If they can do a 32GB Touch, why not do the same for the iPhone? Obviously it would be a little more expensive but... I think my tipping point for an iPhone jump would be 64GB. When should that come - 2009?
The reason is that if you look at an iPod Touch teardown, there is enough real estate on the circuit board for two NAND chips. Since the iPhone has to incorporate a cellphone and associated chips, there's only enough room for one NAND chip.
The iPod Touch will always have the potential of twice the NAND storage of the iPhone, given present packaging schemes.
Everyone that's saying "there's no room" is ignoring the fact that the iPhone & iPod Touch are *designed* devices, they didn't just descend from heaven as they are and Apple is limited to swapping out parts.
A conscious decision was made to give the iPod Touch more storage - and the design of the devices was made accordingly. At this point, it would require a redesign to give the iPhone as much storage, but just like the 3G vs. battery life issue, it's not as straightforward as people want to make it out to be.

See a comment above... the new chip being used is 16 GB. The iPhone has room for one, and the iPod Touch has room for two.
It seems the 32gb touch uses two of the same 16gb chips now in the iPhone... but there is no space for two chips because of the extra components.
A single 32gb chip would be far to expensive for now, but give it time :)
look here http://thinksecret.com/archives/iphonetakeapart/source/iphone35.html iPhone can only take 1 nand chip of 16gb where as iPod touch have more space to take 2x 16gb nand chip
Yeah, I read that after I posted. Oops. But, I got a lesson in circuit boards and iPhone construction this morning. Awesome...
