3G + N95 + JoikuSpot + WiFi + iPhone = 3G iPhone (the hard way)
In the unlikeliest of unions since Julia and Lyle, we bring you some hot iPhone on N95 symbiotic action. Using the free JoikuSpot application released this morning, you can now turn any S60 smartphone into a WiFi hotspot. Yes, just like WMWifiRouter does for WinMo devices. Sure, the solution doesn't make much sense from locations with tethered Internet and you can't encrypt the http and https (only) traffic. But if you've ever been in a WiFi dead spot and needed to share access (think PSP gaming), this type of solution is pretty unbeatable. Assuming you have an unlimited data plan that is. this version has no security, anyone could use your phone as a hotspot!
Hung @ Feb 6th 2008 8:22PM
Yes, because security is the most significant flaw with this plan.
I'll go back to my burning pile of $1,000. It gets better battery life, too.
Joe @ Feb 6th 2008 7:21AM
Leave it to Engadget to crowbar the iPhone into just about everything.
Inside man @ Feb 6th 2008 7:25AM
Did i not tell engadget about this yesterday afternoon?
Thanks for ignoring the mail.
L @ Feb 6th 2008 7:37AM
Just wanted to say the same...
Article without ANY reference to the iPhone + Engadget = Article with main focus on the iPhone, little else.
Thomas Ricker, was that really necessary?
David Vogt @ Feb 6th 2008 7:28AM
There should be a way to downvote posts, just like the comments.
Chrisphillers @ Feb 6th 2008 6:10PM
Engadget.. Why the hell would you need an iphone if you have an N95 8Gb!? Granted an N95 8Gb and ipod touch would be a great combination and far far cheaper.
gpig @ Feb 6th 2008 7:57AM
Thankfully i have both (well not the 8gb) just the normal n95 and this has just saved my life for my 3 (combined) hour commute, this is near perfect, and it works too.
I now have unlimited 3g mobile web browsing with safari via t-mobile (which rocks in the UK), a 5mb camera, my ipod, full GPS oh and a phone. Which with bit of gaffa tape I could make it into one device.
I dont care if its open for me its worth it
Esat @ Feb 6th 2008 7:50AM
And, my good sir, that's exactly what I have!! :)
amby @ Feb 6th 2008 8:44AM
Or N95 8GB and an N800/N810. That way you would have a full browser (incl. Flash support), qwerty keyboard and 3rd party apps. (iPod Touch is nicer, though)
Fernando @ Feb 6th 2008 7:40AM
meh, I don't how the heck the iphone showed up in this post, but:
iphone, who's your daddy?
xgwynn @ Feb 6th 2008 7:48AM
If you notice the video states '3G iPhone.... almost' as it's title. That's probably why he mentions the iPhone in the post.
Ryan Trevisol @ Feb 6th 2008 7:48AM
Yeah how about this is the easiest way to tether your N95 to your laptop?
jakem @ Feb 6th 2008 8:34AM
Bluetooth?
Ryan Trevisol @ Feb 6th 2008 8:36AM
Well I would think wifi would have faster connection speeds, wouldn't it?
batfastad @ Feb 6th 2008 11:30AM
In terms of speed, it won't make much difference whether you tether your phone to your laptop using WiFi or Bluetooth.
The speed of your 3G internet connection would likely be slower than both methods - that'll be the bottleneck.
Bluetooth should drain the phone and laptop batteries less though. Because as a radio technology I assume it draws less power than wifi, due to BT's far shorter transmission distance.
batfastad @ Feb 6th 2008 11:59AM
I use my Sony Ericsson P1i every day to connect to the internet on my 45 min train journey.
Connect using bluetooth to my ultra-portable laptop, and it works great.
I just leave my phone in my bag and connect to it.
Pietro @ Feb 6th 2008 8:20AM
3G + N95 + JoikuSpot + WiFi = 1 hour battery life
Rich @ Feb 6th 2008 8:15AM
I've been using this with my Nokia N95 8GB + iPod touch. It's a great combination that makes the iPhone totally defunct. :)
Chip @ Feb 6th 2008 8:22AM
1. If you have an N95, why do you need an iphone?
2. What does a WiFi hotspot on the N95 have to do with iphone again?
If you really insist upon putting iphone in the title maybe it should read:
"Make a WiFi hotspot on your N95. iphone still not 3G"
Josh* @ Feb 6th 2008 8:58PM
I think the original article referred to iPhone. It makes much more sense in conjunction with the iPod touch, to be honest. Which is how I'll be using this app.

tjn @ Feb 6th 2008 9:01AM
This is much more useful for an iPod Touch than for the iPhone...
If they make it secure then I really wont mind the Touch not having bluetooth nearly as much.
Until now the Touch hasn't been able to connect to the internet while on the move (in a car, bus, train whatever) which pretty much makes it useless as an internet tablet as far as I'm concerned.
Jah @ Feb 6th 2008 9:03AM
Apple's engineers don't know how to develop 3.5G for the iPhone :)
Andrew @ Feb 6th 2008 9:11AM
Wow, I did this goofing around with my boss's iPhone and my Sprint Mogul a while back. I most certainly didn't think it was newsworthy for Engadget. Still don't actually.
Josh* @ Feb 7th 2008 8:30PM
Then it's a good job you have nothing to do with anything.
Allen @ Feb 6th 2008 11:30AM
Wait I do not get it, whats wrong with using your laptop+3G access card to get service in wifi dead spots? I've been doing that... for years....
Frankenstein Black @ Feb 6th 2008 12:10PM
WOW! Overnight devices like this http://www.junxion.com/
Have been rendered useless! Not providing any advice here but I would sell those shares quickly, I'm just saying...
rento @ Feb 6th 2008 5:03PM
Guys you got it all wrong buy an iPod Classic and a standard N95. Don't mess with the best and just don't buy an iPhone.
Tim @ Feb 10th 2008 6:45PM
Is this going to result in a $85,000 cell bill like that canadian guy?

crzyjamaican46 @ Feb 6th 2008 7:45PM
the reason the iphone was mentioned was bc the iphone lacks 3g but has wifi so in areally really really lame way u could have a 3g iphone if you used both devices.
Josh* @ Feb 6th 2008 8:41PM
This sounds like exactly what I've wanted from my N95 w/unlimited data + iPod touch. Piggyback the phone's signal on the iPhone's better browser.
Josh* @ Feb 6th 2008 8:42PM
iPhone - iPod touch*
Rik @ Feb 7th 2008 4:23PM
I'm using it right now... this is SO cool!
Josh* @ Feb 6th 2008 8:55PM
Holy shit, wonder how this holds up for DS/Wii online..!
Josh* @ Feb 7th 2008 8:05PM
After testing it, let me just say this is HUGE! I couldn't care less about the iPhone anymore - I just can't wait for an iPod touch compatible bluEye to arrive and I'll be completely set!
Josh* @ Feb 7th 2008 8:07PM
Clearly I spoke too soon! http://www.gear4.com/product_detail.php?products_id=235
