Toshiba's Super Bowl 2008 ad: the final act of desperation?

Curious to know what about $3 million bought Toshiba on Super Bowl Sunday? If so, the recycled commercial is after the break. So, what do you do when the game's over, Toshiba?

| Yes! Why, something the matter with HD DVD? | |
|---|---|
| Yeah, they need as much ammo as they can get right now. | |
| Maybe, it's not like they're broke -- yet. | |
| No, it would have been smarter to just give away 20,000 players for free. | |
| Hell no, it's all over, what's the difference anymore? | |
| VHS for life, suckers. |

OH MY GOD I HAVE SEEN THE ERROR OF MY WAYS. WHEN I GET HOME I MUST BURN MY EVIL PS3 TO EXORCISE THE DEMON THAT LIVES IN THE BLUE LASER. THAT COMMERCIAL GAVE ME A REASON TO LIVE. I MUST GO SIT IN FRONT OF BEST BUY UNTIL THEY OPEN AND IMMEDIATELY BUY ONE OF THOSE FANTASTIC DEVICES AT ITS NEW CLEARANCE-- I MEAN, LOWER PRICE.
Pfft. The truth about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is that neither of them matter. Most customers can't really tell the difference between an HD disc (either one) and a DVD on a good upconverting player. Keep your wallets closed, guys.
I watched the Super Bowl in HD, and noticed that while other commercials aired in HD, this spot for HD-DVD aired in Standard Definition (Boston). I just felt that ws kind of funny given the product they are trying to sell.
Was this ad just being aired in select local markets?
I have yet to see the ad but I found out from my cousin yesterday that certain local stores here in Bay Area, Pittsburg or Concord Circuit City pulled all of their HD-DVDs to return to vendor yet they're still selling the players. Weird...
hey it's the power of 2! 02/04/08
This is just pathetic... Blu-Ray is the clear winner.
This commercial actually aired during the preshows before it aired during halftime.
For the cost of a Super Bowl commercial, they seriously should have given away some players.
Anyone who's registered a Toshiba DVD player, or computer, or something.
Hi def will be obselete technology by the time this format war is resolved. Its a pointless war...
Wasnt 3DO meant to be a unifying format? lol...
Man, this is sad to see some people hold on to delusions. HD-DVD fans, we lost (I was in camp Red). The incomplete spec with extra DRM and region encoding championed by a company with many failed proprietary formats and MAFIAA ties won. But hey, at least the war is over. I've been looking for an excuse to get a PS3 before GTA4 comes out. Wooo hoo :)
the batman movies will be on blu-ray in the 3rd quarter of this year per Warner's 2008 HD Movie release list. (all of em')--think harry potter. also, my ps3 upscales. all those hd-dvd's are released as dvd's and that's good enough for now.
of course, some people might want to buy an hd-dvd player to upscale dvd's too. and that's a pretty good price. but, honestly, if you really want hd-dvd to die. stop supporting it. here's the best way. stop buying paramount and universal movies. after a couple of months of "zero" sales. i think that will do it. so, put your money where your mouth is. and don't feed the beast. no toshiba products. ouch!
maybe that will send a message. (even though i think the message was sent out a loooooooong time ago).
nice list shawnmos!
i got all that on blu-ray
