be programmed for a different use. I mean, if you're company's giving them to you for a promotion (I think that's what they meant), why not make it more useful? At least then you won't feel bad about wasting some plastic.
But like Andrew up there said... there's definitely a human fund that it's going towards.
No, but it does run Doom.
You know now that I think about it I wonder if this is government funded. It would be the perfect thing: Mean, Green and ......quite Useless ^_^. And in responce to this I have just one thing to say:"Will it Blend?"
Whatever happened to a pedal-initiated command (see human-button)
Actually, I think this has a higher and better purpose. I think the head of the Strategic Air Commmand is already hacking it into an ICBM launch button. Perfect symbolism, no? Slap the big picture of the globe, and the globe goes up in smoke.
this is like the jesus figurines and jesus wears, all for greed. these people aren't doing it to help the environment, they're taking adv. of the cause
From the FAQs:
"Q: What systems does it run on?
A: Windows 2000 / XP / Vista 32 bit"
Until they get it working for Linux, screw that.
Typo: "it's actual necessity" --> "its actual necessity"
I just use the "Local Cooling" program. It tells you how many trees, oil, and watts you save and even gives you your rank as compared to other individuals...basically it's a simple program that puts your computer into sleep, screen saver, or hibernation mode after a certain amount of time...check it out.
