Lenovo's tiny new laptop adapter brick plays nice with others
Lenovo seems to think this whole "brick" terminology for laptop power adapters is some sort of slight on the good name of AC/DC adaptation, and is releasing a slim new combo adapter to fight that negative stereotype perpetrated by a biased media. The new $119 90W brick measures a half-inch thick and is about the size of a deck of playing cards. It can power your ThinkPad, IdeaPad or Lenovo 3000, but is also built to charge most phones and PDAs, and some music players if you buy the optional connector tips. The adapter can charge two devices at once, is 25 percent lighter than Lenovo's previous model, and is bricking up Lenovo's online store as we speak.

What's up with the image link?
Good stuff =D
These companies should start to standardize batteries instead. I have a large drawer full of adaptors and chargers that I don't even know what some of them are for.
It would be so nice if there was a standard for power bricks. The standard could scale - different size plugs and voltages for different power profiles, but you'd still only need a handful to cover all devices and sizes.
Nice but, 90$ is a little steep.
Well it's too bad you feel that way, as it's actually $119.
Doesn't Kensington already make one of these?
The interchangeable tips design makes me wonder if it's a rebadged iGo...
I think iGo makes this for lenovo. The tip looks like an iGo.
iGo has a lot more specific tips than this, but what intrigued me was the L9 tip which is a generic USB tip, so that you can plug in USB style power cables. That is pretty smart, kill several devices with one stone. iGo doesn't have that one yet.
How do you determine if it is safe for your devices? I'd love to have something that compact for my HP but wouldn't want to blow it up.
You just cost me $119
Estimated ship date is 3/4/2008 tho :(
Strange - I have had one for a week in the UK and got it next day.
it's iGo-ish, but I don't see a 90watt adapter on their page. This looks a lot slimmer than anything iGo has. The iGo I got a year ago is very literally a BRICK. Price is actually pretty reasonable... Very in-line with competitive offerings (iGo, Targus). I will definitely get one for my X60s.
I always wondered about PC power bricks considering the Apple notebook power adapters have always been quite small, and they don't get that hot either.
How about we consumers start DEMANDING they ALL go to something that is common to ALL devices. Such as EVERYONE using the mini-USB or something common.
I believe I read that people were so upset with the Phone cos in China and Korea that those two countries just TOLD all phoneco in China and So. Korea to decide on a COMMON CHARGER and DATA CABLE. So maybe at least our phones will start to change. One charger for all the phones since most are made over there.....yeah.
And i have been bending the ears of my congressfolks on taking a look at this on all kinds of things. Such as Tools at Lowe's, Phones, PDA, ALL BATTERY operated devices. And taking a severe attitude on PROPRIETARY SHAPE and SIZES of batteries.
Stop it.... if any manufacturers are reading this....or we are coming for you.

Open Standards FTW!
Sure, I'll use a brick instead of a USB to charge my phone...
USB requires your PC to be ON to charge from. It's also a trickle charge. Charging from universal power supplies usually charges faster and doesn't require a booted laptop. Trust me... a world of convenience better.
I agree with an above poster who said that they should just standardize AC/DC adapters already, so that you do not need a plethora of different units clogging up your home storage space.
They make a beautiful compact adapter... then pair it with 14 ft. of long, stiff D/C cable with a big honkin' ferrite on it, a separate A/C cord, a velco cable tie that flops around when the thing is in use, and no cable management for the A/C cord. Good job guys.
Apple's brick isn't a thin, but their A/C cable management rocks. If you ignore the fact that their strain relief is too small and it causes lots of cord failures. But they have the right idea.

Thanks, but I'll pass on Apple cables with ineffective, but very pretty stress relief. I've had iPod remotes and iPod headphones, so I know how long a cable with stylish, but useless stress relief can last.
If you simply leave 1/2" of slack before wrapping, and don't position the cable clip too close to the magsafe connector, you should never have a problem.
I'll pass on adapters with more bulk in cables than adapter. Actually, I won't. There are two thinkpads (and two MBPs) in my family and about 10 adapters between them.

It would be nice if they were all cross compatible. Has anyone used a chargepod? If so would you recommend purchasing one? I am looking at one online, costs $49.99 - http://www.blackberrysource.com/store/catalog.asp?item=1111 If it works I think it would be awesome. The price is fair, I just would like it if anyone has used one if they can tell me how it worked.
Thanks!

Verizon is about the only place you can get the authentic RIM product and matching door. Most other sites are out of stock and even when they are in stock they have the black battery door which looks like crap. http://www.batteryfast.co.uk/laptop-ac-adapter/
I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.com/laptop-ac-adaper/
