HP Pavilion tx2000 tablet goes on sale
It's a little late, but it looks like the HP is finally ready to take your money and hand over a tx2000 tablet. Nothing really new to report specs- or price-wise: $1,299 buys you a 2.1GHz AMD Turion, 2GB of RAM, GeForce Go 6150, 160GB disk, LightScribe dual-layer burner and a fingerprint reader, while $2,311 bumps you up to a 2.2GHz Turion, 250GB disk, Verizon 3G ExpressCard, and Vista Ultimate. And, of course, that 12.1-inch touchscreen that "has a digitizer!" Not a bad deal, actually -- anyone going to take the plunge?

Not until there is a decent touch interface instead of having to use a pen most of the time.
Its got nothing on the Latitude XT...
Actually, it has both touch and active digitizer, like the XT. It's also more than half the price, has a DVD burner, better multimedia capabilities, yada, yada, yada.
The XT may have a multitouch sensor, but there's no software for it that uses it to its potential so it is, in a word, useless.
Of course, the horrendous Turion processor will drive the folks away in droves and keep the battery life around 3 hours (standard battery).
Except a price tag thats half the size.
(1300 vs. 2500)
You fail to realise quite how terrible the screen is on this thing. Sure you can touch it, but you have to press so hard, and the responsiveness is just aweful. I admit the price is steep on the XT, but value for money wise, the XT has it in the bag.
I'd consider it if I didn't just buy the Eee for taking notes with. That's the only thing I'd use a tablet for.
Yeah, I'm thinking of getting an eeePC for taking notes (and browsing the internets) in class, and I'm almost ready to buy one right now except for the fact that the bezel is ridiculously huge, and I kind of want to wait for the next version. So I've decided to wait until May, and then I'll buy it for my birthday. There's also a touchscreen mod for the eeePC, and Compiz works on it (quite smoothly too, at least from the youtube vids) and I think it would be amazing to be able to have it rotate the cube with a finger swipe across the touchscreen, if that were possible. The mod is pretty cost effective too, I saw a figure of about $60 which isn't that bad, although of course you have to be able to do it which at this time I am not, but hope to be eventually. The only drawback to the eeePC touchscreen mod is that you still don't get the swiveling screen so it might be hard to actually write on it, but I'm sure someone will work out a mod for that too.
I don't quite understand how notebooks or tablet PCs are effective for note taking... I'm a mechanical engineering student and you couldn't pay me to give up my pen and paper.
I'm an electrical engineering student, and you couldn't pay me to give up my thinkpad tablet.
It's basically an infinite amount of notebooks, paper, and multicolored inks and highlighters combined into one machine. Plus, the handwriting in this "paper" is searchable.
Yeah boy, I'm a computer engineering student and I could never see myself going back to pen and paper ever again. I was horribly disorganized with my many sheets of loose leaf paper, and slide handouts and various notebooks. But with my Asus R1F, I am suddenly extremely organized. Kudos to Microsoft for OneNote and the pen integration of Powerpoint for taking notes right on the professor's slides. I'm far from a fanboy but they did something really useful this time.
I recommend tablets to anyone in a college degree that actually requires them to take notes. And even if you are bored to tears by a class and really dont need to take notes (see US History), you can browse the interwebs and write comments (like this one) while the prof is none the wiser.
this has been on sale already for several weeks, you are a little late
If it came with a core 2 duo I'd be sold. This is a perfict fit for that macbook air cpu.
The Turions give up nothing to mobile Core 2
@Spyvie - the benchmarks for the TX2000 come in considerably lower than similarly clocked C2D machines.
right, the and those cough up more for that performance too...
tx series is a low cost alternative to those full fledged tablet PCs..
I use the tx1000, loved it, as a cheap ultra portable... not as a tablet PC.. btw, I tried to trade up my tx1000 for a tx2000... they offer me $250... I'm like, sure... like how about no... then they said that offer will only valid for one week... so I asked if that means the following week I'm going to get a higher offer... I never got a reply...
What's with the crappy CPUs HP? I want some Core 2 Duo action NOW! And I'll pay for it.
I got a tx1000z which I bought about 4 months ago... its good but heavy.
Two big improvments I'd like to see:
Screen doesn't pale out in natural light
You don't have to press the screen hard with the pen to register a click (this is fixed with the digitalizer though)
That is by far the worst computer I've ever had the displeasure of owning. I wasted $1200 and two weeks of my life trying to make it work. The turion is incredibly slow, the touch membrane makes the screen very grainy, it had many BSOD errors even after a full reformat it had something to do with the display drivers/software. You have to practically push the pen through the screen to make anything show up, and even after that it's pretty inaccurate. It also has terrible battery life with the 8-cell unit. Definitely don't buy, get something like a lenovo. I took the plunge and got a MacBook for a little bit more and haven't looked back. (was never a Mac person before)
Uhhh... the 2000 is a completely different machine. The 1000 was a serious disappointment, the 2000 actually looks kind of cool.
I got a tx1000 and love it. If you calibrate the screen it is fairly accurate. It also needs broken in... After a while of use it is amazing.
I have a few complaints, but for $1200, I can't complain one bit. It's light, small, and quick. Sure it may not be able to run really graphic-intense programs at lightning speed, but as a super-portable laptop for basic uses like internet, office, etc.. it is awesome.
Oh, but the speakers on the tx1000 series suck bad. That's my biggest complaint.
I'm with Matthew on this one. I had a tx1000 which is basically the same as this and it was freaking slow and really bad battery life. The touch screen was disappointing so I hope some of this is fixed in this model.
I'm with Matthew and Dan on this one.
Absolutely awful laptop. To call the screen 'disappointing' would be several steps up from what it actually was. The correct term would be 'intolerable'
I have a HP TX1220US, once I installed XP on it, I got great battery life, quick startup times, and found a calibration utility to heighten the sensitivity to the point where my finger would work.
I'd still rather have an active digitizer though. The graininess of the screen probably won't be there on a REAL tablet.
It was a bitch to get the drivers though. I'm not buying any more HP products because of it.
No thanks... had the tx1000z for 2 weeks, first time i inserted the SD card, the locking mechanism broke, so the card wont' stay in. the other times i purchased a HP computer... their HD made weird noises another was motherboard failure and another time was that they sent me the wrong CPU...

Too Big!
I got this: http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=U810
I'm definitely looking into buying this. I read about the TX1000 being pretty poor in the touchscreen department, but with the Active Digitizer, it's exactly what I'm looking for. I only have a 1.8GHz AMD Turion and 1GB of RAM with Vista, and my machine runs smoothly. I can run hardware demanding programs fine and I have never had a problem with speed.
This looks like an excellent computer to fit my needs as a student, computer programmer, photographer, and as an everyday person.
Well, if that's the case then it should be a little better, since that's one of the tx1000z's biggest faults. So it's WACOM now. I still think it needs something other than the crappy turion.
I agree, but I see no problem with the Turion personally. The only downside I get from mine is that it gets pretty hot.
All the comments about the TX1000 series touch screen are irrelevant, and the note that it has nothing new specs wise is also invalid. The TX2000 is no longer a passive system, but now uses the WACOM active digitzer, putting it on the level of all other tablets sans the Dell system.
Huh?! Care to translate that into English? (Do you work for HP?)
Sure. The former HP model uses a passive digitizer, aka a touchscreen. This works based solely on pressure on the screen. The tx2000 uses an active digitizer, made by WACOM - which is basically the standard in tablet PCs. An active digitizer and pen control then mouse through electromagnetic signals between the pen and the digitzer located just behind the screen.
The active digitizer is more accurate, easier to use, and has pressure sensitivity, which the passive system doesn't.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablet_PC#Types_of_digitizers
Actually the 2000 has both active and passive. The passive digitizer shuts off when the pen comes into close proximity of the screen, thus preventing your hand from activating the touch function. Pretty clever.
I'd never buy a HP product! I had various problems with their customer service and shoddy products. They create more problems for us IT people.
I almost bought the tx1305 at Fry's the other day for $799 (after rebate) but then I came home and saw a positive review on the tx2000z at notebookreview.com and think I'll go with it instead. But to be honest, for the half hour I spent playing with the 1305, I thought it was pretty cool. The speakers were excellent, the screen clarity was great and it was packed with features. I need something small I can open up on a plane and that doesn't weigh a ton. The "tablet" feature was gravy. If you want a real tablet PC, drop another grand on a Fujitsu, etc. I'm the target market for the tx2000z and looks just about right for me.

Not unless it wipes my a$$,
anyone things it is ugly?
I didn't know these were new. I just ordered one for $1400 - $500 coupon (slickdeals.net). I am excited for the touchscreen/digitizer. We should have it in another week or so. I can let you know how it works. I thought it was a screaming deal at $950 w/tax and s/h. The CPU is a little weak, but for what the machine is intended, it should be OK. No Crysis! We optioned the webcam and thumbprint scanner for the ultimate in barely useful!
I also read notebookreview.com and Cnet's review. Both were basically positive.
If it sucks, we have a week or two to send it back!!
I've been reading the reviews of TX2000 ever since it was announced. As far as I know, it shows many improvements over the TX1000. Mainly the active digitizer, which makes the pointer device much accurate, thus making the TX2000 a true tablet PC rather than an Entertainment PC like the TX1000. Many users also report that the battery life of TX2000 was greatly improved over the TX1000. I personally think that it's a great value consider it's one of the cheapest true tablet PC out there with pretty good price/performance ratio compares to other tablet PC.
I can't wait to see this thing in action
Oh man. I bought a Tx1305Us from onsale.com After rebates it was 799, but with that 500 coupon I could get a tx2000 with a faster processor, more memory, and a bigger battery for only one hundred dollars more.... How easily can I return this thing :(
you must be stupid to select the higher configuration!!!
1st one with upgraded cpu (2.4ghz!!!) 4gb ram, 250ghdd, windows ultimate, and a wireless N card!!! for 1979!!!
God you are a pathetic waste of human life. We can only hope you die in a fire soon and put you out of our collective misery.
Can anyone confirm that the lower spec'ed model actually has the ACTIVE WACOM digitizer? Because, on the tx1000 series, some models had the tablet ability, some didn't.
Huh? I completely have no idea what this post is about...
The two vague quotes on your rubbish webpage, by Yahoo and CNN, are fake, and a Google search reveals how deep the garbage goes.

Why thank you for all the diverse options, but none of those fits my bill.
...Canonical. /there/ you go.
Honestly, do you think machines without Windows would sell like hotcakes? HP is a business.
I'm getting one. It's just what I need and I'm an artist. The last two HP products I have purchased have been awesome and lasted well. I'm sure it's much more powerful than the monster HP Pavilion I purchased two and a half years ago.
For the gadget centric mind who doesn't read reviews. I hearby tell you...that this little stupid not-so sexy machine gets extremely HAWT .......either cuz of the stupid not-so industry grade nVidia card or the processor just sucks...and besides as some1 else already pointed out...alot of issues arise with HP machines..for instance, the BIOS software just sucks..i mean if you have an HP machine, pls. go into the BIOS and check to see how many options u have..not even USB HDD support....and even with the newer version of this machine here, you don't have the option to encrypt your entire HDD or boot process with your fingerprint....... simply say the MACHINE is a disaster..
My friend just returned this 1 for d newer version and still the new 1 gets hawt but not as much as d old one.. save you money and buy quality...i'd GO FOR a nice Sexy LENOVO X61 12inch and get my money's worth for quality, reliability, advance features, and durability
this could be the future, touchscreen with active digitizer, an alteratievs to Dell's hyper expensive tablet...
I actually read this article on my tx2000. Had it for about a week now and loving it so far. The digitizer is great and even the touch works better than the tx1000.
